RIFLE-SIGHT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIAS E. GIBBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ukiah, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rifle-Sights; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in rifle sights.

The object of the invention is to provide a front sight for rifles by means of which accurate aim may be quickly taken.

A further object is to provide a front sight adapted to be used in connection with a rear sight by means of which the rifle may be used for fine target shooting or for quick shots at game.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side view of a sight constructed in accordance with the invention Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 4 is a vertical, cross sectional view.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the sight, which consists of a cylindrical barrel or ferrule 2 formed integral with which is a base portion 3 having inclined or dove-tail edges 4 by means of which the same is secured Within the dove-tail notch or recess formed in the outer end of the rifle barrel to receive the same.

Arranged across the center of the barrel or ferrule-portion 2 midway between its ends is a cross bar 5. The ends of the bar 5 are preferably seated and secured in apertures formed in the opposite sides of the ferrule, as shown. On the upper side of the bar 5 mid way between. the ends of the same and in the center of the ferrule is formed a substantially Specification of Letters Patent.

In long distance shooting the bullet in leaving the muzzle of the gun drops to a greater or less degree and in order to compensate for this fall of the bullet, it is necessary to elevate the muzzle of the gun or hold the same to point above the object being shot at. In the usual construction of front sights the object is covered to such an extent as to interfere with the accurate sighting of the gun when the muzzle is raised as above described, whereas, with the construction of sight as herein shown and described this difliculty is entirely eliminated, as there is nothing to obstruct the view above or below the triangular precision piece of the sight, thus providing for the accurate sighting of the gun when shooting point blank or aiming above the object to compensate for the fall of the bullet.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claim.
