NTE S' SAMUEL JOSEPH HARTNELL, OF OSWEGO, OREGON.
TOY BASKE TBALL DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 11, 1908.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
Serial No. 462,049.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l", SAMUEL J. HARTNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oswego, in the county of Clackamas and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Toy Basket-Ball Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The 1purpose of my invention is to provide a nove simple device which in use partakes of the character of the basket ball game, and is particularly well adapted for the amusement of youn` persons; the successful manipulation of t e toy rec uiring dexterity and skill, training the han and eye, aording agreeable exercise, and also amusement to the layers and those interested in the game.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing and characters of reference thereon, the view shown being a perspective illustration of the improved toy.
An elongated block A constitutes the main portion or body of the device, and as repre sented, is longitudinally and deeply channeled on the normally upper side thereof, said channel a, terminating at points a near each end of the body A. At one end a hanolle B is formed or secured on the body A, affording means for the convenient manipulation of the complete toy.
At opposite points, preferably near the longitudinal center of the body A, two standards C, C, are secured thereon by their lower ends and extend vertically, having an e ual length and other dimensions that are simi ar. Between the standards O a gate D is pivoted, the pivots that are disposed oppositely near the upper edge of the gate, as shown for one ivot at b, permitting the gate to hang loosely between the standards and in the channel a.
A basket or like receptacle E, that is preferably hemispherical in shape, is secured by the edge of its open to between the u per ends of the standards There is a sp erical ball F provided as a completing detail of the device, and the method of operating the toy involves the transfer of the ball past the gate D and from the channel a, into the basket E.
The operator in preparing the device for a test of skill, grasps the handle B and places the ball F in the channel a at a point near the handle. In order to give the ball the necessary impetus, the body A is tipped first toward the outer end, so as to roll the ball past the gate D, and then said ball is returned by reversely inclining the body. When it is thought the ball has received proper end'wise movement toward the outer extremity of the body A, a dexterous movement of the latter upward at said outer end will toss the ball from the channel a upward and into the basket.
It will he noted that the operator must time the movement of the ball and force of impact it has upon the gate D, so that it will arrive at the outer end of the channel a and be thence thrown upward by a combined inclining and tossing movement, that requires good judgment, a trained eye and dexterous mainpulation for the successful playing of the game of toss and catch with the improved toy basket ball device.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A toy, embodying an elongated body having a longitudinal channel therein, a pair of standards, a gate pendent between the standards, and a receptacle on the standards.
2. A toy, embodying an elongated body having a longitudinal channel therein formed in the normally upper side, two standards erected oppositely on the body in parallel planes, a hemispherical basket secured between the standards at their upper ends, and a gate pivoted between the standards and depending into the channel.
3. A toy, embodying an elongated body having a longitudinal channel in its upper side extending nearly the length of said body, two standards of an equal height secured oppositely on the sides of the body near the center thereof, a flat gate pivoted near its upper edge between the standards and depending into the channel, a hemispherieal basket secured between the standards at their upper ends, and a spherical ball Inovable in said channel.
4. A toy, embodying a channeled body, standards thereon, a gate pendent and rockable between the standards, a basket secured between the upper ends of the standards,
10 and a ball that is rolled in the channel,
passes the gate, and is tossed into the basket by the manipulation of the body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL JOSEPH HARTNELL.
