STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS G. JEWELL, OF REDDING, CALIFORNIA.
BASKET.
Application filed February 9, 1907.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, NionoLAs G. J EWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redding, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referduce a basket `of the kind described which will be light yet durable, also one which is simple of construction, and consequently easily manufactured. These and other objects I accomplish by means of an improved arrangement of the staves of the basket and means for binding the same; also by such other and further construction and arrangement of parts as will appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary view of the basket in perspective. Fig. 2 is a sectional view enlarged of a portion of the improved binding employed upon the basket.
Referring more particularly to said figures 1 represents the bottom of the basket formed on its outer edge with a substantially V- shaped encompassing groove 2, in which the lower ends of the staves 3, forming the sides of the basket, are held, and bound by means of a metal strip 4, the said strip 4 being secured in position by means of rivets 5 extending through said strip at the center of each stave 3, into the bottom 1.
The tops of the staves 3 are bound firmly in the following manner. A strip of metal 6 isformed continuously from the inside to the outside of said staves as shown.
Bearing over the upper ends of the staves is a binding element -formed from an inverted U-shaped strip of sheet metal 6 closely engaging the opposite upper sides of the staves, and secured in position thereon by crimping Specification of Letters atent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Serial No. 356,515.
two sets of V-shaped channels 9 in the inner side of the binder and corresponding V- shaped projections 7 upon the outer' side of the binder, the two sets of channels and projections coming opposite to each other and forming the material of the staves into similar channels and projections 8 as clearly shown in Fig.
In forming the material of the basket the stave 3 is forced by the action of producing beads or channels 9 into the grooves and channels S of the staves. The same are then bound in this position by means of rivets 10 inserted through the metal 6 between the two sets of channels and grooves 9 7, as shown in Fig. 2 and each stave 3 intermediate of each bead and groove. The said arrangement of binding the staves in said beads and grooves holds the said staves steady and prevents the same from warping o1' otherwise becoming misshapen. The rivets 1() hold all the parts bound firmly in the position described. Likewise the groove 2 and band et and rivets 5 hold the bottoms of the staves bound in conformity with the tops, thus making the construction of the basket uniform.
Another advantageous feature of my improved basket is that it has a stave formed at each corner, and with the staves at the sides with one of the spaces centrally thereof wherein a bail may be inserted without the necessity of making a hole in any portion of the basket. Said basket is square on all sides with rounded corners.
IVhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the basket, in practice deviations may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A basket comprising a bottom, staves connected at their lower ends to said bottom and having their inner faces provided with a pair of V-shaped crimps forming their outer faces with V-shaped projections and an inverted U-shaped binding element mounted upon the upper ends of said staves and engaging the outer and inner faces of said staves, the outer portion of said binding element provided with a pair of V-shaped crimps forming grooves on its inner face to receive the projections on the outer faces of l necting the binding element to the staves, 10 said staves, the inner portion of said binding i said rivets positioned between the crimps of element having its inner face formed With a, the binding element.
pair of V-sheped crirnps forming on the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature other face thereof V-shaped projections enin presence of tWo Witnesses.
gaging in the grooves on the inner faces of NICHOLAS G. JEWELL. said staves, the crimps in said binding e1e- Witnesses: ment being continuous, and rivets extending W. H. BERGH,
through said element and said staves for con- C. F. BROUILLARD.
