WHEEL TOY.
Application filed February 6, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY '1. Krnosnonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Wheel Toys, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys and has for its object to provide a wheel toy with a figure which is rocked back and forth as the toy is run along the ground.
A further object of my invention is to pro ide a wheel toy which. may be pushed and guided by a single rod.
These and other objects will in part be obvious, and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
My invention consists in the parts hereinafter shown described and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the toy. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the pushing rod.
The toy comprises a platform 1, which carries a bracket 2, having downwardly projecting arms 3, which are perforated at their lower ends to receive the axle 1 of the toy. Said axle 4 carries running wheels 5, 5, at its outer ends, which running wheels are rigidly secured to the axle so that said. axle 4 will rocats with said running wheels. The bracket 2 for supporting the platform 1 is also pro vided with a centrally located downwardly deflected portion 6, which forms a bearing for the guiding. shaft 7. Said guiding shaft 7, carries a pulley 8, at its lower end, and an eye 9 at its upper end. The platform 1 is also provided with a bracket 10 at the forward end thereof, which connects said platform with a central reach. 11. The reach 11 is pivoted at its forward end to a bracket 12 carrying the forward axle on which is loosely mounted the running wheels 13 13. Said reach is secured to the bracket 12 by a suitable pivot bolt 14, so that the front axle is free to move about said pivot bolt and thus guide the toy.
The guiding rods 15 and 16 are secured at the forward ends in suitable openings 17 and 18, respectively, in the bracket 12. T he rear ones of said guiding rods 15 and 16, are connected to a cord 19 which encircles the pulley 8 two or three times so as to prevent slipping thereon.
If desired, an elastic band or the like 21, may be inserted between one end of the cord 19 and the rod 16, so as to place a tension on said cord. A suitable pushing and steering rod 22, is provided with an open eye 23, at its lower end, which is adapted to engage the eye 9 in the guiding shaft 7. A clip 24, preferably made of sheet metal, is bent so as to provide passages or ways and 26, at right angles to each other. Said clip is inserted in the eye 9 with said eye extending through said passage 26. The eye 23 in the steering rod, is inserted in the eye 9 and in the passage of the clip 24. Said clip 24 allows the pushing and steering rod to have a universal movement relative to the guiding shaft 7, but limits the axial movement of said steering rod. relative to said guiding shaft so that all axial movement of said guiding rod will be transmitted to said shaft. It will thus be seen that the toy may be pushed and guided by the rod 22.
A. figure is preferably mounted u on the platform 1 of the toy, and consists 0' a body portion 27 pivoted to leg portions 28, which are secured to the platform and the reach 11. Arms 29 are pivoted to the body portion at 30, at one end, and at the other end to a lever 31 by a pivot pin 32. Said lever 31 is pivoted at to the reach 11. Said reach 11 is preferably provided with a centrally located opening 11, through which said lever 81 extends. A rod 33 loosely engages the lever 31 at 34:, and at its other end is provided with an eye 35 which engages a crank 36 formed in the axle 41.
It will be seen that as the vehicle is pushed about. and the axle rotated by the movement of the wheels 5, that the rotating motion of said axle through the rod 33 will oscillate the lever 31, which in turn will oscillate the body of the figure mounted on the platform of the toy.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A toy including in combination a platform, running wheels for supporting the rear of said platform, an axle for said running wheels, a crank arm formed in said axle a figure pivotally secured to said latform, a lever for oscillating said figure anc a rod connecting said lever to the crank arm guiding and supporting wheels at the front of said. platform and combined means for pushing said toy and turning said guiding wheels, said means extending helnnd. said vehicle.
2. A toy including in combination a plat form, a bracket secured to the rear end of said platform, an axle pivotally supported by said bracket and carrying running wheels thereon, a crank arm formed in said axle a bracket secured to the forward end of said platform, a reach secured to said hracket, running wheels pivoted to said reach, a figure pivotally supported lily said platform and reach, a lever pivoted to said reach for oscillating said figure and a rod connected to said lever and to said crank arm and means for turning the running wheels on the pivotal connection to the reach said means extending behind said vehicle.
3. A toy including in combination a platform, a bracket secured to said platform, an axle mounted in said li racket and carrying running Wheels, said hracket having a central downwardly deflected portion forming a hearing for a guiding shaft, a guiding shaft in said bracket and extending upward through said platform, guiding wheels, means connected to said shaft and to said guiding wheels for guiding said toy and a rod connected to said guiding shaft for pushing and steering said. toy.
4. A toy including 111 combination a platform, a bracket secured to said platform, 5
ing shaft to the guiding Wheels for guiding said toy, and a rod connected to said guiding shaft, wherehy said toy may he pushed and steered.
5. A toy including in combination, a platform, a hrackct secured to said platform, running wheels supported by said hracket, a reach seemed to said bracket at the forward end thereof, guiding wheels pivotally secured to said reach, a vertical guiding shaft extending through said platform at the rear end thereof, means for connecting said guiding shaft to the guiding wheels for guiding said toy, and a red connected to said guiding shaft whereby said toy may he pushed and steered, and a figure pivotally supported upon said platform and reach, a lever pivoted to said. reach and connected to said figure for oscillating the same, and a rod connected to said lever and to the axle of the rear running wheels, for oscillating said lever.
6. A toy including in comhination, a platform, a hracket secured to the rear end of said plz'ttforn'i, running wheels supported by said bracket, said l -racket having a central deflected portion for supporting a guiding shaft, a guiding shaft mounted in said hracket and extending through said platform, a reach connected to the forward end of said platform, an axle pivoted to said reach and carrying running wheels, rods connected to said axle, one at eachside of said reach, a pulley mounted on said guiding shaft and a cord connected to said rods and encircling said pulley, whereby the turning of said guiding shaft wi, guide said toy.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
