GEORGE G. LYMAN, OF INIEPENDENCE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND F. LYMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
Lette/rs Patent No. 91,757, dated .Tame 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the saine.
First, in the vibrating levers and their connections with the pitman.
Second, in the manner and device forr throwing said levers, lSto., in and out of gear with the driving-wheel cams.
Third, in the driving power operating on said-levers by roller-cams set on the inside of two driving-wheels instead of one, as in my former patent.
Fourth, in a new and independent method of' lraising the sickle-bars, by means of an eccentric lever working on a chain and pulley on` a main frame, bringing all the bearings on the centre or axle of the machine.
In order to enable others skilled inthe art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will no w proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Figure 2,-a plan view of the machine.
Figure 3 is a side View of one of the driving-wheels with its roller-cams Figure 4 is a side view of the level', by the use of which the vibrating levers are thrown in and out of gear; and w Figure 5 is a plan view of the front end of the machine, (with fig. 4 removed,) showing the front ends of the vibrating levers, with the carriage operating ou the same, to throw them in and out of gear.
A represents a horizontal frame, attached at or near its centre to the axle B, which is provided with a driving-wheel, C, at each end outside otlsaid frame. Atv the front end of the `frame A is securedthe tongue D.
From the axle B, just inside of the frame A, is suspended a box, E, the axle passing through the sides of said box at or near its 'centre, and to the rearv end of said box the braces are attached.
For the pulpose of raising or lowering the box E, a chain or rope, a, is attached to the front and rear end of said box, the chain passing up around pulleys b b, in the front and rear end of the frame A, `and is, at a suitable point on said' frame, attached to a lever, c, pivoted in a slotin` the side of the frame A.
rIhis lever c is acted upon below the frame A by an eccentric lever, d, so that by the action `of said eccentric lever upon the lever c and chain a, the rear end of the box E may be raised'or lowered at will.
0n t-he shaft B, inside of the box E, are placed two smaller wheels F F, a suitable distance apart, and of such diameter that the outer rims of said wheels will -be as close to the bottom of the box E as possible without touching the same.
.lhe axle B, forming the centre, as Well for the irame A as for the box E, it will be seen that it will make no difrerence what position the box E is in the wheels FF will always be at the same distance from the bottom of the same.
Inside of the rims ofthe wheels F F, and on the iiiner side, is placed aseries of rollers, e eLat equal distance apart, which rollers operate two vibrating levers G and G', placed on the bottom of the box E.
The rollers `e e are, however, so placed in the wheels F F that each roller on one wheel is opposite the space between two rollers on the other.
In the centre of the bottom of the box E is placed a bar or slotted plate, which holds the two vibrating levers G and G' down to the said bottom, but allows a lateral or, vibrating motion of the levers when operated upon by the rollers c e, the vibrating levers being for this purpose on their outer sides providedl with a cam-shaped projection, as shown in dotted lines in g. v2. v
It Vwill readily be understood that it', for instance, the frontends of the levers G and G were kept'a suitable distance apart, and the front ends of said levers had some yielding substance between them, then, if
the machine was in motion, the rollers e c, operating upon the cam-projections alternately, would give the front ends a vibrating motion.
lo effect this, I pivot the front end of the lever G- in some suitable manner to the bottom of 'the box E, and against a cross-bar, H, placed a short distance from the front end of saidbox.; this end of the lever G of course near or close to the side of the box.
The front end of the other lever, G', is made movable, so that it can be thrown in and out of gear at will. This is done by a lever, f, pivoted in a slot in thecentre of the cross-bar H, one end of said lever extending in rear and the other in front of said cross bar.
The end in rear of the cross-bar operates upon the front end of the lever G', while the other end. enters a slot in the side of a'carriage, I, placed between the front end of the box E and the cross-bar H, as seen in iig. 5.
One end of ,the carriage I is slotted, and provided with a pin, t, which is surrounded by. the forked lower cular projecti0n,.n,.having a recess on each side, in
Aby the rollers e e.
lnecessary to release the arm 71- when the vibrating end of a lever, g, said lever being pivoted in a slot on a hoard, J, which covers the front end of the box E, as seen in iig. 2. 4
It will be seen that by turning the lever q to one side, the carriage I is moved in such a manner as to cause the lever f to press the front end of the lever G outwards, holding it in position to be acted upon The lever g is held by an arm, h, so as to cause the effect above described, as shown in tig. 4.
To throw the lever G' out of gear again, it is only motion of said lever will at once cause its front end to move inwards. v
To the bar above mentioned7 which holds the vibrating levers'iu the centre of the box E, is attached an arm, k, to the rear end of which is pivoteda connecting-link or arm, m.
Thisvarm is, at a suitable point, provided with acirpivoted to the rear end of said connecting-bar.
The braces o o are connected with the under side of the 'frame A by means of a brace-bar, as seen in iig. l.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the'vibrating levers G G and pivoted connecting-link, or bar M, having a circular projection, n, with a recess on each side, in which the levers operate, substantially shown and described.
2. The arrangement and combination of the vibrat ing levers G G, lever f, carriage I, forked lever g, and arm h, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The arrangement of two wheels on the axle of the niachine, with rollers on the inside of said wheels, to operate the vibrating levers, substantially as and for the purposes herein setfort-h.
4. The arrailgement of the eccentric lever d, lever c, and ,chain a, working on the main frame A, for the purpose of raisingI the sickle-bars, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 15th day of February, 1869. GEORGE G. LYMAN.
Witnesses S. S. ALLEN, J licon MINz, JOHN SMITH.
