UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR W. MILLER AND LUTHER L. PAINTER, OF STRASBURG, VIRGINIA.
PACKAGE-BINDER.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
Application filed February 18, 1908. Serial No. 416,523.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR WV. MILLER and LUTHER L. PAINTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Strasburg, in thev county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Package-Binders, of which the ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to package binders, and more particularly to those adapted for use in tying packages of letters and the like, and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will be simple, inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily attached to or detached from a packa e. Y
gOther objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood thatchanges in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention showing its application to a package of letters, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a package binder 9 consisting of a metallic plate 10 having a tapered or reduced portion 11 formed by cutting away portions of two sides of the plate, as shown. Adjacent the side edges 12 and 13 res ectively, the plate is provided with longitu inally extending slots 14 arranged to facilitate handling of the plate when the binder is in use. The plate 10 is also provided with a passage 15 whereby said plate may be hung upon a suitable support when the same is not in use. The tapered portion 11 is provided with an inwardly directed slot 16 preferably of key hole form, and this slot opens outwardly on the side 12 as shown, and is adapted for wedging engagement with a knotted string 27, inwardly of the knot 26, to hold the string a ainst slipping.
The p ate is provided with aleaf spring 17 securely held to the plate by means of a button 18 having a reduced stem 19 at its lower end which 1s riveted to the plate 10 as shown at 20.*The2button 18 is headedas shown at 21, and beneath this headed portion, the button is contracted or reduced as shown at 22.
The leaf spring 17 is provided with an outwardly extending nose 23 having its underside adjacent its forward end spaced from the plate 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The nose 1s preferably closed at both sides as shown at 24, and the top of the button is preferably extended upwardly as shown at 25 and then downwardly as shown at 26.
In use, the plate 1() is disposed u )on one side of a package to be tied, and tie cord 27 is engaged in the slot 16 as described, then passed around the package in one direction and a portion of the cord looped around the button 18. It is afterwards passed around the package at right angles and again engaged with the button, and the free 'end of the cord is finally passed beneath the nose 23 for securely holding the same frictienally engaged with the plate 10.
W' hat is claimed is:
A package binder comprising a base plate having a tapered elongation, the larger portion of the plate being provided with a plurality of perforations, and having a resilient plate secured centrally thereof stamped from sheet material, said last named plate being provided with an upwardly turned nose portion having its side edges rounded, the nose being directed towards the tapered extension of the base plate, and a bindinff post having a reduced portion engage( through the resilient plate and through one of the perforations in the base plate and secured in riveted engagement thereto, said tapered portion of the base plate having a slot therein, opening on one of the side edges of the base plate, said slot having its inner portion directed outwardly of the binding member, and having its inner end spaced inwardly of the adjacent tapered end of the plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR YV. MILLER. LUTHER L. PAINTER.
