To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN S. ROWE, a citi' zen of the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Im rove ment in Lavatories, of which the fol owing IS a specification. j V

This invention relates to lavatories or washstands more particularly intended for use in apartment and rooming houses and other buildings which are not equipped with stationary plumbing. p

The primary object of the invention is to provide a lavatoryof this sort which has the appearance and affords the facilities of a sanitary stationary washstand of the kind in use at the resent time, that is, one which has a wash bowl and provision for supplying running water to and draining ofi the soiled water from the bowl, just as in the stationary washstand.

Other objects of the invention are to roduce a lavatory of this sort which wil be sanitary and desirable in use and of attractive ap earance but of inexpensive construction; a so to provide a portable waste water receptacle which, when in position beneath the wash bowl, forms in elfect a supporting pedestal for the bowl and gives the washstand the appearance of the pedestal washstand used in stationary lumbing, and to movably support the bowl so that it can be raised from its operative horizontal position to permit the waste receptacle to be removed for emptying and cleaning it; also to arrange the waste receptacle to extend up around the wash bowl above the bottom discharge or drain hole thereof so that the waste water will rise in the bowl before the waste receptacle becomes full, to give warning that the waste receptacle is nearly full and should be emptie a a I The lavatory comprises a wash bowl which is hinged or mounted so that it can be supported in a horizontal operative position and swung up or raised from this position, a water tank with a faucet for supplying water to the bowl, and a portable waste water receptacle which is arranged below the wash bowl and is shaped like and roduces the eflect of a supporting pedestal t erefor when the bowl is in the operative position. ' the construction shown and described in this application, the bowl and water tank are intended to be secured on a wall, the lavatory being in this sense a stationary device, but this stationary construction is not an essential, as a sup orting stand or structure could be provi ed so as to render the lavatoiiy portable.

n the accompanying drawings, consisting of two sheets: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lavatory embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation thereof, on an enlarged scale, showing by full and broken lines the operative and raised positions of the wash bowl.

A represents a wash bowl which may be made of any suitable material and may be of any desired sha e, but which is preferably made of the wliite porcelain or enameled ware commonly employed for stationary wash bowls, and has the usual deep skirt or depending marginal flange a, and bottom discharge or drain hole a adapted to be closed by a suitable plug or valve. The bowl is hinged to a board B by a horizontal pipe C attached at its ends to the bowl and passing through bearings 0 attached to the board, or

by any other suitable hinge connection, and

the board B is screwed or otherwise secured on a wall or other support so that the bowl can project horizontally out from the wall in position for use and can be swung u from the horizontal position as indicated y full and broken lines in Fig. 4.

D is a clean water tank supported above the 'wash bowl and provided with a pipe E leading therefrom and having a faucet e arranged to discharge into the bowl. The tank shown is rectangular in shape and relatively thin or shallow so as not to project far out from the wall, and it has an ornamental wooden casing provided in front with a mirror (1, the tank being supported at a convenient height for using the mirror.

The discharge pipe E is connected. at its lower end to the horizontal hinge pipe 0 for the wash bowl and serves to partially support the water tank. The tank can also be secured tothe wall to give it additional su port, or, if desired, the board C to which t e bowl is hinged can be made high enough to carry the tank. The tank can be constructed and supported in any suitable manner which will not detract from the attractiveness of the lavatory and any suitable pipe This receptacle is made in the form of a sup porting pedestal or column for the wash bowl and is preferably made of sheet metal so as to be light and durable, but is painted or enameled so that it has the appearance of being made of the same material as the bowl, and when the bowl is supported horizontally over the waste receptacle the effect of a stationary pedestal washstand is produced. The upper end of the waste receptacle is made flaring and of sufficient diameter to extend up around the wash bowl far enough. for the upper end thereof to be hidden from view by the skirt a of the bowl, so that the joint between the waste receptacle and. the bowl cannot be seen, which adds further to the appearance of the integrality of the bowl and waste receptacle. Furthermore, by thus extending the waste receptacle up around the bowl above the discharge or drain opening a in the bottom thereof, the waste water will rise in the bowl before it can overflow from the waste receptacle and thus serve as a warning that the waste receptacle is nearly full and should. be emptied.

When the bowl is in its horizontal or operative position it preferably, though not neces sarily, rests on and is supported by the waste receptacle, and the bowl is arranged so that its rear edge will strike the supporting board B and limit the downward movement of the bowl when the waste receptacle is removed, to prevent the bowl from swinging downwardly against the wall and injuring the wall or the bowl. The bowl can be prevented from swinging downwardly below a substantially horizontal position by any other suitable means.

The waste receptacle may, if desired, be provided with a handle to facilitate carrying and handling it, but the handle, which is shown at G, is preferably located near the top of the receptacle so that when the receptacle is in position beneath the bowl, with the handle to the rear, the handle'will be pr ctically hidden from View.

In the lavatory herein described, provision is made for supplying only cold water to the wash bowl, but the lavatory can be made more elaborate, having provision for supplying both hot and cold water, and other appurtenances, without departing from the principle of the invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination of a wash bowl movably mounted so that it can be supported in a substantially horizontal operative position and can be raised from such operative position, means for supplying water to said bowl, and a waste water receptacle beneath said bowl which is in the form of a supporting pedestal for the bowl and which can he removed when said bowl is raised from the operative position, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of a wash bowl, a support to which said bowl is hinged to swing to and from a substantially horizontal operative position, means for supplying water to said bowl, and a waste water receptacle beneath said bowl which is in the form of a supporting pedestal for the bowl and which can be removed when said bowl is swung up from the operative position, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of a wash bowl mow ably mounted so that it can be supported in a substantially horizontal o icrativc position and can be raised from such operative position, a tank and connections for supplying water to said bowl, and a portable waste water receptacle in the form of a pedestal which supports said bowl in the operative position and which can be removed when the. bowl is raised from the operative position, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of a wash bowl movably mounted so that it can be supported in a substantially horizontal operative position and can be raised from such operative position, means for supplying water to said bowl, and a waste water receptacle beneath said bowl which is in the form of a supporting pedestal for the bowl and which can be removed when said. bowl is raised from the operative position, the upper end of said waste water receptacle extending up around said bowl above the discharge hole in the bottom thereof, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of a wash bowl movably mounted so that it can be supported in a substantially horizontal operative position and can be raised. from such operative position, means for supplying water to said bowl, and a waste water receptacle beneath said bowl which is in the form of a supporting pedestal for the bowl and which can be removed when. said bowl is raised from the operative position, the upper end of said waste water receptacle extending u around said bowl above the discharge hole in the. bottom thereof, and said bowl having a depending skirt surrounding the upper end of said waste water receptacle, substantially Rs set forth.
