ALFRED WIL'KIN, OF LUCAS COUNTY, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 91,190, dated June 8, 1869.
FIRE-PLACE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it and/y concern ,Be it known that I, ALFRED WILKIN, of Lucascounty, in the State of Ohio, have'invented a new and improved Smoke -'Burning Radiator, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact-description; reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which' Figure 1 is a front view of the radiator. Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line x-x. The object of myi'nvention is to provide a cheap burner, which will consume the smoke, prevent wastage, and throw out increased heat from a perfect com .bustion of the gases- In addition to this, my burner is so arranged, as to increase the draught of the flnes', as well as to furnish face, or front to the fireinch thick'on the lower edge, and about one-fourth of an'inch thick at the top.
This plate is cast with projections q q, by which it is secured in the brick-work, and with a series ,of holes,
or openings, .H H, ranging nearly on a level with the top'of the grate B, and another row of. these openings, 0 0, above the curve G, and near the flange of the plate D, on which rest the bricks a a, which complete the throat of the flue.
The plate D is set about three inches in front of the brick back to the fire-place, of ordinary construction,
and is provided with hooks, or lugs M M, on which is rested the rear of the grate B.
By this construction, a free passage of oxygen, or
air, is admitted over the ash-box, and under the plate D, at the point K; or the air may be admitted from thecellar of the room, or from the outside of the building, as may best suit the convenience or judgment of the builder. It is evident, the air behind the plate D, and between it and the brick back of the fire-place, will become heated, and will be forced, by expansion, through the perforations H H, where, coming in contact with the heated carbon, it will immediately ignite The curve G, at the upper part of the plate D, is for the purpose of thoroughly incorporating the oxygen and carbon, and, by the introduction, again, of more heated air through the perforations O'G, securing a perfect combustion of the escaping gases.
This arrangement increases the draught of the fines, as well as furnishes more heat from the same amount of fuel, than any other grate known.
By the admission of air, in the manner described, in connection with the form of the plate D, is furnished a powerful radiator, far surpassing any now in use, and one which can be put in old fines, or built in new, with but little inconvenience, and at a trifling cost.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The plate D, with its curve Grand perforations H H and O O, in combination with the grate B, and when constructed with reference to the back of an ordinary fire-place, substantially as and for the purpose described.
. ALFRED WILKIN.
