Letters Patent No. 92,064, dated- Jwze 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LANGSTON, of Brooklyn, in the'county of Kings, and in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a cheap and eii'ective fasteningfor securing the upper and lower portions of alantern together,- as will hereafter be set forth and described.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the base of the-lantern.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the fastening.
Letter A represents the base of the lantern, upon the top of which there is placed a shoulder, the outer edge of which is turned upwards, so as to form a flange or bed, in which the rim B, to which the wire frame, for protecting the glass, is attached.
To the outer edge of the shoulder there is secured a small bent piece of metal, 0, which extends over the top of the rim, and holds it down,
Upon the opposite side, therc is attached a hinge, D, which is closed over the rim, .to hold it ddwn.
In order to prevent this from being raised, to the top of the rim there is secured a lug or book, E, which, by turning the rim, slides over the top of the hinge, and thus securely holds it down.
Having thus described my invention,
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- v In combination with the base A, rim B, and catch 0, the hinge D, and lug E, when all are arranged and combined to form a fastening for lan'terns, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 27th day of March, 1869.
Witnesses: THOMAS LAN GSTON WALTER NlonoLs, Tnos. G. Conwm.
