To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LDANIEL Braces, citizen of the United States, and residentof the boroug-h of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to condensed record or billing attachments therefor, and theobject of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and efficient device of the character specified.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device for the purpose specified which is in the nature of an attachment that can be readily attached to or detached from existing typewriting machines without modifying or altering said machines.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear my invention consists of the novel features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a detail top plan view of the platen and platen frame of one form of typewriting machine showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same looking .in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. F 3 is a detail face view of the combined friction plate and adjustable stop, the view looking in the direction opposite that inclicated by the arrow in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail front elevation, partly in section, of the condensed record billing device.
I have shown my invention applied to a No. 6 Remington machine to which it may be applied without altering the structural features of said machine, though it should be understood that the invention maybe applied to various forms of typewriting machines.
The platen frame 1 of the machine has the usual cylindrical platen 2 mounted to turn therein, the platen having a line spacing wheel 3 secured thereto and with which a line spacing pawl 4 cooperates. The pawl 4: is pivoted at 5 to a line spacing lever 6 pivoted to the platen frame at 7 and having the usual hand lever 8 by which the pawl L t is actuated, the parts being restored to the normal position by a spring 8 The pawl 4 has a tail 9 that cooperates with the different contact faces on the adjustable device 10 to afford difij'erent extents of line spacing in accordance with the adjustment of said device. A finger wheel 11 is secured to the righthand of theplaten shaft to turn the platen.
The parts thus far described constitute parts of the well known No. 6 Remington machine and the usual finger wheel at the left-hand end of the platen shaft is replaced by a finger wheel 12 secured to a sleeve 13 that receives the left-hand end of the platen shaft and is secured thereto by a set screw 14:. Before the finger wheel 12 is secured in place on the shaft an indicating wheel, carrier or disk 15 is seated on the sleeve 13 and is free to turn thereon. The sleeve has a peripheral groove 16 therein that is adapted to receive the inner edges 17 of a bifurcated friction plate 18 so that the plate straddles the sleeve which is received within the bifurcation in the plate. One end 19 of the plate is received within the circumferential flange 20 on the indicating disk and bears against the inner face thereof. The opposite end of the plate has an outwardly extending member 21 that extends over the periphery of the indicating wheel and terminates in a finger 22 that projects toward the wheel 12 so as to embrace the disk. The friction plate is bent and is resilient so as to exert a lateral pressure on the indicating wheel whereby when the friction plate is sprung into place in the groove 16, as shown in Fig. 4, it locks the wheel against longitudinal displacement from the sleeve 13 and exerts a pressure on the wheel which forces it against the finger wheel 12 or against the enlargement 23 of the sleeve 13, thus producing sufficient frictional contact between the parts to cause the wheel to turn with the platen but to enable the wheel to be arrested without retarding the rotation of the platen.

From an examination of Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be observed that the edge 27 on the part 21 is adapted to register with the bottom of each numeral on the indicating wheel and constitute an indicator that facilitates a relative adjustment between the adjustable stop 24 and the indicating wheel. Furthermore, it. will be observed that the edge 27 is alined with the contact face or edge 28 of the stop 24: when the two stops are in contact, as shown in Fig. 1, and that therefore the lower edge 28 of the fixed stop constitutes a pointer or indicating means by which to determine when any given number is at the fixed stop or indicator.
In the use of my billing attachment or condensed record device the dial is set so that number 1 appears opposite the fixed indicator on the carriage, as shown in Fig. 1. The selection of the number 1 is an arbitrary one and applies to all characters of condensed billing work which may be done on the machine. At this time the adjustable stop 24 is located at any position at the opposite side of the disk. A bill head is then inserted in the machine and the platen and dial with the bill head are rotated in the direction of the line feed of the platen until the first writing line on the bill, whether it be the name or date line or the first line on the body of the bill, appears at the printing position, and this is determined in the first instance by turning the platen frame back and inspecting the work. Whatever numeral on the dial or disk appears in alinement with the edge 28 of the fixed stop 25 should be observed and the adjustable indicator 21 is then set so that the top edge thereof will be at the bottom of the number opposite the fixed indicator or stop and the adjustable stop 24: will be brought into contact with the fixed stop 25. It may be assumed, as an example, that the first writing line on the bill head is fourteen lines from the top thereof, then when the bill head has been brought with the first writing line in the printing position the numeral 15 on the dial will appear in register with the fixed stop 25. The platen, dial and bill head are then turned back together a certain number of spaces which are fixed arbitrarily, and which may he, say, ten spaces in the No. 6 Remington machine,
after which the carbon and the record sheet are inserted between the bill sheet and platen. The object of turning back the platen withthe bill head for the insertion of the record sheet and carbon is to enable the leading edge of the record sheet to be positioned a sufficient distance in advance of the first line to be written so as to leave a requisite margin at the top of the record sheet. The bill head and record sheet are then turned forward with. the platen until the adjustable stop 2% on the dial is brought against the fixed stop or indicator on the platen frame or carriage. The bill is then written and when completed a carbon copy of the bill will be produced on the record sheet. The operator line spaces forward, say twice, in order to provide proper spacing between the different bills on the con densed record sheet. While this forward line spacing movement of the platen with the bill sheet, record sheet and carbon is be ing effected the adjustable stop 24 is against the fixed stop 25 and the adjustable stop and dial will be held against movement with the platen. The record sheet, bill head and dial are then turned back with the platen until the number 1 again appears opposite the fixed stop or indicator 25. A new bill is then inserted without at this time removing the written bill, and the platen is again turned forward until the adjustable stop 24 is opposite the fixed indicator or stop 25. The second bill is written and after it is completed the platen is given a double line space movement to provide the proper spacing between the bills on the record sheet and then the platen is again turned back with the record sheet, carbon and bills until the figure 1 is again opposite the fixed indicator and a third bill is inserted without at this time removing the previously written bills, and the bills, record sheet and carbon are again turned forward with the platen and the dial until the adj ustable stop 24- on the dial is opposite or in contact with the fixed indicator on the carriage, at which point, generally, the first bill will be in a position to slip out or it will be fed out of the machine, while the third bill is being written, and so on, the bills themselves feeding out automatically as the platen is fed forward. l/Vhen the record sheet is filled with entries it is removed from the machine, the dial is set so that figure 1 is opposite the fixed indicator 25 on the carriage, and a bill head is inserted and turned to the number 15 on the dial previously determined in setting the parts when the second record sheet and carbon are inserted and the bills written as before. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a finger wheel therefor, a platen frame, a carrier between said platen frame and finger wheel, means for frictionally connecting the carrier to the platen whereby the platen and carrier may be turned together or independently of each other, circularly arranged indices on said carrier, an adjustable stop on the carrier, a cooperating stop on the platen frame, and frictional means connecting the adjustable stop to the carrier.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen shaft to which the platen is secured, a platen frame, a finger wheel secured to the platen shaft, a car rier which is free to turn around the platen shaft and which is situated between the finger wheel and platen frame, means for frictionally connecting the carrier to turn with the finger wheel and platen and which affords a movement of the platen and carrier independently of each other, an adjustable stop carried by the carrier, and a cooperating stop carried by the platen frame.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen shaft to which the platen is secured, a platen frame, a finger wheel secured to the platen shaft, a carrier which is free to turn around the platen shaft and which is situated between the finger wheel and platen frame, means for frictionally connecting the carrier to turn with the finger wheel and platen and which afiords a movement of the platen and carrier independently of each other, an ad justable stop carried by the carrier, and a cotiperating stop carried by the platen frame, the friction means for connecting the platen and carrier constituting friction means for connecting the adjustable stop to the carrier.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen shaft, a friction plate which is fixed against movement longitudinally of the shaft but which is free to turn around the shaft, an indicating wheel which is free to turn around the platen shaft and against which the friction plate bears to cause the indicating wheel to turn with the platen shaft or to a'Jford an independent movement of the platen and indicating wheel, a stop on the friction plate, and a cooperating fixed stop.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen shaft, an indicating wheel which is free to turn around the platen shaft and which has circularly arranged indices therein, a friction plate which is fixed against movement longitudinally of the platen shaft but which is free to turn around the shaft and cooperates with the indicating wheel to cause it to turn with the platen, indicating means on said friction plate that cooperates with the indices on the indicating wheel, a stop that is also carried by said friction plate, and a cooperating fixed stop.

In a typewriting machine, he combination of a platen, a platen shaft, a fingerwheel secured to the platen shaft, an indicating wheel that is free to turn around the platen shaft, a friction plate which is fixed against movement longitudinally of said shaft and bears against the indicating wheel and forces it into contact with the finger wheel, a stop carried by the indicating wheel, and a cooperating fixed stop.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen shaft, a finger wheel secured to the platen shaft, an indicating wheel that is free to turn around the platen shaft, a friction plate which is fixed against movement longitudinally of said shaft and bears against the indicating wheel and forces it into contact with the finger wheel, a stop that is carried directly bythe friction plate and is frictionally connected to and adjustable on the indicating wheel, and a cooperating fixed stop.
