WILLIAM W. BLAND, OF MARSHALL, TEXAS.
CHURN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. BLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Harrison and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to churns and the object of the invention is to provide a sim ple, reliable and sanitary churn especially adapted for domestic use for churning butter in small quantities, the construction of the churn preventing in an effective 'manner the entrance of flies or insects and the splashing or escape of milk therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide an effective bearing for the dasher rod of the churn, obtain a full rectilinear stroke of the same and equalize the wear on the dasher rod.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the churn embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the baflie disk or trap.
The churn contemplated in this invention is adapted, as a whole, to be formed out of crockery or earthen ware in order to add to the hygienic properties thereof, but it will, of course, be understood as the description proceeds that any suitable material may be used in the make-up thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the churn body which is provided with an internal rabbeted mouth, as shown, the rabbet being formed so as to provide an inclined circular wall 2 and an annular horizontal ledge or seat 3. The annular seat 3 is adapted for the support of a bafile disk or trap 4 which rests on said ledge as shown in Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 421,722.
Fig. 2 and is provided with a central upstanding neck 5 forming one member of the bearing for the rod 6 by which the dasher 7 is carried.
The cover 8 of the churn is cone-shaped in its general formation and is provided with a reversely inclined seating flange or rim 9 which is beveled to correspond with the bevel of the circular wall 3 of the churn body as shown to form a fairly tight engagement therewith as illustrated in Fig. 2. The cover 8, is, like the baffle plate or trap 4 provided with an upstanding neck 10 which forms the complemental portion of the bearing for the dasher rod 6. The churn body is further provided adjacent to the top thereof with diainetrical opposite leaves 11 adapted to receive and hold the outer bights of a pair of elastic or rubber bands 12, the opposite portions of which are placed around the upstanding neck 10 of the cover, whereby the cover is held snugly in place on the churn body. The churn body is preferably provided with suitable handles 13 and the cover is likewise provided with a handle 14.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
The combination with a churn body having the upper portion thereof internally rabbeted to form a seat, of a conical cover for said churn body having a beveled flange which fits into the rabbeted seat and an upstanding cylindrical neck forming an upper bearing for the dasher rod, a baffle disk or trap removably fitted in said rabbeted seat below the conical cover and also provided with an upstanding cylindrical neck forming a supplemental lower bearing for the dasher rod, and means for securing the cover on the churn body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
lVIIJLIAIiI W. BLAND.
EVitnesses:
