A. J. COMPTON. ADJUSTABLE PAINT BRUSH HOLDER.
ABIPLIOATION FILED MAR. 25, 1908.

ADJUSTABLE PAIN T-BRUSH HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Application filed March 25, 1908. Serial No. 423,243.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. COMPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the'county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Adjustable Paint-Brush Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable paint brush holder, and the object oi the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby the handle of a brush may be readily extended so that the operator may conveniently paint portions of a building or the like not readily accessible with the ordinary short handled brushes.
1N ith these objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of elements, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a paint brush provided with my extension device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through one of the sockets. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device applied to an ordinary flat brush. Fi 5 is a front elevation of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, and refer ring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof the numeral 1 designates the handle of an ordinary brush. This handle 1 is adapted to be received within the brush holding socket 2 of my improvement. This socket 2 is provided upon one of its ends, and adjacent its bore with an ear 3, having a central perforation adapted for the reception of a threaded bolt 4, provided by a similar ear 5 secured upon the handle holding socket 6. The sockets 2 and 6 may be constructed of any desired or preferred material, and the socket 6 is provided with a closed head 7 adapted to prevent the operating handle 8 from extending through the bore of the socket. The sockets 2 and 6 are also provided with threaded openings adapted for the rece tion of retailiing elements 9 and 10, by w ich the brush and operating handle is secured upon the sockets. By providing the ears 3 and 5 of the socket members offset from the body of the sockets, it will be seen that the socket 2 may be adjusted at any desired angle in relation to the socket 6, and that the handle of the brush 1 may project beyond the socket drawings. When the sockets are not in use for extending a brush, it will be readily seen that they will be folded upon each other and conveniently carried wit-hm the pocket of an operator.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a method securing a flat brush to the operating handle socket 6. In these views I have provided a member 11 having an car 12 adapted to engage the ear 5 of the socket 6, and to be re tained in any desired position thereon by the threaded element 13, engaging a projection 14 provided by the car 12. The member 11 is also provided with a threaded extension 15 at a substantial right angle to the member 14. This threaded member 15 is adapted to be positioned within a suitable perforation provided upon the brush 16, and to be retained thereon by a winged nut 17. The member 11 is also provided with teeth 18, adapted to engage the opposite face of the head of the brush 16 to that engaged by the winged nut 17 The face of the car 12 may be corrugated as shown, and the element 11 may be retained as a permanent fixture upon the brush 16 should it be desired.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the character described, a socket having means whereby a handle is secured therein, said socket being provided with a head and having an ear on one side offset from the body of and extending in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the socket, and a brush holding socket being provided with means whereby a brush handle is retained therein and being provided with an car on one side offset from the body of and extending in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the socket, and means whereby the ears are retained in. a desired position u on each other.
In testimony w iereof I athx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW J COMPTON.
