IMPROVEMENT I N SELF-CLEARING WATH-KEYS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom it 'may concem Y Be it known that I,`WILLIAM N.MART1N, ot' Prov ilence, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode of the drawings.
The squareopening inthe stem of my improved watch-key extends longitudinally through the same,
and terminates in a cylindrical chamber, in the body of the key. e Y
'A core, b c c {1,wh`ose shape and location within the .the key are shown in figs. 3 and 4, is operated in the manner'and for the purpose hereinafter -set brth.
The enlargement, c c, of the key-core b c c d,'fits accurately within the chamber inthe body ofthe key,
andthe spring f, which encloses the short core-shank, d, and works between the Acore-enlargement c c and the closing-head g, of the hollow body of the key, serves the purpose of retaining the said core inthe position shown in iig. 3, at alltimes when not used for -wi11ding'a \vatch, and, consequently, when carried within the pocketotthe owner, i: will be impossible for; any lint or dirt to accumulate within theiwinding-aperture in its stem, to
be thence carried into the interiorof a watch.
The pin c, which projects from the enlargement c c of' the key-core, works' in a longitudinal slit, i, in one side `of the hollow body of the key, land the lateral re cesses, or notches k kat the upper -end of' said slit, enable the key-core to be -caught and retained iin the position shown iu lig. 4, during the operation of winding a watch, the said operation being` as-follows :1
W'hen the key is pressed onto the winding-arbor of' a watch, the key-core will, by said pressure, bc fenced inward until arrestedby its pin e'being brought to the end of. the Vslit '12,- mthe barrel of the key, and then the act of turning the key to wind the watch will carry the said core-pin e into one of' the notches k, at'- the head of' the slit i, and `retain .the key-core in its withdrawn position during the said winding-operation 5 and when that is accomplished,'a slight reverse movement of said key will detach -the core-'pin e from its lodgluent in either of its retaining-notches, when the spring f will instantly project the key-core to 'the protecting position shown in tigf.

What I claim thereinas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Fatent, is'- Ihev dirtexcluding -key-ecore b c c d, when operated in conjunction with the spring f, the. core-pin c, and the notched or T-hezded slit t' k, substantially inthe manner herein set forth.
