UNITED STATES PAT ARGYLE CAMPBELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ENTERPRISE RAILWAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATIONOF ILLINOIS.
. Dome-can.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 13, 1908. Serial No. 4.43,.250.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARGYLE CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dump-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to improvements in dump cars, and more particularly to the. operating mechanism for dump car doors.-
The object of my invention is to provide a dump car door operating mechanism of a simple, strong, efficient and durable construction, by which a plurality of doors may be simultaneously operated from the same operating shaft, and in which the doors will be held or locked securely in their closedposition, and in which the load on the doors will have no tendency to unlock or release 1e door operating mechanism, and in which the strain of the looking or load supporting mechanism for the doors will be exerted upon opposite sides of the operating shaft so as to neutralize each other and thus exert "no bending or side strain 'upon the operating shaft.
My invention consists in the combination with a plurality of-dump car doors, of a common operating shaft for the several doors, a plurality of winding drums on said shaft, the same being referabl-y made-in one piece, each having a stand preferably shouldered locking face, the drums being polygonal and ireferably four sided, a pan of locking i)lOCl S, each preferably having a shouldered face adapted to engage and interlock-With the shouldered face of its d-rc 1 a plurality of connecting links between each lockingblock and its drum, the same being preferably three in number for-each drum and fitting and corresponding to the three-sides of the drum while the locking blockfits-and corresponds withthe remaining sidea'thereof, and supporting connections between the several doors and locking blocks, the lockingfaces on the twov drums being arranged opposite to each other, so that the, common operating shaft-is embraced betwecn'iihe opposing forces of the doorsacting against t e locking blocks upon the opposite sides of the operating shaft.
My invention also-consists 1n the novel construction of parts and devices, and in. the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more part cular specified 1n the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a' part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of a dump car embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig.- 3 is an enlarged vertical cross section on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view showing the common operating shaft and connecting links unwound from the drum. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of thepart-s shown in Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail sect-ions on lines 66 and 7-7 of Fig. 1 .butshowing the locking blocks and connecting links intheir locked or closed position. Fig. 8 is a detail plan view of the same. Fig. 9'is a detail perspective view of the winding drums,-the same being made integral. Fig:
10 is a vertical crosssection illustrating a modification. In the drawing,1 represents a dump car of any suitable kind-or construction, 2 the intermediate sills, 3 the side sills, l -the upper floor plates of the car. The dura doors 5', 5'and 6, 6 are preferably arrange inpairs, each pair having hinges 7 so that theswing ing edges of both doorsof-each pair 5; 5 or 6 6 come together. The doors may be arranged to swing open transversely of the car as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or longitudinally asshoivn in Fig. 10. .Both pairs of doors 5,
5 and 6, 6 are simultaneously operated by a common operating shaft journaled in suitable supporting brackets 9 on the car frame and preferably arranged between the two pairs=ofdoors 5, 5 and 6, 6.
The common operating shaft 8 is provided with two winding drums 10, 11, both preferably'in one integral piece for-convenience in manufacturing. Each of the winding (i unis 10, His preferably of a polygonal shape and four'slded, the two drums being preferably duphcates of each other. Each of the finding drums has a locking face 12,

around the drum Connected to the pivot lugs 14, 14 "are connecting links 16,16 and locking blocks 17, 17 the locking blocks hav ing each a locking face 18, preferably furnished with a shoulder 19 and adapted to engage the .locking faces of the winding drums when the connecting links are wound around the drum. Each set of connecting links 16 are preferably three in number, and
with the locking block thus correspond to the number of faces of the winding drum. The
pivot lugs 14, 14 on the two winding drums are'located-diametrically opposite each other so that the two locking blocks 17 17 thus come on the horizontalcenter line of the com' nections 20 are represented as chains or flexible connections and are furnished with branches 21, 21 extending to each door of each pair. The chains or connections 20 extend over gliide pulleys 22. The common operating s aft 8 is furnished with an operating lever'23 and ratchet24.
The dump car door operating\ mechanism is preferably duplicated 'at eac end of the doors 5, 5 and 6, 6 as will be readily understood from the drawings.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 10, the invention is shown as applied to a side dump coke car, the doors 5 and 6 being longltudinally instead of transversely hinged. In this modification, the connections 20 between the locking blocks and the swinging edges of the doors are re resented as being rods instead of chains. T e operating mechanism illustrated in this figure is the same as above described. The locking face 18 of each of the locking blocks 17 17 extends for its major portion past the center line of the shaft when the doors are closed and the looking mechanism in locked position, so that .the
load of the doors has no tendency to turn. the shaft in the door releasing direction.
I claim:' I
1. In a dump car, the combination witha plurality of load supporting-doors, of a com-. mon operating shaft, apair ofwinding drums on said shaft each hav ng a locking face, the locking faces of the two drums being on oposite sides of the shaft, a pair of lockingv locks having locking faces engaging the locking faces of the drums on op osite sides of the shaft, flexible connecting hu (8 between each drum and each locking block, and connections between the locking blocks and the doors, substantially as specified.
2. In a dump car, the combination witha plurality of load supporting doors, of a common operating shaft, a pair of winding drums on said shaft each having a locking face, the locking faces of the two drums being on oposite sides of the shaft, a pair of locking locks having locking faces engaging the locking faces of the drums on opposite sides of the shaft, flexible connecting links between each drum and each locking block and connections between the locking blocks and the doors, said locking faces on the, drums and locking blocks being furnished with interengagling shoulders, substantially as specified.
'3. n a dump car, the combination with two load supporting doors, of a common operating shaft, a pair of winding drums on said shaft, a pair of locking blocks on opposite sides of the shaft and connected with,
the doors so that the shaft is clamped between said locking blocks by the doors, substantially as specified. p
4. In a dump car, the combination with two doors, of a common operating shaft, and locking devices on opposite sides of the shaft connected to the doors, each of said locking devices having a locking face extending for its major portion past the center line of the shaft so that when in closed and locked position, the load of the door has no tendency to turn the shaft in the door releasing direction, substantially as specified.
