GEORGE THOMAS GILSON, OF LEWISTON, IDAHO.
BABY-JUMPER.
Patented May 11, 1909.
Serial No. 462,998.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. GILsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lewiston, in the county of Nez Perce and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Baby-Jumper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a class of springsupported seats for infants, that are hung from an overhead support ant. are technically termed baby jumpers, and the purpose of the invention is to provide novel details of construction for a device of the character indicated, which are simple, durable and convenient, and that afford a safe, comfortable seat for a small child, whose natural motions will cause an elastic jumping move ment of the seat and its occupant.
The invention consists in the novel const-ructio-n and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective View of the improved baby jumper having a front portion thereof adjusted for permitting the seating of a child thereon; Fig. 2 is a partly sectional enlarged side view of the device; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, showing parts in closed adjustment by full lines and opened by dotted lines.
The body of the seat of the device, consists of two flat side pieces 5, 5, formed of wood, and preferably having parallel side edges, these similar members being connected at their lower ends by a transverse seat board 6, of suitable dimensions for effective service. At an equal proper distance above the seat board 6, the side pieces 5 are reduced in width forming two hanger arms 5 thereon, and producing two shoulders a, a, of an equal depth at opposite points where the arms join the side pieces. A curved back piece 7, is affixed at its ends upon the arms 5 where they join the side pieces 5, and said back piece is further supported by a curved brace 8, that is secured at its ends respectively upon the seat board 6 and back piece 7, at their centers. The brace 8 is curved forwardly and upwardly from the seat board 6, providing an arm or horn 8 which has less height than that of the brace 8.
; The portions of the brace 8 and arm 8* that are seated and secured on the seat board 6, are similarly rounded or rendered convex in cross section, as at 6, thus removing their corners, and the front and rear corners of the seat board 011 its upper side are similarly removed so as to avoid discomfort to the occupant of the seat. A curved guard bar 9 similar to the back piece 7, is provided for the forward support of a child seated in the improved chair or seat, and
p to adapt it for such a purpose one end of said guard bar is hinged upon a correspond ing frame piece 5, at a shoulder a thereon and is thus adapted for adjustment toward and from the opposite frame bar 5. Upon the free end of the guard bar 9, a ring eye (5 is secured, which will receive the nose of a hook (Z pivoted upon a respective hanger arm 5 when the guard bar is rocked toward said arm, and is seated thereon near one of the shoulders 64.
To adapt the device so far as described for its service as a baby jumper, a preferably spiral coiled spring 10 is secured by one end on the upper end of each hanger arm 5. At their opposite ends the springs 10 are cured upon the ends of a yoke bar 11, from the center of which a suspension rope 12 extends to a point of overhead support, which may be the ceiling of a veranda, or room, and have such a length including that of the springs 10, as to dispose the seat board (3 a proper distance above the floor, so that when a child is seated on the seat board and secured from release by its own efforts, the feet of the infant will slightly touch the floor. The natural activity of the occupant of the chair or seat will cause an expansion or contraction of the springs 10, and thus give a jumping motion to the seat and the baby it supports. Of course, it will be understood, that a soft cushion or the like may be placed on the seat board (3, and thus conduc'e to the infants comfort.
It will be noted that the relative position of the hook and eye (Z, (Z, will prevent them from being released the baby. Further more, the skeleton form given to the seat and attachments thereto affords free ventilation, that is essential for the health of a growing infant. The great convenience afforded for iii the seating of a child in the chair, and for its removal as may be desired, are advantageous features of the improvement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A baby jumper, comprising a pair of hanger arms, a seat board secured to and connecting the lower ends of the hanger arms, a curved back having its ends secured to the hanger arms a suitable distance above the seat, a curved guard bar hinged to one of the hanger bars and having a detachable connection with the other hanger bar, a curved and rearwardly extending brace secured to the seat and back, and a curved horn extending forwardly from the seat.
The combination with resilient suspending means, of a pair of hanger arms, a seat board that spaces the hanger arms apart parallel with each other, a curved brace extended rearward from the seat board at its transverse center, a curved back support mounted upon the brace and secured at its ends on the hanger arms, a horn projecting forwardly from the seat and a hinged curved guard bar at the front of the seat board.
The combination with resilient suspending means, a pair of hanger arms pendent from said means, side pieces at the lower ends of the hanger bars, and a trans verse seat board joined at its ends to the lower ends of the side pieces, of a curved brace extended rearward and upward from the seat board, a curved back support secured at its center on the upper end of the a curved guard bar hinged at one end on one of the side pieces, and means carried by one end of the guard bar, adapted for detachably securing said end upon a respective hanger arm.
a. The combination with a suspended rope or the like, a yoke bar on the lower end of said rope, springs pendent from the ends of the yoke bar, hanger arms pendent from the springs, side pieces on the lower ends of the hanger arms, and a seat board secured by its ends transversely on the lower ends of the side pieces, of a brace piece curved rearard and upward from the center of the eat board, a curved back support fixed at its center on the upper end of said brace piece and at its ends on the side pieces, a horn curved forward and upward from the seat board, a curved guard bar hinged at one end on one of the side pieces, a ring eye on the free end of the hinged guard bar, and a hook on the hanger. arm, that will engage the ring eye when the end of the guard bar is seated upon the side piece near a respective hanger arm.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE THOMAS GILSON.
