UNITED STATES PATENT ALBERTIS B. SMITH, OF BINGI-IAMTON, NEW YORK.
CIGAR-B OX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBnR'rIs B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cigar boxes, in which a metallic case or cabinet is used containing within it adjustable wooden partitions and linings for the purpose of conforming the interior readily to the shape, size and form of a compact mass of cigars or packages of cigars contained therein.
The objects of my improvement are to utilize an ordinary class or style of metal boxes such as are commonly used for various purposes in trade, domestic and public, and useful in various ways for domestic purposes when used as a box alone and to adapt to such receptacle an adjustable interior within it so as to use it as a perfect container for cigars and at the same time not destroying its usefulness when the cigars are used and removed therefrom so as to enable it to be again used in any trade or for any various purpose. I attain these objects by the mechanism in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box showing the application of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached perspective views of the component parts of my invention. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of my invention. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detached perspective views of the component parts of my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I have in my device a metallic box A having the hinged cover B and in the front side of the box the lock 0. This box portion is preferably constructed of metal and may be such a metal box as is usually found made in large quantities for general commercial or domestic purposes and in regular trade-sizes or the box may be constructed of any other substantial, light and rigid material which may be adapted for use in my invention. Within this metal box A I place on one side the removable lining E, being a. strip of wood or other rigid material and having let Specification of Letters Patent.

into it the slots 1 and 2. This strip is so fitted that it forms a complete vertical smooth lining surface in front of the lock and coming substantially to the upper edge of the box front. For the purpose of forming a smooth adjustable end lining, I have the strip F made preferably of wood, but also it may be made of other light and rigid material. Into this I let the corresponding slots 3 and so positioned therein as to meet the slots 1 and 2 in the lining or side E. Thus I interlock together in varied adjustable positions into a locked union, the two strips, one at right angles with the other. To further preserve this perfect angular arrangement between the two strips and to prevent wearing of strip F, I attach to .it the projection or toe G which holds it in a separate position but at the same angle, from the end of the box. I thus preserve the rectangular form of the inner adjustable compartment of the box.
The slots 1, 2 and 3 admit of the strip F being fastened and locked at several different points along the line of strip E, and thus by this means the inner compartment can be narrowed to meet the exact form and size of the packages of cigars to be contained in the box from time to time.
I preferably form the adjustable interior of a wooden lining and by this means the metal box can hold in compact form, various sizes of packages of cigars and at the same time it enables this adjustable lining to be readily removed when the cigars are used up, and the box may be again used for other purposes and therefore gives to the box an added commercial value.
In a modified form of my invention I have at the rear of the box a narrow strip H, shown in Fig. 5, ext-ending from end to end upon the floor of the box, either in a corner formed by the side and floor or at any point between the two sides, as may be desired. Within it the notches 4, 5, 6, 7
and 8 placed in the upper edge of the said narrow strip I-I, resting vertically in the corner of the box or horizontally when lying upon the bottom of the box, the end lining F having the toe G as shown in Fig. 6. These notches correspond in position, with the notches in the edge of the front lining E of the box as shown in Fig. 7 And thus it is possible to remove the adjustable end lining F with its toe G as shown in Fig. 6 from point to point along the sides and thus narrow the interior compartment down to any size to fit the commodity to be contained therein.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and for which I desire Let ters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a receptacle, a removable side all, a removable end wall interlocking with the side wall, and a toe carried by the end. *all projecting therefrom at right angles. 7
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a receptacle, a removable side wall, a removable end wall interlocking with the side wall, and a toe carried by the end wall projecting therefrom at right an gles adjacent one end thereof. 7
In a device of the character described, the combination of a receptacle, a removable side wall, a removable end wall interlocking with the side wall, a toe carried by the end wall projecting therefrom at right angles adjacent one end thereof, and a strip Within the box to interlock with the end portion of the end wall having the toe, said toe extending transversely of the end Wall.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERTIS BSMITH.
