THOMAS WILLIS MCOREARY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO; SETH II. WILLIS ADMINISTRATOR OF SAID THOMAS WILLIS MCOREARY, DECEASED.
COPY HOLDER AND MARKER FOR TYIE-WRITEBS.
Application filed July 26, 1907.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownrthat I, THOMAS W. Mo- OREARY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy Holders and Markers for Type-Haters, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to copy holders and markers for use in connection with typewriting machines; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be supported on the table of a typewriting machine, or connected therewith, and by means of which the line of material to be copied may be indicated by means of a transversely arranged marker movable longitudinally of a sheet of manuscript or other material to be copied.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved copy holder and marker designed for use on the table of a typewriting ma chine or other support; Fig. 2 a side view thereof, and :Fig. 3 a partial section on the lines 3, 3 of Fig. 1 and on an enlarged scale and showing the device inverted.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a support comprising a base at having an upright tubular standard a in which is mounted a vertically adjustable member a one of said parts being adapted to be telescoped within the other and to be secured at any desired point of adjustment by a set screw a The copy holder and marker proper consists of a plate or board Z) which, in the form of construction shown, is pivotally connected with the standard or support as shown at a so as to swing in a vertical plane. In connection with the plate or board 6, I provide a clamp 0 which is known as the ordinary Spencerian clamp and consists of a tubular member 0 open at one side to form spring clamping jaws and provided with supplemental parallel projecting clamping jaws secured to the jaws formed by the tube and provided with backwardly and outwardly directed handle members c which pass through the tube 0 and by which the clamp is operated.
To one of the aws 0 I secure an elongated strip (Z which is preferably of the same length as the plate or board 6, and which is provided at its outer edge with a U-shaped member (5 which extends longitudinally thereof and at a right angle thereto, and which opens inwardly in the direction of the jaw 0 to which the strip (Z is secured, and the inner side of which is shorter than the outer side' as shown at (Z The marker proper consists of a metal strip 6 provided at one end with a right angled flange 6 which fits and is movable in the guide formed by the part (Z of the strip (Z, and the marker strip 6 is preferably provided adjacent to the guide 6 with a thumb and finger piece 6 by means of which it may be moved longitudinally of the guide 6 and also longitudinally of a sheet of manuscript or other material to be copied when the latter is placed on said plate or board.
In practice, the clamp 0 with the guide piece 6 connected therewith and the marker strip 6 may be detached from the plate or board Z) or connected therewith whenever desired, and it will be understood that this device may be used in writing out shorthand notes or copying any manuscript or other matter, said notes, or manuscript, or other matter, being placed on the plate or board I) and the clamp a connected with the left hand edge thereof in which position of said clamp the marker strip 6 will be freely movable longitudinally of the plate or board I) and also longitudinally of the copy, or manuscript, or other material placed on said plate or board, and in Fig. l of the drawing, the marker strip 6 is shown in full lines in one position and in dotted lines in two other positions.
Although, I have shown the copy holder proper connected with an upright standard adapted to be placed on the table of a typewriting machine or other support, it will be apparent that the said copy holder may be connected with the table of a typewriting machine or with any other support in any desired way.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A copy holder and marker consisting of a plate or board, and a clamp adapted to be connected with one side edge thereof, said clamp being provided with two spring jaws to one of which is secured an oblong U- shaped guide member and a marker strip provided at one end with a flange adapted to be inserted into said guide member and movable therein.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a plate or board, and a clamp adapted to be secured to one side thereof, said clamp being provided with two jaws to one of which is secured a U-shaped guide member which ranges longitudinally of the plate or board when the clamp is secured thereto and which opens in the direction of said plate or board, and a marker which ranges transversely of said plate or board and is movable longitudinally thereof and provided at one end with an angular flange adapted to be inserted into said guide member and movable therein.
3. In a device of the class described, a clamp provided with two spring jaws to one of which is secured an oblong U-shaped guide member and a marker or indicator provided at one end with a flange adapted to be inserted into said guide member and movable therein.
t. In a device of the class described, a spring clamp one of the jaws of which is provided with an oblong guide member and a marker or indicator stripprovided at one end with a flange adapted to be inserted into said guide member and movable therein.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 25th day of May 1907.
THOMAS WILLIS MGCREARY.
