Description

APPLICATION IILBD MAY 29, 1908 Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
WITNESSES TORNEY 1m: mamas PETERS C0,, wasnnvarmv, nc.
JOHN J. HAVISIDE, JR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
READILY-DETAGHABLE SAFETY-HOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. HAvrsrDE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Readily-Detachable Safety- Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hooks, and pertains es ecially to a readily detachable or releasable safety hook for suspending boats from the davits, or for use wherever such a hook is applicable.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, some parts being in section. Fig. 2 is an edge view.
A represents a block of suitable character, size, shape and material, here shown as bifurcated, with the bill member 2 pivoted in the crotch of the block at 3. The upper end of the bill is concaved, as shown at 4, and adapted to swing into the crotch of the block and there be engaged and locked by the latch member 5. v This latch member 5 is pivoted at 6, and has a locking convexed sur face 7 arranged concentric with theconcavity 4 when the bill stands in the full line position, Fig. 1, so as to permit the engagement of the locking surface 7 with the concavity 4.
The latch 5 extends down back of the block and is adapted to bear against the back of the bill when the latter is interlocked with the latch, and retain the bill in rigid position, so that the apparatus may perform its functions as a hook or hanger.
A suitable safety attachment may be provided to prevent the shackle or ring by which the hook is engaged from coming out accidentally; such safety attachment being here shown in the form of a link 8 which is pivoted to the outer end of the bill and adapted to be folded over the bill opening and to engage in the central slot or notch 9 in the opposite end of the bill before the latter is engaged and locked by the latch 5, the free end of the link 8 being prevented from swinging upward again when the parts are locked in position by means of the locking part 7 of the latch 5. 1
The latch 5 may be provided with an eye Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 29, 1908.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908. 7 Serial No. 435,739.
10 or other suitable means of attachment for a rope or cord by which the latch can be lifted up to release the bill and allow the latter to turn on its pivot 3, and thereby release the load, whatever it may be, which is hung or connected to the hook. The shape and weight of the bill is such that normally with the latch 5 lifted intodotted line position, Fig. 1, the bill will open out, as thereindicated. In operation, with the hook open, th
shackle or other thing to be engaged in the hook is placed in the bill opening, and the link 8 turned across so that the end of the link rests in the crotch of the upper forked end of the bill. The bill is then turned to carry the concaved end of the bill into the crotch of the block and in line with the block, the latch being lifted sufficient for the purpose. The latch is then thrown down to engage with the concavity 4, and the hook is therefore locked in operative position; It is manifest that under some circumstances the safety device 8 may be omitted. The weight is supported in the bill to one side of the center of the pivot 3 in such manner that the moment the latch 5 is lifted to release the bill, the latter will turn and release its load.
This apparatus is particularly applicable for boat davits and mine hoists; but manifestly I do not desire to limit myself to any particular use or any particular environment. The block A may be provided with any suitable means of connection with a fall block or cable, not necessary here to be shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hook comprising a block, a curved bill member pivoted therein, a safety mem-. ber pivoted to the bill member, and a latch member carried by the block and having a part to engage the free end of the safety member to hold the same in osition.
2. A hook consisting of a look, a curved bill member pivoted in the block, a latch member carried by the block and engaging the bill member to hold the latter in rigid operative position, and a safety member carried by the bill member and retained in'safety position by said latch member.
3. A hook comprising a block member, a curved bill member pivoted therein, a pivoted latch member engageable with the bill member to hold the latter in rigid operative position, and a pivoted safety member carried by the bill member and operative to inclose the space included by the bill member and engageable beneath said latch member.
4:. A hook consisting -of a block, a bill member pivoted therein, said bill member having a concaved end, a safety member carried by the bill member, and a latch member carried by the block and adapted to inclose the space included by the bill member, and having a part to engage the safety member to retain the latter in position.
5. A hook consisting of a block, a bill member pivoted therein, said bill member having a concaved end, a latch member pivoted in the block and having a convexity co operating with said concavity to hold the bill member in rigid operative position, and a safety member pivoted on the outer end of the bill member and fitting a slot in the concaved end of the bill member. 7
6 YA hook comprising a block, a curved bill member pivoted in the block, a safety member having one end pivotally secured to the bill member and having the other end resting upon said member above its pivotal connection, and a latch member pivoted in the block and having a locking surface adapted to bear upon the free end of the safety member to retain the latter in a locked position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
