subject of the Emperor of Austria, .residing at Cleveland,h in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lm rovements in Invalid-Beds; and --I hereby full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the useful same may e lifted vertically or shifted hori# zontally .by-a corresponding moving or shifting of a portion of the bed, thereby doing' away with the necessity of having to handle the patient which is hard on the attendantsor nurses and frequently occasions suffering to the patient. 1

By the use of my invention it is possible to lift the patient above the bed bymeans'of a frame on which the patient lies 'and then to shift the frame sidewise onto anoperating table, if necessary, Without having to place the hands at all on the patient. The patient can also be lifted in the same way when it is desired to change the linen on the bed-or when -it is necessary to winsert bandages or dressings beneath or around the patient.`

25 represents a rectangular frame having alength and width slightly greater than the length and width of themattress. To the corners of this frame 25^are secured arms 26 and 26 `and 27 and.27 which are'secured in any suitable manner tothe upper. ends of the rack- bars 7 and 7 and 9 `and 9, respectively, and therefore when `the said rack-bars are raised the frame 25 will be lifted up thereby.' On the top of the frame 25 is arranged a` bars of their-ame 28 are mounted rollers29 i so as to travel on the end bars of the frame permitting the frame 28 to be readily shifted transversely of the said frame 25. At the end of the frame 28, near the head of the bed is hinged a small frame 32 for supporting the head and shoulders of the persons occupying the bed. The frame 32 is provided with projections 33 and 33/, A shaft 34 extends between the posts 1 and 1 anden said shaft are rigidly secured arms 35 and 35 which are arranged to engage with the projections 33 and 33. One end of the shaft 34 is provided with a crank arm 36 and a ratchet Wheel 37 and on the side of the post 1 is mounted a pawl 33 which is arranged to engage with the ratchet Wheel 37 .v lt will be seen that by turning the crank arm 36 the arms 35 and 35 Will be swung up tilting up the frame 32 and forming a support therefor at the desired angle, and the engagement of the paWl with the ratchet wheel will hold the arms in the proper position. Near the top of the head and foot pieces of the bed frame are arranged small shafts 40 and 41 on which are sprocket Wheels 42 and 43 respectively. The sprocket Wheels 42 are operatively connected with the sprocket wheels 14 and 14 i on the shaft 1.1 by sprocket chains 44 and the s rockets 43 are operatively connected with t e sprocket wheels 2() and 20 on the shaft 12 by sprocket chains 45. .lt will therefore be understood that when the crank arm 16 is operated the shafts 40 and 41 will be driven through their operative connection with the-shafts 11 and 12. On the shafts 40 and 41 are formed screw- threads 47 and 43 respectively, and on the screw-threaded portions of said shafts 40 and 4]. are arranged pairs of screw-threaded blocks 49 and 50, respectively, the pairs of blocks being preferably connected by bars 51 `and 52, respectively. On the pair of blocks 49 are rotatably mounted small sheaves 53 and on the pair of blocks are mounted small sheaves 54. Ropes 55 are arranged on the sheaves 53 and each rope is provided at one end with a hook 56 and at its other end with a counter-balancing Weight 57 and likewise ropes 59 are arranged on the sheaves 54 and are provided with hooks 60 and counter-balanc ing Weights 61. lt Will therefore be seen that when the shafts 40 and 41 are rotated the sheaves on said shafts will be caused to travel lengthwise on said shafts carrying' along with them the ropes which are mounted thereon. The mattress 10 is preferably leather covered and may be provided with a drainage channel 10.

The operation of the )arts heretofore de scribed are as follows. l'Vhen the bed is occupied the person therein will lie on top the frame 23. if it is desired to raise the occupant so as to change the linen on the bed or in order to get unrestricted access to the body of the patient as is necessary when bathing` the patient or applying bandages thc crank arm 16 will be operated thereby raising the rackbars which will carry up the frame 25 together with the frame 28 which rests thereon and the patient will be lifted clear of the mattress. lf it is desired to remove the patient entirely from the bed the hooks on the ends of the ropes are caused to engage with the openings 30 in the end bars of the frame 28 and the crank arm 16 is then operatedy which will as before stated, raise the rack bars thereby lifting up the frames 25 and 28, but as the frame 28 has been. coupledy to the ropes as the two frames move up together the frame 2S will be caused to travel transversely of the frame 25 so that the frame 28 will both move vertically and horizontally at the saine time so that when it has been raised the required distance the said frame 28 will proj ee t beyond the side of the bed a suflieient distance to permit it to be readily taken hold of by attendants and either carried away or shifted upon an operating table which may be shoved under the frame before it is entirely removed from the bed.

`What l claim is,-

l. ln an invalid bed, the combination with a main frame, of means for supporting a nx attress thereon, vertical guideways formed in said main frame, rack-bars slidably mounted in said guideways, a frame arranged above said mattress and operatively secured to said raclebars, gear wheels mounted in the main frame and arranged to mesh with the said rack-bars, means for simultaneously actuating said gear wheels, a frame provided with means for independently supporting the patient arranged on top of said last-mentioni-d frame and means for shifting said uppermost frame transversely of the frame on which it rests simultaneously with the upward movement thereof.
