ANTHONY Z1N,K,OF LANCASTER, OHIO.
4Lette-rs .Patent` No. 91,196, dated June 8, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT PROPELLING-APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these- Letters Patent and making part of lthe same.
To all 'whoml it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY ZINK, of' Lancaster city, county of Fairfield, andState o'f Ohio, have invented a new and useful Endless-Chain Propeller for Steamships and Boats and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, referencev being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereonmaking a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1`represents a longitudinal sectional elevation ofthe propeller. v
' Figure 2, a top view of the one-half of the propeller. v
Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a paddle and part of the endless chain, to show how they are con` nected. v
A is a framework, to support the revolving cylinders B, that carry the endless'chain C, with its upright arms D, axles E, and adjustable paddles G.
The frame-work A is intended to be permanently built on each side of a vessel.
The journals ofthe revolving cylinders BvB operate in the sides ofthe frame or guards A, one of the cylinders B operating in boxes H H, that have slots,
with screws J J in their centre, so that the cylinderV B may be shifted back or forward, to tighten the endless chain, or slacken it, when required;4
On each side of the cylinders B B are scalloped wheels K K, in which thel joints of thelinks of the chain C fall, and are carried half around each wheel, giving the chain a continuous motion.
` The links U are nntted and bolted together at their ends, so as to be easily repaired, and another replaced when one of the links becomes worn or broken.
The upright arms D are also intended (see g. 3) to' be fastened to each link C by bolts and nuts, so that when one of the arms breaks, another can be quickly attached. l
These arms D serve` to brace each side and end of the paddle Gr, and strengthen it when moving on a line; but as the arms pass laround the scallopedwheel K, the paddle continues resting upon the lower arm that opens with the angle of the link G, and again closes upon the, paddle (as the paddle strikes the water) in unison with the next arm, both arms D D again unit ling to strengthen -the paddle G.
The paddles G are attached to braces L L by screwbolts and nuts, so as to be adjusted for shallow or deep water, the braces being pivoted to the axles E, so that the paddles can move to and fro with the opening and closing of the arms D D; and in case a paddle breaks, it` can be easily replaced by a new one.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable arms D D, that protect the paddle on each side, as herein described, and for the purposes setforth.
` A. ZINK.
