NELIA EVANS, OF HOMERVILLE, GEORGIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 7, 1908.
Patented May 4, 1909. Serial No. 466,366.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N ELIA Evans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homerville, in the county of Clinch and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Rocking-Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful attachment for rocking chairs and has for its object to provide an attachment whereby the chair may be rocked back and forth by the occupant.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocking chair with my improved attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a similar view with the horizontal portions of the bell crank levers swung into approximately vertical position.
In the embodiment illustrated, numeral 1 indicates a rocking chair of any ordinary or and 2 the rockers thereof. My 1m roved attachment comprises a pair of be 1 crank levers 3 pivoted to the inner faces and near the front ends of the rockers with their horizontal portions projecting forwardly in advance of the rocker, a series of horizontally extending spaced slats 4 being disposed or arranged between the forwardly extending portion of the rockers to form a platform for the feet of the operator. A pair of operating levers 5 provided with upwardly curved rear end portions 6 are pivoted, as at 7, to the faces of the rockers 2 of the chair a suitable distance in rear of the bell crank levers 3. Longitudinal operating links 8 are arranged between the vertical arms 9 of the bell crank levers and the upwardly curved portions of the operat ing levers, the purpose of which will be evident. The rear ends of the operating links are slotted longitudinally, as at 10, to permit the horizontal portions of the bell crank levers to swing upwardly in an approximately vertical position or until the platform abuts against the lower cross piece 11 between the front legs 12 of therocker, when it is desirable to cause the rocker to occupy as small a space as possible, as in transportation or when stored. The lower ends of the I operating levers 5 are provided with rollers 13 to travel over the floor or other surface I upon whlch the rocker is placed and reduce friction which would otherwise be created. I to a considerable extent, to a minimum. In the operation of the device, the chair is j operated or rocked back and forth by the operator pressing down with his feet upon I the platform, which operation through the medium of the bell crank levers 3, operating levers 8 and connecting links 5 causes an upward pull to be exerted upon the rockers at the pivotal points of the operating levers whereby the rockers are tilted rearwardly. The rollers 13 travel upon the floor and reduce friction to a minimum.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
arious changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin I ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended I claims. I Having thus described and ascertained the l nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A rocking attachment for chairs com prising a pair of bell crank levers pivoted to the front ends of the rockers of the chair, a platform supported upon said levers for the feet of the operator, a pair of operating levers provided with upwardly extending rear end portions pivoted to the rockers in rear of the bell crank levers, and operating links between the upwardly extcnding portions of I the operating levers and the bell crank levers. I 2. An attachment for rocking chairs comprising a pair of bell crank levers pivoted to I the inner faces and front ends of the rockers of the chair with their horizontal portions i projecting forwardly in advance of the same, a platform for the feet of the operator mounted upon said portions of said levers, a pair of operating levers or links provided f with upwardly curved rear end portions pivoted near their rear ends to the inner faces the bell crank levers may be swung into an of the rockers in rear of the bell crank levers, approximately vertical position.
