Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS M. McKEr ZIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adamsville, in the county of McNairy and State of Tennessee, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Wire- Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire stretchers and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein a pivoted lever is employed, said lever being provided with means whereby a plurality of wires of a fence may be stretched at the one operation.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel'd evice of this character wherein one of the strands of a splice may be held, while the second strand is being stretched.

Itis also an object of the invention to rovide a novel device of this character w 'ch will be simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accom anying drawings forming part of this speci cation wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,

In the drawings 1 denotes two parallel bars of suitable material, having interposed therebetween at one side and secured thereto the base ofan anchoring hook 2 which is adapted to be engaged by the chain 3, or other retaining member intended to embrace Intermediate the length of the bars 1 approximately centrally thereof and positioned therebetween, is pivoted an operating lever 5. The ivotal point of this lever 5 is intermediate its length, and the portion thereof above the bars 1 terminates in'a hand grasp 6, While the lower end terminates in the bi furcated portion 7, said bifurcation extendcation can ing at approximately right angles to the bar 5 proper. This arrangement of the bifurbe obtained in any way, but it is preferred that the bar 5 be twisted as shown in the drawings, it being also stated that the bar 5 is preferably formed of metal. The bifurcation is approximately V-shaped so that it will be caused to bind or bite a strand of wire 8 inserted therein. At a point slightly above the bifurcated portion 7 the lever 5 has fixed thereto a wire clamp, comprising a stationary member 9 and a pivoted eccentric member 10 which will effectually hold a second Wire strand 11. It is thought that from the foregoing it will be apparent that when a pull is made on the hand grasp 6 the lever 5 will effectually stretch both of the strands 8 and 11. After the limit of pull on the lever 5 has been obtained, and in order that it may be effectually held against return, said lever 5 has pivoted thereto above the bars 1 a rod 12 terminating in a hook member 13 which is insertible within the openings 14 in one of the bars 1. In order that the various necess1t1es or requirements of practice may be fully met the lever 5 is provided with a plurality of openings 15 in order that the pivotal connection of the rod 12 may be varied.

Should the stretching of a wire be adjacent a splicing the bars 1 are rovided with a depending bracket 16, whic has secured thereto an auxiliary clamp 17 which is adapted to engage and hold the second strand of a splice.

I claim:

A wire stretcher comprising two parallel bars, one of said bars being provided with a series of openings, a lever passing between the bars and pivoted thereto, said lever being provided above its pivot with a plurality of openings, a rod passing at one end through one of the openings of the lever adapted to engage the opening of the bar, one end of said lever being provided with a bifurcation, a clamp carried by the lever above the bifurcation, a bracket depending from one end of the bars, a wire clamp carried by the bracket and an anchoring hook carried by the bars.
