"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEICHT, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
BARREL-HEAD.
To all whom 'it may comme:
Be it known that I, JOHN LEICHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BarreLHeads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention c onsists in new and useful improvements in barrel heads or lids or covers for boxes or other receptacles, adapted to be removed or replaced at will, without any perceptible injury to the said barrel or other receptacles. Thus the coverings for the rece tacles that I have named and the receptac es themselves will be preserved for repeated use.
Another object of my invention is the convenience that is derived from its use. The lid of a barrel or box may be readily removed for the object of displaying the contents ol said receptacle, or for the examination. of the contentsV therein.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts as are hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings forming a part of the speciiication and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. y
Reference being had. to the drawings Figurel, is a lan view of a barrel equipped with a movab e head. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view on the line ZHZ, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a similar view, taken on the line 3-3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 1, is a horizontal, sectional view on the line eet, of Fig. 2, disclosing the under side of the removable barrel head. Fig. 5, is a plan view of the barrel, with the cover in positionto be removed. Fig.y 6, is a vertical sectional view of my device, taken on the line 6-6, of Fig. 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my invention is described as follows :H Two, or as many as may be desired, pieces oi metal or' otherv material 1, shaped in the form of a bracketl or brace is secured by suitable means to the inner walls of the barrel 2. Resting on two or more ci said brackets is a strip of wood or other material 3, whichis as long as the opening in said barrel, and about one third the width thereof, said strip having protruding upwardly from its center, and near one of its ends a headed bolt 4. The sections 5 and 6, whose greatest width is about one third the width oi the opening in saidbarrel, have their curved edges 7, V

shaped for the purpose ol' conforming to the croZe 8, cut in the inner walls oll said barrel. Said section 6 has passing through its center, a slot 9, the axis of said slot running at right anglesto the straight edge thereof; said. sklot being l'or the purpose ol' allowing the movement oi' the section 6, against the upper face el' the strip 3, so that the V shaped curved edge oil said section may be thrown out and into engagement with the croze ol' said barrel. Said section 5, is firmly l'astened to said strip 3, by means ol' screws or other substantial means. F our pieces o'l' wood or other material so shaped as to have their outer ends conform to the curvature oi' the inner surface oi' said barrel, and whose length. is equal to one halll the diameter ol' said barrel, less about oi' an inch each, are adapted, as stated, for said sections, -for engagement with the croze ol said barrel. These pieces oi' wood are numbered Q1, 1U, l1 and 12, respectively. Each two adjacent pieces oi wood 91, l() and 11 and 12, respectively', may be attached to each other by means ol' a common hinge 13, secured to the under surl'aces oi said pieces oi wood, or they may be provided with a sliplap joint in lieu ol' such hinges. Each two adjacent pieces have hinges 131 and 14, secured to their outer edges, connecting each to its adjacent section 5 or 6 these hinges are so constructed to admit o'l' a slide at least equal to the depth ol' the croze of the barrel. Two ol' said hinges 14, shall belong enough u on one wing thereol", to serve as a lever for iandle 141, adapted and for the purpose ol' ex Danding or contracting the barrel head. ius the pieces oi' wood 91, 10, 11 and 12, are contracting and expanding sections, and shall be referred to as such hereinafter. Said expanding and contracting sections are held in engagement with the croze oi' said barrel by means of the cani block 15, secured to the under l'ace ol' the lever lock 16, and which rotates against the upper surface ol said strip 3. Said lever lock, made ol' metal or other material, l'or spreading the contracting and expanding sections and holding the same in locked position when spread. is ivotally mounted upon a headed central bo t 17 said bolt assing through the lever lock, the cam, and tllie strip 3. lVhen the lever lock is at right angles to the wings 141, it is held in position by its own tension.
Though I have specifically described my invention I may exercise the right to make such modification and changes in the minor details and construction of the same, which clearly falls Within the scope and siirit ol' my invention, and particularly to su stitute a sliplap oint along and upon the edges of 91- 10,-11 and l2 where they meet each other, and thus to dispense with the `common hinges 13-.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' l. In a device of the character described, the combination of a barrel having a croze cut on the inner surface thereof, near its mouth, of a head therefor comprising a strip, means for the support of said strip, a bolt extending upwardly from the central portion of said strip, near one of its ends, two sections having a width of about one third the width of the mouth of said barrel, each of said sections having a straight edge and a curved edge, said curved edge being V shaped, and ada ted for engagement with the croze of sai barrel, one of said sections being secured to said strip, the other being provided with a slot through which passes said bolt of said strip, so as to adapt said last mentioned sec- Y tion to be thrown into and out of engagement with the croZe of said barrel, expanding and contracting sections arranged in pairs, each pair hinged together, slide hinges connecting each of said expanding and contracting 'sections to one of the first-named adjacent sections, said hinges adapting said expanding and contracting sections to be thrown into and out of engagement with the croZe of said barrel, two of said hinges having wings of a sufficient length to be used as handles for the manipulation of said barrel-head, a lever lock having secured to its under face a cam block, said cam block rotating against the upper face of said strip, and being for the purpose of throwing the V shaped edges of said expanding and contracting sections into enga 'ement with the croZe of said barrel, said everlock when at right angles to the long wings of said slide hinges, held in lace by its own tension, substantially as s iown and described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a barrel having a croze cut on the inner surface thereof, near its mouth, of a head therefor comprising a strip, brackets or braces for the support of said strip being secured to the inner walls of said barrel, two sections having a width of about one third the width of the mouth of. said barrel, each of said sections having a straight edge and a curved edge, said curved edge being V shaped and adapted for engagement with the Croze of said barrel, one of said sections being secured to said strip, the other adapted to slide against the upper surface of said strip, for the purpose of throwing the V shaped edge of said section into and out Aof engagement with the croze oll said barrel, expanding and .contracting sections arranged in pairs, each pair connected together, or provided with a slip lap joint in lieu ol' being connected together', suitable means forconnecting each of said expanding and contracting sections to one of the first-named adjacent sections, adapting the V shaped edges of said expanding and contracting sections to be thrown into and out of engagement with the croze of said barrel, means for the manipulation of said expanding and contracting sections, said means consisting of a lever-lock having secured to its under face a cam blocl, said cam block adapted to throw said expanding and contracting sections into position, said lever lock adapted to hold the same in such position, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a barrel having a c roze cut on the inner surface thereof, near its mouth, of a head therefor comprising a strip, means for the support of said strip, two sections each having a width of about one third the width of the mouth of said barrel, each of said sections having two edges, one straight, the other adapted for engagement with the croze of said barrel, one of said sections being secured to said strip, the other adapted to slide against the upper face of said strip, and to be thrown into and out of engagement with said barrel, expanding and contracting sections arranged in pairs, each pair connected together, suitable means for connecting each of said ex anding and contracting sections to one of t e first-named adjacent sections, adapting said expanding and contracting sections'to be throwninto and out of engagement with the croze of said barrel, means for the manipulation of said barrel head, means for throwing said expandingand contracting sections into engagement with said barrel, and means for holding the same in such position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afEx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
