To all whom "it m concern: i j
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. Comm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented anew anduseful Improvement in Water-Closet Specification oi Letters i a tent.
Application filedFebruary 2%, 1906. Serial Ho, 302,710.
Seats,'of which improvement the following 1s-a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in seats for water closets.
The ob ect of my lnventlon is to produce a seat in which the maximum '01: sanitary etiicienciy is attained and by the use of which the danger of infection by personal contact at the-front and rear thereof is avoided or minimized.
A furtherobject of my invention is to provide water closet seats with hinge connections so constructed that the seats can'be adjusted to bowls without altering or changing the holes in the rear wall thereof in which the brackets are secured and to which the seat is pivotally connected.
1. accomplish these objects by means of the had to the accompanying drawings, forming part here f, in wh1ch device hereinafter described, reference being Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved water closet seat. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, taken on line a r-ac of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail of the combined counecting bar and hinge shank or shaft.
Referring to said drawings, 1 is the bowl of the closet, which is of the usualconstruction, upon which the seat, 2, is adapted to be mounted. The said seat comprises two sections, A B, which are conjoined at the front and rear by the connecting pieces 3- i. The said connecting piece 4 extends across the rear end of the sections, A-B, and is substantially L-shaped in cross section. the
vertically disposed portion of which has its ends secured to the edgesof the rear ends of the sections A-B. posed portion thereof is shorter than the vertically disposed portion and theends thereof terminate iii-oppositely extending shanks or shafts 5 5 on-which the sectional seat is adapted to swing when mounted in eyes 6 6, formed in the brackets 7'7. Moreover, in order that the rear connecting piece 4. shall not operate to-close the rear end of the opening between the sections A and B the central portion of said piece is bowed outwardly, as at t. The cover, 8, is provided with hinges 9, which are likelhe horizontally dis Patented Feb. 9, 1809.
'wise pivotally mounted on said ,snanks or shafts The cover, 8, is mounted on the shanks or shafts, 5, either on the outer ends thereof, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings,
or ifit happens that the brackets are more ings relatively to the distance between the 'idely separated than as shown in the drawhinges on the cover, the relative positions of V said hinges and the brackets may be changed on the shanks or shafts, 5, to enable the seat "to beapplied to the bowl without changing he pesition'of thebrackets 7.
it. will be noted that the front portions of sections A.B project over and beyond the outer edge of the bowl, and that said sections are con oined together at the outer front ends thereof by a narrow metal piece 3. The connecting piece 3 has its ends flattened,
at 3", and suitably fastened tothe underside of the forward ends of the seat sections A and B, and said connecting piece also serves as a handle for conveniently raising and lowering the seat. By projecting the front ends of the sections A and B beyond the edge of the bowl the connecting piece 3 is positioned to be readily grasped when the seat is lowered. The said sections AB are preferably shaped as shown in the accompanying drawings, and when assembled form a seat having an uninterrupted opening from end to end which is contracted at" the front and rear ends into narrow channels or slits, (1-D, whereby 'a person 06- cupying the seat is protected against personal contact with the seat at such points. The sanitary advantages of this construction are obvious without further amplification.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A'water closet seat, comprising two-secing pivotal points upon which the' seat swings when positioned upon a bowl.
'- ing pivotal 1 points sw ngs when positioned upon a bowl. I
.2; A Water closet seatfcoinprising two sections separated from each other throughout their length to provide an uninterrupted opening therebetween, and connectmg pieces arranged at the forward and rear ends of fsaid sections to retain the latter in separated relation, the forward connecting piece havbeing; substantially L-shaped in cross SCCtlOl] andhavlng the endsof its vertical portion connected to the-edges of the rear ends of Tthefseat sections, the horizontal portion of said rear connecting piece being of less length than the verticalportion and having oppositely-extending s inks at its ends fornion which the seat 3.; A water closet seat, comprising two seet1ons separated frorn'each other throughout their length to provide an uninterrupted ooenin therebetween and eonnectin )iecesarranged at the forward and rear ends of said seet-lon's'to reta n the latter 1n separated relation, the forward connecting piece constituting a handle for raising andlowering the seat when positioned upon a bowl, the
rear connecting piece being substantially L- shaped in cross section and having its central port on bowed outwardly to remove said portion from the opening between the seat sections, the ends of the vertical portion being'connected to the rear ends of the seat sections, the horizontal portion of said real connecting piece having oppositely-extending shanks at its ends forming pivotal points upon which the seat swings when positioned upon a bowl:
4. A water closet seat, co1nprising two sections separated from each other throughout their length to provide an uninterrupted opening therebetween, and connecting pieces arranged at the forward and rear ends of iid ions to retain the latter in separatml relation, the forward connecting piece having its ends attached to the under side of the sections and constituting a handle for raising and lowering the seat when positioned upon a bowl, the rear connecting piece being substantially L-shaped in cross-section and ha ring its central portion bowed outwardly to remove said port ion from the opening between the seat sections, the ends of the vertical portion being-connected to the rear ends of the seat sections, the horizontal portion of said rear connecting piece being of less length than the vertical portion and having op positely-extending shanks at its ends forming pivotal points upon which the seat swings when positioned upon a bowl.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
