This invention relates to improvements in carriageretarding apparatus for typewriting machinesandit consistsof the featuresof construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter described'and specified in the claims.

Although the drawingsillustrate the inventionapplied 'to a Monarch machine, it is tobe understood that itis also applicable to numerous other machines including such as are called under-stroke machines, as well as visible-writing machines.

of a base 1 and four posts2, only three of which are shown, and the top plate 3. On the back part of the top plate are two standards4, which are fastened to the top plate, and to which u per and lower guide rails 5 and 6 are attached by screws 7, these guide rails having in them grooves 8 and 9 extending throughout the length of the rails. The carriage 10, in which is mounted a platen 11,
has formed on it grooved guides 12 and 13 which extend from end to end of the carriage, the grooves 14 and 15 of these guidesv forming with the grooves 8 and 9 of the rails 5 and 6 ball or roller channels in which are shown anti friction balls 16 and 17. carriage is thus supported by the rails 5 and 6 and is movable on the balls in opposite directions over the top plate 3. The guides 12 and 13 are connected together by webs 18, and between these guides extend arms 19 which are pivoted to the ends of the carriage and to whose rear ends are fixed the carriage rack 20, which is movable up and down on the pivots 21 of the arms 19. Springs 22, acting on the arms of the rack, tend to keep the rack in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, that being its normal position.
The rack 20 normally engages a pinion 23, which is fast on a shaft having a bearing in a bracket 24 afiixed to the top plate 3, and on the rear end of this shaft is an escapemente wheel 25, arranged to co-act with the feed dogs 26 and 27, which are mounted on a dog rocker 28 whose rock shaft 29 is pivoted at its ends between lugs on the bracket 30 affixed to and extending downward from the top plate 3. On the rock shaft 29 is a spring 31 which tends to keep the stepping dog 27 in engagement with a tooth of the escapement-wheel 25. rocker, extends in front of the rock shaft 29, and to the front end of this arm is secured a link 33 which extends downward therefrom to the universal bar of the machine. henever the universal bar is actuated by depressing a character-key or a space-key, the front end of the arm 32 is drawn downward by the link 33, the stepping dog 27 is swung forward free from the escapement-wheel, and the holding dog 26 is moved into engagement with the escapement-wheel, and Whenthe The An arm 32, fast on the dog vances a letter space distance. But if desired a reverse feed escapement may be used instead of that above described.
To the standards 4 are rigidly attached rearwardly extending arms 34, in which a sto bar 35 is journaled at its ends. On the rig t end of this stop bar, outside of the adjacent arm 34, is a crank arm 36 which normally extends both forward and upward from the stop bar, and to which is pivoted at its front end a rod or link 37, which extends downward to the crank arm through the top plate and into the base 1 of the machine. A collar 38, having on it a projection 39, is fastened by a screw 40 to the rod 37, and on the rod 37, between the collar 38 and the part 41 of the base, is a coiled spring 42 which presses upward against the collar, and on the rod 37 above the top plate 3 is a collar 43 which is fast on the rod. The stop bar 35 has cut in it on opposite sides slots or recesses 44 at letter space distances apart, and on this bar are tabulator-stops 45 which fit in these recesses and which are adjustable on the bar, each ULbUlZLtOPSfJOP being formed to engage a recess at the back of the bar and another at the front of the bar. Each tabulator-stop has a lug 46 which extends forward and upward to the body of the stop, secured to the stop bar, when the bar is in its normal position (Fig. 2), in which it is ordinarily held by the upward pressure of the spring 42 against the collar 38 on the rod 37. A stop 47, which is rigidly attached to the back of the carriage 10 about midway between the ends of the carriage, extends backward nearly to the stop bar 35, its rear end being out of alinement with the lugs 46 of the tabulator stops when the stop bar is in its normal osition, and then being movable by the carriage past the stops 45 and underthe lugs 46.
The rod 37 is ivoted at its lower end to a lever 48 whose ulcrum is a screw 49 passed through its front end and into a boss 50 formed on the frame of the machine. On this lever is an upwardly extending ear 51 in which is a slot 52. A key lever 53, having on it a tabulator-key 54, is pivoted at its rear end by a screw 55 to a lug 56 formed on the underside of the roof 41 of the base and extending downward therefrom, there being behind this lug a coiled-spring 57 bearing against the key lever and the part 41 of the base and tending to keep the key lever in its normal position in contact with a pad 58 near its front end. A pin 59, fixed in the key lever 53, extends through the slot 52 in the ear 51 of the lever 48. The construction is such that when the key 54 is depressed the rear end of the lever 48 is forced downward and the link 37 rocks the stop bar 35, bringing the lugs 46 of the tabulator stops into the path of the stop 47.
A lever having arms 60-61 is pivoted by a shouldered screw 62 to a lug 63 on the underside of the top plate 3, and on the screw 62 is a coiled spring 64 which bears at one of its ends against the lug 63 and at its other end against the lower edge of the arm 60 of the lever, this arm of the lever extending in front of the rod 37 and under the projection 39 of the collar 38, and having on its upper edge a stop 65 which makes contact with the underside of the top plate when the lever is in its normal osition, where the spring 64 tends to keep it. A lever substantially the same as this has been used in the Monarch machine to actuate a rack lifting device, operative to raise the carriage rack out of engagement with the escapement pinion, and thus release the carriage from the control of the escapement. Since, however, a part of the carriage-retarding mechanism herein shown is operative through the lever 6061 to lift the carriage rack from the pinion 23, the particular lifting device heretofore employed is not necessary in a machine provided with this carriage-retarding apparatus.
.T he retarding apparatus proper com rises a case containin a mass of articles of solid matter, preferab y small chi led shot, and a rotary device contained in the case and arranged to be rotated by the carriage and to act on the mass of matter within the case. The retarding apparatus is preferably constructed and arranged as it is shown herein, although it is apparent that a modification thereof might be adopted. The case, 66, is a hollow cylinder closed at one end by a head 67 and at the other end by a screw or plug 68, which fits in and extends across the case and forms the other head of the case. On this screw is a notched disk or flange 69, and on the exterior of the case is a detent in the form of a spring 7 O, which is fastened to the case by screws 71 and which engages with the notched disk 69, fitting in the notches of the disk as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 and preventing the head or plug 68 from turning. This case is attached by its head 67 to a barrel 72, having on it shoulders or bosses 73 which fit between upright osts of a bracket 74, and the barrel 72 is pivoted on a horizontal axis to these posts 75 by shouldered screws 76 which extend through the posts into the bosses 73. On the front end of the base of this bracket 74 are lugs 77 which extend upward behind the guide rail 6, and this bracket is attached to the top plate of the machine by a screw 78, the lugs 77 being in contact with. the rear face of the guide rail 6. On the front side and near the right end of the barrel 72 is a curved arm 79 on which is formed a tubular bearing 80, the barrel 72, arm 79 and the bearing 80 being made in one piece which may be a casting or a drop-forging. The barrel 72 contains a shaft 81 which extends through it from end to end. On the right end of this shaft is a gear 82 which is r the fast thereon and whose hub is in contact with the right end of the barrel. A shaft 83 extends through the tubular bearing 80 and on the rear end of this shaft, which is horizontal, is a beveled gear 84 which engages with the gear'82, and on the front end of the shaft 83 is'a pinion 85, similar to the pinion 23. The rotary device comprises a hub 86 which is fixed on-the shaft 81 within the case 66 and from which extend arms 87 which are fast on the hub 86. These arms are preferably round and arranged in pairs at different dis tances from either end of the hub, the arms extending radially from the hub, as appears by Figs. 6 and 8. A massof small shot 88is represented inside of the case.
A lifting device 89 extends through the top plate 3 and is ivoted at its lower end to the arm 61 of the ever 6061. In the up per part of this lifting device is a slot 90 through which extends the shaft of the pinion 23, the edges-0f the slot 90 being close to the shaft and the lifting device extending between the pinion 23 and the front end of the bracket 24. At the left of the slot 90 is an arm 91 forming part of the lifting device, and in this arm is a slot 92 through whichthe shaft 83 passes, the arm 91 extending between the pinion 85 and the front end of the tubular bearing 80. In the base of the bracket 74 is a notch 93, and to the under side of the barrel 72 a spring 94 is attached bya-screw 95. This spring extends into the notch 93 and bearsagainst the base of the bracket, tending to hold the barrel 72 and parts mounted thereon in the positions in which they are shown in Fig. 1, the pinion 85 then being directly under and out of engagement with the rack 20.
The machine contains a spring drum 96 which isconnected by a strap 97 with. a stud 98*affxed to the carriage, so that when the escapement is-actuated or the carriage rack is raised out of engagement with the pinion 23, the carriage will be drawn toward the left by the action on it of the spring drum and strap.
The mass of shot 88 within the case 66 should be slightly compressed so that the shot will afford the desired resistance to the rotary device. The shot may be so compressed by turning the head or screw plug 68. This plug may be turned with the fingers when the spring detent has been forced out of engagement with the notched disk or flange 69 of the screw plug.
When the tabulator key 54 is depressed the stop bar 35 is turned on its axis by the action of the lever 53 on the lever 58, and of the latter lever and the rod 37 on the crank arm 36, the lugs 46 on thetabulator stops 45 be ing moved downward into the path of the stop 47 on the carriage. At the same time the projection 39 on the collar 38, fixed to the rod 37, forces downward the arm 60 of the ever 6061, and the lifting device 89 is raised by the arm 61 of this lever, so that the barral 7 2 and the parts mounted thereon are turned on the pivotal axis of the barrel to the positions in which they are shown in Fig. 5. The carriage rack 20 then engages the pinion 85, and is out of engagement with the escapement pinion 23, from which it has been raised by the action of the other pinion on the rack. The rod 37 is drawn downward until the collar 43 meets the top plate 3, and while this collar is held by pressure on the tabulator key in contact with the top plate, the lugs 46 on the stops 45 are kept in the path of the stop 47, and the barrel 72 and the parts mounted thereon and the carriage rack are kept in the positions shown in Fig. 5. As soon as the rack 20 is thus disengaged from the escapement pinion the carriage is drawn toward the left by the spring drum 96, and the pinion 85, shaft 83, beveled gears 84 and 82, shaft 81 and the rotary device contained in the case 66 are turned together by the action of the rack on the pinion 85. The carriage continues to travel and to so actuate the rotary device until the stop 47 meets the lug 46 on one of the tabulator stops 45. Then the tabulator key is released, whereupon the key and stop bar are restored to their normal positions by the springs 57 and 42, and as the collar 38 on the rod 37 rises, the springs 64 and 94 restore the lever 6061, the lifting device 89, and the barrel 72 with the parts mounted thereon to their normal positions, the pinion 85 being drawn downward to the position shown in Fig. 1, and the carriage rack cescends to the escapement pinion 23 with which it reengages just before the tabulatorstop leaves the stop 47.
When the rotary device 86-87 is actuated as described the arms 87 are forced through the mass of shot within the case 66, portions of the mass being displaced by each arm as the device rotates, and the re-action of the shot on the rotary device tends to reduce the speed of the carriage. The effect of this reaction may be increased or diminished by adjusting the head 68 of the case so as to subject the mass of shot to greater or less pres sure.
Obviously other matter might be substituted for the shot shown herein, but the best result has been obtained when a mass of very small chilled shot has been used.
By means of the apparatus described the carriage may be retarded, whatever distance it may travel free from the control of the escapement mechanism, as to prevent the machine from being damaged and to render the shock and noise slight when the carriage is arrested by tabulator stops or other similar devices. This retarding apparatus is so con structed and its parts are so arranged, it will be seen, that none of its parts extends as far backward as does the top plate 3 of the machine, so that the apparatus is out of the way and located where it is not in much danger of being damaged.
To adapt the apparatus for use on a machine having a long carriage it is merely nec essary to substitute for the beveled gear 84 a larger gear, and for the beveled gear 82 a smaller gear, so as to cause the rotary device to turn at a higher speed when it is actuated by the carriage. All the parts of the appa ratus, therefore, with the exception of the beveled gears are applicable to machines having long carriages as well as those having short carriages.
It is to be understood that the invention may be applied to machines containing denominational or decimal tabulating mechanism, instead of the particular tabulating mechanism shown herein, or other forms of column selecting mechanism.
Certain combinations disclosed in this application are claimed broadly in my earlier application Serial No. 310,374, filed April 6, 1906, all the claims of this application being limited to combinations not shown in said earlier application.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding appara us arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a compressible mass of solid matter confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said matter, said apparatus including means independent of the rotary device for compressing said mass of matter.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of small incoherent particles of solid matter confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said matter, said apparatus including means independent of the rotary device for compressing said mass of matter.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said shot, said apparatus including means independent of the rotary device for compressing said mass of shot.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is movable inward and outward, a compressible mass of solid matter confined in the case between said movable part and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of mat ter.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is movable inward and outward, a mass of small incoherent particles of solid matter confined in the case between said movable part and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass oi matter.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is movable inward and outward, a mass of shot confined in the case between said movable part and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of shot.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is a screw having at its inner end a surface extending across the case, a compressible mass of solid matter confined in the case between said screw and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of matter.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is a screw having at its inner end a surface extending across the case, a mass of small incoherent particles of solid matter confined in the case between said screw and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotarydevice operative on said mass of matter.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is a screw having at its inner end a surface extending across the case, a mass of shot confined in the case between said screw and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of shot.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is a screw having at its inner end a surface extending across the case, said screw having on it a notched disk, a detent on the case arranged to engage with said disk, a compressible mass of solid matter confined in the case between said screw and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of matter.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is a screw having at its inner end a surface extending across the case, said screw having on it a notched disk, a spring on the case arranged to engage with said disk, a compressible mass of solid matter confined in the case between said screw and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of matter.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case a part of which is a screw having at its inner end a surface extending across the case, means to revent said screw from turning, a mass of shot confined in the case between said screw and the opposite wall of the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of shot.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, one head of the case being a screw, means to prevent said head from turning, a compressible mass of solid matter confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of matter.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, one head of the case being a screw, means to prevent said head from turning, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of shot.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a finger-key operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus com rising a case, a mass of solid matter confine in the case and normally subjected to pressure therein, and a rotary device including arms which extend into said mass of matter.
25. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a finger-key operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus com rising a case, a
mass of small particles of so id matter confined in the case, and a rotary device including arms which extend into and are surrounded by said mass of matter, the thickness of the mass on all sides of each arm being greater than the diameter of any of said particles.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a finger-key operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus com rising a case, a mass of small particles of so id matter con fined in the case, and a rotary device including round arms extending into and surrounded by said mass of matter, the thickness of each arm being less than the thickness of said matter between one side of the arm and the case.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a fingerkey operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of small particles of solid matter confined in the case and normally subjected to ressure therein, and a rotary device includmg arms extending into said mass of matter and close to the surrounding wall of said case.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a finger-key operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said ap aratus comprising a case having a round ody and heads, the inner surface of the body being imperforate and having a regular curvature, a mass of small particles of solid matter confined in the case and extending from one head of the case to the other, and a rotary device including a shaft and means fast thereon, the arms extending into and being surrounded by said mass of matter.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a finger-key operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device including arms which extend into said mass of shot, the shot being in contact with each arm on all sides thereof.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a finger-key operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case and normally subjected to pressure therein, and a rotary device including arms extending into said mass of shot.
31. In a ty ewriting machine, the combi nation with the carriage, of carriageretard ing apparatus and means including a fingerkey operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device including round arms extending into said mass of shot, the shot being in contact with each arm on all sides of the axis of the arm.
32. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retard.- ing apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of small particles of solid matter confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said matter, said rotary device including arms which are movable through said mass of matter, and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of matter.
33. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of small particles of solid matter con fined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said matter, said rotary device including a hub and arms extending therefrom, said arms being movable through said mass of matter, and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of matter.
34. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of small particles of solid matter conlined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said matter, said rotary device including a hub, and. round arms extending therefrom, said arms being movable through said mass of matter, and said apparatus in cluding means for compressing said mass of matter.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said shot, said rotary device including arms which are movable through said mass of shot, and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of shot.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a
mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary key operative to connect said apparatus with device operative on said shot, said rotary device including a hub and arms extending therefrom, said arms being movable through said mass of shot, and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of shot.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said shot, said rotary device including a hub and round arms extending therefrom, said arms being movable through said mass of shot and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of shot.
38. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, one head of the case being a screw having on it a notched disk, a detent on the case arranged to engage with said disk, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of shot, said rotary device including arms which are movable through said mass of shot.
39. In a typewriting machine, the cornoination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, one head of the case being a screw having on it a notched disk, a detent on the case arranged to engage with said disk, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said mass of shot, said rotary device including a hub and arms extending therefrom, said arms being movable through said mass of shot.
40. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus and means including a finger-key operative to connect said apparatus with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device including pairs of round arms arranged at different distances from the ends of said device and extending into said mass of shot.

In a typewriting machine, the com bination with the carriage of carriageretarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of matter confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said matter, said rotary device including arms arranged along its axis, and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of matter.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of matter confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said matter, said rotary device including pairs of arms arranged along its axis, and said apparatus including means torg compressingisaid mass of matter.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged'to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said shot, said rotary device including arms arranged along its axis, and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of shot.
50. in a typewriting machine, the com bination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus arranged to be connected with the carriage, said apparatus comprising a case, a mass of shot confined in the case, and a rotary device operative on said shot, said rotary device including pairs of arms arranged along its axis, and said apparatus including means for compressing said mass of shot.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-retarding apparatus comprising a rotary device, two beveled gears engaged with each other, and a pinion, the axis of rotation of the rotary device and one of said beveled gears being in a vertical plane parallel to the axis of the platen, and the axis of rotation of the other beveled gear and said pinion being horizontal, and said pinion being movable into and out of engagement with the carriage-rack.
52. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriageretarding apparatus comprising a shaft whose axis of rotation is in a vertical plane parallel to the axis of the platen, a rotary device fast on said shaft, a beveled. gear fast on said shaft, a horizontal shaft, a beveled gear fast on said horizontal shaft and engaged with the other beveled gear, and a pinion fast on said horizontal shaft, said shafts being mounted in bearings permanently secured together and movable on a horizontal axis to engage said pinion with and disengage it from the carriage rack.
53. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage of carriage-rean whose of rotation is in a vertiealfplane parallel to the axis of the platen, a ro'tarydevice fast on said shaft, a beveled gear fast on. said shaft, a horizontal shaft, a beveled gear fast on said horizontal shaft and engaged with the other beveled gear, a pinion fast on said horizontal shaft, a barrel forming a bearing for the first mentioned shaft, said barrel being mounted on a fixed axis, a bearing for the horizontal shaft formed on said barrel, and means for turning said barrel on its pivotal axis to engage said pinion with and disengage it from the carriage rack.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage and carriage-feed mechanism of carriage-retardin apparatus comprising a horizontal shaft movable upward and downward, a pinion fast on said shaft, and. a vertically movable lifting de vice having in it slots through which said shaft and the shaft of the escapement pinion extend, the last mentioned shaft forming a guide for the lifting device and said horizontal shaft being movable, by the lifting device to engage the pinion en the horizontal shaft with and disengage it from the carriage rack.
55. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage and carriage-feed mechanism of carriage-retarding apparatus comprising a horizontal shaft movable upward and downward, pinion on said shaft, and a vertically movable lifting device having in it slots through which said shaft and the shaft of the escapement pinion extend, each of said slots being open at its outer end and the lateral edges of the slot containing the last mentioned shaft extending up and down and those of the other slot extending towards the sides of the machine.
