.IGI-IN L. TUCKER, OF LACONIA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
t Letters Patent No. 91,184, dated .Tune 8, 1869'.
IMPRovEMENT IN Doon-spuma The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN L. TUCKER, of Laconia, in the county of Belknap, and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improved Door-Spring; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication- Figure 1 being a side view of the device, as applied to a door. A
Figure 2, a, plan, or top view of the same.
Figure 3, a section of the bracket, and top view of the spring proper, detachedfrom the other parts of the device.
Like letters. designate corresponding parts in all the -igures Let A, in the drawings, representa door, and B, the frame, to which it is hinged. The spring proper, c, is mounted in a cast bracket, G.
This bracket is securely attached to the door-frame, as represented, and has projecting ears a a, serving as bearings for the holt b, to which the inner end of the spring c is attached,`it being situated between the said ears.
The bolt b is provided with a ratchet-wheel, d, into which engages a spring -fdetent, e, secured to the bracket.
The upper end of the said bolt has a square or angular prejecton, for the reception of a wrench, or key, to turn the bolt with.
By turning the said bolttrhe power of the spring I may be .regulated to the required degree, and the detent, catching in the teeth of the ratchet, holds it in place. j
The spring proper may be made, by attening the end of a steel rod, or wire,A C, and ceiling the elastic attened portion around the holt b, to which its inner end is attached.
The round portion of the rod O projects forward, for purposes to be hereafter described.
I prefer the above-described manner of forming the spring, but it may be otherwiseinade.
The most important feature of my invention, is the stop for holding the door open in any desired position.
This device, as represented, consists of a plate, H, secured horizontally across the door, with a projecting ledge, h, provided with a long slot, o, through which the spring rod C extends, it being bent upward for that purpose.
The end of the rod traverses this slot, when the door is swung, the said slot being of sniiicient length to permit the door to open to the full extent.
The bent termination of the springsrod O, is provided with a friction-roller, I), which traverses the plate H, under the ledge h,- and that portion `of the rod which projects above the ledge, is provided with a screw-thread, fr the reception of the nut E.
As the door is opened, the end of the rod bearing the nut and roller, commences to traverse the slot, as
indicated in red lines in fig. 2; and the door may be` held open at any desired angle, by screwing down the nut, this operation binding the ledge h between the roller and nut, thus preventing the door from closing.
When the nut is unscrewed, the door is again free to swing, and the force of the spring operates to close it.
'lhe construction of the parts of this adjustable doorstop may vary from that described, provided its equivalent is retained.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable door-stop, for holding the door open in any desired position, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
The above specification of my improved door-spring signed by me, this 24th day of August, 1868.
J. L. TUCKER.
