Description

J. FRITZ. SAW FILING IMPLEMENT. APPLIUATION FILED JUNE 27, 1908.

Elvmmntoi JOHN H. FRITZ, OF CALDWELL, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-FILING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed June 27, 1908. Serial No. 440,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. FRITZ, citizen of the United States, residing at Caldwell, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for filing saws, particularly circular saws, and has for its particular object to provide a support for the file adjustable in such manner that all parts of the saw tooth, and particularly the --under part or throat, may be readily got at and operated on with the file.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1, 2 and 3 are elevations of three sides of the device. Fig. i is a top plan view.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a standard at the foot of which is a fork 7 to fit over the saw arbor or collar on which the standard is supported, the flat side of the standard resting against the side of the saw. At its upper end the standard has thereon a sliding head 8 which may be adjusted up and down on the standard to fit saws of different diameters and which is fixed at adjustment by a wedgekey 9, as shown.
At one edge the head has a cheek 10, to which is pivoted, by bolt 11, a disk 12 which may be turned on the pivot bolt, or fastened at' any desired position by tightening the thumb nut on the bolt. A bracket arm 13 is pivotally attached to the disk 12, by a screw 14, near the outer edge of the disk, and said bracket may be swung up or down to allow the file to follow the curvature of the saw tooth. At its outer or free end the bracket arm carries a transverse guide bar 15 upon which is mounted a slide 16 provided at its front or far end with a knob handle 17. The file, indicated at 18, is mounted upon or against the outer side of the slide, at the lower edge thereof, and is held inposition by two clips marked 19 and 20, which may be tightened on the file by screws 21, taking into the slide. The handle 212(pf the file projects rearwardly beyond the s 1 e.
The device is held in place on the saw by means of a depending projection 23 which engages over the edge of the saw at the circumference thereof, on the side opposite the standard.
In use, the knob 17 is held in the left hand and the handle 22 in the other, and the file and slide are worked back and forth along the guide bar. The double pivot joint or connection afforded by the pivots 11 and 1 1 and the turning disk 12, allows all variation of the angle of the file and its holder necessary to reach all parts of the saw tooth. The pivot 14 is eccentric to the pivot 11 and accordingly when the disk is turned around the file holder is advanced or retracted with respect to the support, and also raised or lowered, and at the same time the arm 13 may be turned up or down on its pivot 14, allowing the exposed edge or face of the file to reach all parts of undercut or gullet teeth and particularly the under side of the point of the tooth; and the reciprocation of the slide and file will necessarily be at the same angle, transversely, in all positions, since the gulde on which the slide travels is rigid with the arm.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention and no limitation is implied by reason of the particular construction shown and described.
I claim:
1. A saw filing implement comprising a standard, a reciprocating file holder, and a support having a double pivotal connection to the standard, the pivots being eccentric with respect to each other, and the support having a guide on which the holder slides.
2. A saw filing implement comprising a support, an adjustable head thereon, a disk pivoted to the head, the pivot having means to clamp the disk to the head at any angle desired, an arm pivoted at one end to the disk, the said pivots being eccentric and the arm having a transverse guide bar at its outer end, and a file holder slidable on the guide bar.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. FRITZ.
