P. MAYOR.
YSPOOL HOLDER.
APPLIUATION FILED JUNL1 27.1908.

By @Mm ATTORNEYS rrrrnnr eerie.
FREDERICK MAYOR, Olr NE YORK, il. Y.
SPOOL-HOLDE R.
ne. elaine.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed April 13, 1909.
` Application led June 27, 1908. Serial No, 440,632.
To all whom it may concern:
Be xt known that l, FREDERICK MAYOR, 'a suine-ct of the Emperor of Austuw-Hungary and King oi Hungary, and a residentol the ride e holder ol' this nature adapted to he applied 'to the machine either ver really or horizontally, the saine embodying two heads arranged at the op ositr` ends ol' fr cushioned stein, one olI serio Iheads heing permanently 'attached to the stem and provided with a nuinher ol' spinlsupporting pins, and the. other head detacl'rahly applied 'to the stem and secured thereto hy a novel lock.
liel'erence is to he had to the accompanying dra-wings forming' a part ol' this speci'liL-.ation, in which similar characters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. .Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the prelerr d torni ol' my improved spool holder; Fig. 2 a section through the locking head-o1'. the holder substantially' on the line 2---2 oll` Fig. li, looking in the direction ol' the arrow; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional View similar to the section shown in Fig. witlrthe looking bolt in a osition to permit ol' the removal ol' the head from the stem; l1" ig. l is it section on the lino Lthe ol lt" og. l looking in the direction ol the arrow; and n ,3. 5 is a perspective view of the lock barrel and the key for operating,T the seine.
More speoically descr"hed,'tl1e construction oi' the holder includes a hollow stem 10, to the opposite ends of which are applied hea- ds 11 and 12 respectively, the head 1'1 .being thrended on the stem or otherwise fperinanently ottoched thereto, and the head l2 detaehahly secured to the stem by a. loclring mechanism hereinafter described. Erich head is provided with a boss on its inner face .to 'torina substantial hearing with the stem, and between these bosses is laceda collar vor' sleeve Z of rubber or ot 1er equivalent elastic material to provide a cushion hetwee'n the two heads, which serves to absorb the vibration when the holder is in use on the machine. f
0n the inner lace of the'head 1 1 a number of bosses, similar to the one at the renter, are Cf. "fularly arranged and receive the threaded ends of an equal number of spool- 'sunortine v)ins 13 the ins heine' of such l l c l f c length as to project (lose to the inner face'ot' the head 12 as clearl f shown in Fw. 1. The
4 head 12 is eonstrueted on its outer face with a diametrirally arranged head or rib 14- whii'h serves as a housing for the look above mentioned, the same eoi'isistingl of a holt 15 slidaele in a horfl longitudinally-of the rib,
and n. hariw-l 16 for actuating the holt ond. reif'oluhlj.' mounted at right-angles thereto.
The bolt passage at one sidel intersects the hores for receiving the barrel 16 and the stem 10, and at these points the diameters ol the barrel and the stein are reduced as respettively indicated at 17 and 18, which permits of the l'ree passage of the bolt, which, in its normal position, under the influence of' a. spring' 1), as shown in Fig. 2, locks the barrel and pin to the head. The spring 19 which is interposed between the inner end. of the holt andthe bottom of its here or 'Jassagey tends to force the holt in contact vwith a plug' 2() threaded into the outer end ol the passage filter the spring and holt are inserted. At
that point ol the length of the. holt which is arranged between the stem and barrel when the holt is in locking position, is provided o circumferential groove 21, similar' to those. provided in connection with the stem and barrel, and the holt is further provided with adjacent circumferential grooves 22, the inner one of which connects with the boreof the borrel when the holt is in lookin posi tion, as shown in Fig. 2. The barre lris held against withdrawal. not only by the holt hut also by a pin 23, projecting into a circumferential groove 24. The barrel is also longitudinally slotted as indicated at 25 for the insertion of a such as shown in Fig. 5. This key in. connection with a leaf 26 l with notches at opposite sides to register with the circumferential groove, 24 in the barrel, and a similar notch at its end to register with a pin 27 projecting from the. head to the inner end of the barrel, this particular construction, however, being suse eptible of many modifications according to the character of the key which 1s to he used. l The exposed hollow end of the stem l() adi mits of the holder being 'vertically supported on the s ooi l() of the sewing machine, or if desired t 1e. holder may be supported on this pin in a horizontal position, for which purpose I provide a sinn the rib 14.
,Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a stem having heads secured to the o posite ends thereof, one of which is provided) with spool-supporting pins, and a cushion interposed between the two-,heads and arranged on the stem.
t 2. The combination of a stein having a circumferential groove near one end thereof, a
head secured to the other end thereof, a head having a holt for engaging the groove of the stem and locking the head thereto, a barrel revoluble in the 'last mentioned head having key-controlled means for actuating the bolt, and spool-sup orting pins attached to .one of said hea( s and projecting close to the other head.
3. The combination of a stem having a ar bore 28 in one end'of head attac-hed to one end, a seiond head g having a holt for locking it to the other end o' the stem, a key-operated barrel carried by the second head for actuating the bolt, and spool-supporting pins arranged between the heads.
4. The combination of a stern having a head permanently attached to one end provided with spool-supporting pins and eireumferential groove at its opposite end, a second head having a springpressed holt adapted to engage the-groove of the stem when the head is applied thereto, and pro vided with a circumferential groove, and a key-operated head,` having means for forcing the holt against the tension of the s ring to bring the said groove in register vvitii the stem.
5'. A spool holder having a hollow stem adapting it to receive the spool-supporting pin oi a sewing machine, a head attached to one end of the stern, having s ooi-supporta. pins, and a head locked to tiie opposite en of the'stem,- having a bore for receiving said spoohsupporting in of the machine and sup ortmgthe ho der in an approxirnatelj,v horlzontal position.
In testimony whereof i have' signed my name to this specification in the 'presence of two subseiihing witnesses.
