Description
w. J. & T. P. COURTNEY. IMPLEMENT FOR SLITTING THE BNVELOP 0F TWIN INSULATED WIRES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 31. 1908.
Patented Apr. 20, 1909.
UNITED sTATns rA EnT emen.
WILLIAM J. COURTNEY AND THOMAS F. COURTNEY, OF :CHIGAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPLEMENT FOR "SLITTING THE ENVELOP OF INSULATED WIRES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that .We, WILLIAM J. COURT- NE)? and THOMAS F. COURTNEY,v citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago,
county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have. invented certain new and useful Improve a quick and easy method of slitting the outer envelop or insulating coating of twin insulated wlres priorto removing the same.
A further object of our, invention is to'provide an implement of a character. as mentioned, which may be made to form an attachment for pliers of suitable design already in use, or which may be manufactured simultaneously With pliers especially designedto accommodate the same.
A st1ll further object of our invention is to rovide an im lement which will be of the 'glhest possib e efficiency, and one-which wi be strong, durable, simple of. construction, hence, of low cost to manufacture. Other objects will appear hereinafter. With these objects 1n view, our invention consists generally in a pair of liers of novel construction, the upper jaw o the same bemember, said blade belng adapted when twin wires are properly positioned upon said backing member and the pliers drawn parallel with said wires, the jaws of the same being closed, to pierce and slit the insulating envelop ofsaid wires so that it may be readily removed by the fingers.
Our invention further consists in certain details of construction andarrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out the claims.
Our invention will be more readily under Specification of Letters Patent.

stood by reference to the accom ,anying drawings forming a part of this speci cation, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of our device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same taken on the line mas of Fig. 2.
- Referring now to the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the upper and lower jaws, respectively, of a pair of pliers which may be of any ordinary or preferred form, and 3 and 3 the respective handle ortions thereof, "4 indicating the pin by which said jaws are hinged together. Suitably secured as by soldering or by screws, the latter being used in the attachment form of our device, to one side of the jaw 1 and laterally extending therefrom, is a channelshaped member '5, the channel 6 formed by the depending ears 7 of said member 5 bein lon 'tudinally extending, that is, paralle Wit the sides of saidjaws. Detachably se cured as by a screw 8, so as to facilitate sharpening or renewing of the same, to said member 5, the same preferably resting in a recess 9 provided for the rece )tion thereof, is the shank 10 of a downwar ly extending, preferably tool steel, blade 11. Said blade shank 10 is so ositioned upon said member 5 that the bla e-edge 12 of the de ending blade 11 thereof extends substantia ly centrally and vertically in said channel 6 for reasons hereinafter stated. Suitably secured as by soldering or by screws, the latter being preferably used in the attachment form of our device, to the side of the jaw 3 and laterally extending therefrom, the same being positioned directly below the member 5 and blade 11, is an angular member 13, the horizontally extending portion 14 of said member 13 being adapted to act as a backing or support for wires durin the process of removing the envelop of t e same.
In using the device, the jaws of the phers are first opened, the twin wires to be separated being placed upon the suppert or backing 14; whereupon the jaws are closed. It is i'ngl positioned centrally in the channel 6, wi pierce the envelop of the twin wire necessarily resting between the wire members of said twin wire. By drawing the pliers backwardly to the end of thewire, one sideof the obvious that as the plier jaws are closed as mentioned, the blade 11 by reasbn of its beenvelop will be slit, as clearly shown in Fig. 1
'of the accorn an in drawings and bv re b v a, 7 .1
versing the Wire the opposite side of the envelop of the same may also be slit, whereupon said envelop may readily be removed by the fingers. By the provision of the device as just described in a pair of pliers, it will obviously facilitate means for easily, quickly and eliiciently removing an insulating envelop or other coating of twin wires without danger of disturbing the insulating coverin of the se arate twin wire members, and Wil obviate t e usual method of se )flrating wires which is generally done with a knife blade or other like tool, in which case the insulation of the separate wires is almost invariably cut and bruised, making it neces sary to su ply other insulation'for the same, thus resu ting in a waste of time and labor, hence a financial loss.
In our preferred form of pliers, for the purpose of severing or actually cutting the wire, we provide'each of the jaws of said pliers with a cutting or knife-edge 15, the latter constituting a wire clipper, and recess each jaw beyond said knife-edge as at 16 for obvious reasons. Said clipper is not an important feature in our invention however, but We show the same in order to illustrate a handy tool of which our invention is the central and main part.
Having described our invention what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:
1. An implement of the character (lo-- 2. An implement ol' the charaeter de-i scribed comprising two members hinged together, a supporting plate projecting to one side of one of said members, a channelshaped guide projecting to the same side of the other member and located above the plate, and having a recess in its outer face, a blade shank secured in the r cess of the guide, and a blade on said shank leated at the center of the guide and projecting down beside the same.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. WILLIAM J. COURTNEY. THOMAS P. OUR'INEY.
