To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GnAnLns M. ECKLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county ot Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Mechanism for CloseteBowls, of which the following is a specification.
The resent invention relates to certain new and) useful mechanism for actuating and controlling the movement oi the valve for automatically governing the sup ly of water for the flushing of closet bowls; t 1e object of the invention being to dispense with the overhead tankor the tank reservoir ordinarily employed for maintaining a body of water for rlushingr purposes, and to so arrange Jtor the valve movement that while an ample uantity'of water is .sup lied for the proper ushing ofthe closet bow and partly refilling the same with an after-Wash, the seating or' the valve shall be such as to gradually cut-oil' the flow of water from the main supply and to finally seat itself to entirely close or cut-oil the water sup ly en-tirely without noise or jar luis providing tor anabsolutely noiseless .flushing of the closet bowl, and removing the objectionable feature of the flushing means at present employed in connection with the closet equi ment or connections installed in hotels and euses generally.
To comprehend the intention reference the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional riew taken through the piston-taire, said view illustrating the parts in position to entirely close the iloW of Water to the bowl of the closet; Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the piston-:nl `e and its controlling val :e in full upward position to open the outlet ports for the llow of water to the closet bowl, and Fig. 3 is a broken plan view of the blank from which is formed the inner c linder for the outer casing, said view disc osing the inlet ports for the flow ot water from the main supply to the outlet ports.

This handle is fitted 'within a socket in the shat't 8 lower portion of the outer casing 2, and the same is connected to the value stern 9 by means of .the leer 10. The valve stem 9 works through the slee'fe 92, .downwardly projecting from the piston' alz'e 5. The combination of an outer casing pro'- vided with a main inlet and amain outlet for the water and a main valve seat, a cylinder within the casingprovided with a series of inlet ports, a piston valve within the cylinder to control said inlet ports and having an auxiliary valve seat, a relief valve working Within the piston valve to lift the piston valve from its seat, a spring to normally hold the relief valve .to its seat, said spring being interposed between and arranged to Work against the relief valve and the piston valve, means for actuating the reliet' valve to raise the piston valve from its vseat and a controlled inlet communicating with the interior of the cylinder ting water therein to valve.
8. The combination of an outer easing provided with a main inlet and a main outlet for the Water and a main valve seat, a cylinder within the casing provided with a series of inlet ports, a piston valve working Within the cylinder to control the inlet ports of the cylinder and having an auxiliary valve seat, said piston valve being arranged to cornpletely close said inlet ports of the cylinder for admitact against the piston when the pistonv valve rests upon v2.a seat, a.`
relief valve working within the piston valve to lift the piston valve from its seat, .means for actuating the relief valve to raise the piston valve from its seat and a controlled inlet communicating with the interior of the cylinder for admitting Water therein to act against the piston valve.
