JAMES Letters Patent N 91,949, dated .Time 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATOR @RATE-BARS.
v The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES MAHONY, of Newport, in the county of Newport, in the State of Rhode Island, snperintending engineer of' the "Newport `line of Steamers between New York and Boston, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate- Bars for Furnaces for Steam-Boilers and analogous situations; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in the construction of all" the severalbars or parts of the compound grate-bar, herein described, in horizontal waves, or short curves or corrugations.
.This ,construction maintains .the arrangement of the.
'lhe accompanying drawings form a part of thisA ure is applied upon a narrower section, and the gratebar is reinforced' or strengthened by a deep under-rib. Deep under-ribs are not new. Neither is the widening or narrowingr of the sections, or the diagonal position of the cross-bars in the section. But the forming of. these several parts in short waves is new, so far as' I am aware, and [und by practice that it is preferable to anyother construction known to me.
Similar letters of. reference indicate corresponding parts'in tlieseveral figures y A A is the exterior,- or frame of each section, and B B are diagonal lcross-bars,` cast in one with the surrounding frame A, and joined thereto `at each end. C O are projections extending outward, fto hold the sections at proper distances apart, to allow air to rise between them; and v t A D D are bearers extending across underneath, and resting on the shelfin the side of the furnace.
In the form shown' in rigs. 3 and 4, a deeper central web or longitudinal part is cast in with the other parts,
and is joined to the exterior frame A, and also to each of the cross-parts B, as indicated by E.
It will be observed that both the, parts A and B are formed in lshort waves, or.-corrugations, as indicated by a. b. These are curved so short, that a complete wave is formed in a length of bar of little more than twice the thickness.
The top of .my sections is plane. I can slice in the ordinary manner. Iran also introduce picks, devils claws, and other cleaning-tools, in the ordinary manner, as the waves, or short curves, by reason of their being velv short and small, do not interfere with the motion of cleaning-tools longitudinally of the slot, while they allow for the expansion or contraction at each bend, instead of concentrating it at the ends and middle, as when a general extended sweep is given to the bar.
I form my sections by moulding and casting from a pattern properly formed with thel desired ,corrugations I am aware that many forms Eof grate-bar sections have been proposed, with curves and crooks in the several parts. Y These I do not claim. I donot claim anything shown in the patent of N. B. Schofield, May 1, 1866, or intlrat of J. It. Smith, November 5, 1867 the former having the corrugations only upon the lower and thinner web of the bars, and not producing the effect of my invention, and the. latter having the curves in large sweeps, like the letter S, concentrating the flexion at the ends. A
I am aware that many approaches have been before made to my improved construction, and I do not claim any of the features separately; but
\Vhat I claim, is-
The construction ot' the rectangular corrugated frame, with corrugated cross-bars and surrounding corrugated margin, as herein specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereuntoset my name, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.`
