To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OWEN E. BOHANNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingman, in the county of Kingman and Stateof Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Colanders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawm s.

TM invention relates to improvements in culinary utensils and more particularly to colanders for straining fruits and vegetables.

The ob'ect of the invention is to improve and simpl ify the construction and operation of devices of this character and thereby render the same less expensive and more convenient and effective.

'With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved colander; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same; and Fig. 3 is a similar view taken in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 2.

My improved colander or strainer comprises a cylindrical cup-like body 1 having an 0 en bottom and an open top ada ted to be cl dsed by a cover or lid 2 which is iinged as at 3 to a rigid strip 4 secured upon the rear side of the body as shown. The edge of the cover 2 is formed with a depending flange or rim 5 and at its front is a hinged hasp or catch 6 adapted to engage a pivoted button or hook 7 arranged upon the front of the body 1. To enable the latter to be conveniently handled I provide the same at its rear with an upright handle 8 consistin of a hand grip of wood or the like arranged upon the central portion of a metal rod which is bent into U-shape and has the ends of its arms 9 suitably secured to the body.

Arranged within the body is a removable strainer or sieve consisting of a concave body portion 10 of woven wire fabric or other reticulate material and an annular rim 11 which surrounds the u per edge of the body portion and is of angu ar shape in cross sec tion so as to efiectively reinforce the strainer and also serve as a supporting means for it. The strainer is supported within the body 1 by having its angular rim 11 rest upon an annular shoulder 12 formed within said body 1 by crimping an annular bead in it at a suitable distance from its open bottom as will be readily seen upon reference to Figs. 2 and 3. The strainer is retained upon its supporting shoulder or bead 12 by a removable agitator or stirrer 13 consisting of two circular heads or collars 14, 15 united by curved or semi-circular wires 16 arranged at equal distances apart so as to form an open frame of spherical form. The collars or heads 14, 15 are arranged immediately above the rim of the strainer to hold it u on the shoulder 12 and they are formed wit alined apertures to receive a transverse shaft 17, the aperture in the head 15 being screw threaded as shown at 18. Said shaft 17 is adapted to roject through apertures formed in reinorced bearings 19 arranged at opposite points upon the body 1 and at one end of the shaft is formed a crank 20 provided with a handle 21 of wood or the like.

Fixed on the shaft 17 adjacent to its crank handle is a collar 22 which forms a shoulder adapted to engage one of the bearings 19 and limit the movement of the shaft in one direction, and at the opposite end of said shaft is formed a reduced screw threaded portion 23 adapted to have its threads engage the threads 18 in the collar or head 15 and adapted to form a shoulder 24 which engages the inner face of said head 15 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This construction it will be seen serves to unite the agitator or stirrer and the shaft so that when the latter is rotated the former will revolve with it to cause its bars or wires 16 to pass through the material upon the strainer and close to the latter. This construction also enables the shaft to be quickly removed so that the stirrer and the strainer may be removed from the body 1 to facilitate cleaning or to allow the strainer to be replaced by another one having its reticulate body portion of different mesh fabric.

By providing for each colander a plurality of sieves or strainers having their body portions of woven wire of different mesh it will be seen that the device may be adapted for a variety of uses.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the construction, uses and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without a further explanation.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

The herein described colander or strainer comprising a straight cylindrical body having open ends, an inwardly extending annu lar bead crirnped in the body intermediate its ends, bearings arranged at opposite points upon the body above said bead, a removable strainer in the body and having a supporting rim of angular shape in cross section, the outwardly projecting horizontal flange of said rim being adapted to rest upon the top of said bead whereby the strainer will be removably supported, a removable stirrer arranged in the body above the strainer and having apertured heads united by wire, the aperture in one head being screw threaded, a shaft extending through the body and the stirrer and having both of its ends rotatable in said bearings, one end of said shaft being provided with a crank handle and its other end having a reduced screw threaded por tion forming an annular shoulder, said screw threaded portion being adapted to enter the stirrer head having the screw threaded aperture and said shoulder being adapted to engage the inner face of the last mentioned head to cause the stirrer to rotate with the shaft, said heads of the stirrer being disposed immediately above the inwardly eX- tending flange of the annular rim of the strainer whereby said riin will be retained upon said bead, substantially as set forth.
