To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JENNINGS Soo'r'r Mo- COMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dobbs Ferry, in the county of iVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips or Tics,- of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of the same.

This invention relates to clips or ties to hold and lock the leaves of a loose leaf binder to the post or pillar of such binder, or to hold a sheet or a plurality of sheets together, or to assist in securing a sheet or sheets to any suitable "filing device.

In the accompanying drawing showing illustrative embodiments of this invention and in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which one form of my clip or tie is made. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a sheet of paper, 01' a loose leaf binder sheet, and a plan view of one form of my clip or tie in operative position. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of blank. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the clip or tie formed from the blank shown in Fig. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section on the line 55 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows. 6 is a plan view of another modified form of blank. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary plan view of a clip or tie made from the blank illustrated in Fig. 6.

In the illustrative embodiments of this invention shown in the drawing 1 (Fig. 1) is a blank which may be stamped or cut from any suitable material, preferably thin metal. The central or body portion 2 has mounted at either end split rings 3 and 4 from which extend longitudinal fins 5 and 6 respectively. Upon the fin 6 I provide a lateral wing 7, a similar wing 8 being mounted upon the fin 5, and, in this form, upon the same side of the longitudinal-axis of the blank 1.

The fins 5 and 6 are each slotted preferably at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the blank, though they may be slotted parallel to the axis if desired, Fig. 6. These slots 9 and 10 form the fin 6 into arms 11 and 12 and the fin 5 into arms 13 and 14;. In the form of clip or tie shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the wing 7 is connected to the arm 11 and the wing 8 to the arm 13, the wings being preferably,

though not necessarily, formed integral with the fins.

A portion of the blank is threaded through the slot 16 in the sheet or sheets 17, the blank then, or previously if desired, being bent on the line 15 to bring one of the rings, for example ring 1, above and on the opposite side of the sheet or sheets 17 from the ring 5, Fig. 2. The wings are then bent across the arms to close the slots 9 and 10. This may be done in various ways but in this form of clip I preferably bend the wing 7 up and over the arms 11 and 12 and the wing 8 down and across the arms 13 and 14, Fig. 2.

To remove the sheets of paper 17 from the clip it is merely necessary to bend back the wings 7 and S and withdraw the clip from-the sheets.

W hen the clip or tie is used in connection with a loose leaf binder to lock the different sheets upon the filing posts or pillars of the binder, not shown, the loose leaf 17 is provided with a slot, such as 16, and with filing slots 18 and 19, the latter being for the reception of the pillar or post of the binder. In placing a leaf 17 in the binder equipped with my tie, clip or look, the usual pillar or post is forced through the slot 18 and into the slot 19, passing also either through the slots 9 and 10 in the tie or clip, if they are large enough to permit this, or if too small, the different arms 11, 12, 13 and 14 may be sprun outward; or the arms 11 and 12 connected to a ring, such for example as 4:, may be pressed in di'tl'erent directions, one up and one down, to permit the insertion of the ost into the apertures 21, 21 of the clip, wliich apertures register with the slot 19 in the loose leaf 17.

Accidental or surreptitious removal of the leaf 17 from the binder is prevented by the lips 20, 20 on the respective rings 3 and 4 engaging with the pillar or post when an unauthorized attempt is made to pull the leaf from the binder to, for instance, change an account or otherwise falsify the records in the binder.

To more securely hold or look the sheet in the binder I bend the wings 7 and 8 across the slots 9 and 10 respectively, for example, by bending the wing 7 up and over the arms 1 1 and 12 and the wing 8 down and under the arms 13 and 14, Figs. 2 and 2. These wings may be variously arranged with relation to the arms. In Figs. 3, 4 and 5 I have shown a blank with wings 22 and 23, arranged on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the clip, the wing 22 being connected to the arm 13 and the wing 23 to the arm 12. The wings are bent across the slots 9 and 10 in opposite directions, Figs. 4 and 5, and form a very eflicient lock.

In Figs. 6 and 7 I show a modification in which a portion of one of the arms is extended longitudinally and performs the function of a wing to close the slot in the clip or tie. In this form the body portion 24 is provided with two split rings 25 and 26 and each ring is provided with arms; those on ring 25 being numbered 27 and 28, and the two on the other ring 30 and 3]. One of each pair of arms is extended to form wings, 29 on arm 28 and 32 on arm 31. These wings are folded on their respective arms, Fig. 7, to permit them to cross and close the slots between the arms. The extreme ends of the wings 34 may be then, if desired, bent over their complementary arms as shown in Fig. 7

In some cases I may use fastening means on the clip or tie to assist in holding the papers. These may be of any form such as a struck u 3 tooth 35 cooperating with an aperture 36, Tigs. 1 and 6. My invention, however, is not to be limited to this or any other form of such fastening means.

Having thus described this invention in connection with the several illustrative embodiments thereof to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

1. A clip or tie having a body member, split rings connected to the body member,

arms connected to the split rings and wings connected to the arms.

2. A clip or tie having a body member, fins connected with the body member and having a slot and wings carried by the fins.

3. A clip or tie having a body member, split rings carried by the body member, arms extending out from the split rings and wings carried by the arms.

4. A clip or tie having a body member, split rings carried by the body member, arms extending out from the split rings, laterally extending wings carried by the arms, said wings being mounted on the opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the clip or tie.

5. The combination with a leaf of a loose leaf binder having the usual filing slots, of a clip or tie having a body member, split rings carried by the body member, arms extending out from the split rings and one or more laterally extending wings carried by one or more of the arms.

6. The combination with a leaf of a loose leaf binder having the usual filing slots, of a clip or tie having a body member, fins connected to the body member and having a slot, and wings carried by the fins.

7. The combination with a leaf of a loose leaf binder having the usual filing slots, of a clip or tie having a body member, split rings carried by the body member, arms extending out from the split rings, laterally extending wings carried by the arms, said wings being mounted on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the clip or tie.
