Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1908.
GAS-COGK.
Patented March 9, 1909.
Serial No. 420,266.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CnAnLns H. WILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis city and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas- Cocks, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to gas cocks, the object of the invention being to provide a gas cock embodying means whereby the valve or plug of the cock may be locked in a closed or cut-ofi' position, thereby preventing the surreptitious unlocking oi the gas cook by unauthorized persons and at the same time avoiding the necessity on the part of the gas company and its employees from carrying separate locks to and from a great number of meters for the purpose of locking the same as is now the general custom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gas cook with a lock of such construction and arrangement that the portion oi the cock embodying the lock may be removed and replaced by another corresponding element, thus enabling the element having the lock incorporated therein to be carried to a repair shop and iixed without impairing the working of the meter or gas cook which controls the same.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a gas cock embodying the present invention, showing the open position of the parts. Fig. 2 is a similar view show ing the gas cock closed and the movable p arts thereof locked. Fig. 3 is a plan view. of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the cock and 2 the core or plug thereof, the said parts being, in the main, of the usual construction and relative arrangement.
In carrying out the present invention, the 1 core is provided with an arm or extension 3 which carries a lock at containing lock mechanism ol any suitable character and preferably embodying and including a spring bolt 5 which projects beyond the end of the lock case as shown in Fig. 1, the lock also embody in a key hole 6 adapted to receive a key by means of which the lock bolt 5 may be re tracted.
The body of the cock is provided with an arm or extension 7, at the end of said arm or extension there being a laterally projecting keeper 8 having a notch or socket 9 formed in the inner face thereof into which the projecting end of the bolt 5 is adapted to snap when the parts are turned from the open position shown in Fig. 1 to the closed position shown in Fig. 2. In the open position of the cook, the arm or extension 3 is right angles to the arm or extension 7 while in the closed position of the cock the said arms extend in the same direction and overlie each other as shown in Fig. It is in this closed position that the bolt of the lock engages the notch ol' the keep er and when the parts are in this position, the flow or" gas is cut oil and cannot be turned on except by the person having a key to the lock. The core or plug 2 is provided at one end with a wrench projection or head 10 which facilitates turning the cock to an open or closed position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-
A gas cook comprising a body, a plug adapted to turn therein, an integral extension arm on the body having an angular terminal flange, an integral extension arm on said plug, and a key operated lock carried by said plug arm and embodying a bolt movable into and out of engagement with said angular terminal flange, substantially as des wribed.
In testimony whereof I alhx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. WILEY. Witnesses:
