To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oi-IN LALLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Column, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom anying drawing.
T is invention relates to columns for structural work, and the obj ect of the present invention is to provide a reinforced composite column of metal and concrete, by means of which a metal bracing or reinforcing of the column is established from bottom to top and the metal reinforcing parts or members protected and incased by fireprooiing material which also imparts additional strength to the column as a whole.
In reinforcing and bracing the column and providing for a continuous metal support from end to end of the column, the reinforcing and bracing parts or members are combined and arranged in a special manner and incased in a fireproofing composition so that they are thoroughly protected against the action of fire.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawin s:-Figure 1 is a longitudina section taken s ightly to one side of the center of a column embodying the present invention in the preferred form thereof. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking downward. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the braces or bracket members. Fig. 4 is a cross section 0n the line 4-4 of Fi 1, illustrating the sectional construction o the cap or connection. Fig. 5 is a vertical section, illustrating the employment of a one piece cap or connection. Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the use of a centering plate and retainer ring. Fig. 7 is a cross section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a vertical section through a column, illustrating a modified arrangement of reinforcing rods. The column, as a whole, is of sectional construction or composed of sections superimposed one upon another as best indicated in Figs. 1 and 8. The lower column section embodies a base 1 having an upstanding annular flange 2 within which the lower ex tremity or edge of the lower column casing 3 is received. This casing 3 is of metal and preferably cylindrical in shape and is filled with concrete except as hereinafter stated, 4 designating such filling.
Under the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a centering plate 5 rests upon the top of the casing 3 and said centering plate has a surrounding rim or double flange forming upper and lower annular shoulders 6 and 7 within which the respective sections of the casing 3 are received and by which they are properly positioned and retained in place as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The outer surface of this centering plate may be molded or beaded and thereby given any desired ornamentation, as also indicated in Fig. 1.
The column cap or connection comprises a crown plate 8 which rests upon the upper section of the casing 3 as shown in Fig. 1 and this crown plate is provided with a taper hole 9 in its proximal center in which is received and held the iiared upper end or head 10 of an anchor 11 preferably in the form of a tube or i e, the same extending down centrally an ongitudinally of the casing sections 3 and resting directly on the base 1. Under the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the anchor 11 passes through an opening 12 in the plate 5, so that said anchor is continuous from the base to the crown late.
Within the tubu ar anchor 11 is a sectional dowel or steady pin 13 which is designed to extend throughout the entire height of the column, thus providing a practically continuous metal support for the superstructure carried by the column. This dowel or steady pin has any desired number of sections and the sections may be of equal or varying lengths, and in order to give the exact proper length to the pin 13, washers or disks 14 of metal, may be inserted between the adjacent ends of the sections 13, being held in place by the tubular anchor 11.
In order to strengthen the column and brace the crown plate 8 of the cap, braces l5 are employed, one of said braces being shown It will be noted that the body part of said brace gradually edge of the casing 3, while the reinforcing increases or tapers in width from bottom to top and at the bottom each brace is provided with a tongue or tenon 16 which passes through a corres onding hole or mortise 17 in the centering p ate 5, while adjacent to the point of junction of the body and tenon, there is provided a laterally offset rest shoulder 18 which bears upon the upper side of the plate 5 as indicated in Fig. l.
That ortion of the casing 3 which lies between t e plate 5 and the crown plate 8, forms the outer tubular part of the body of the column cap o r connection, and now by reference to Fig. 4, it will be noted that said body is formed in quadrantal sections, each of which is provided with radial wings 19 which correspond in shape with the shape of the braces 15. The wings 19 lie on opposite sides of the braces 15 and are securely fastened thereto as by rivets or bolts indicated at 20, thus forming a strong and thoroughly braced column cap or connection.
Extending vertically within the outer casing 3 is a plurality of reinforcing bars 21, which under the referred embodiment of the invention reaci from the upper side of the base 1 to the under side of the crown plate 8 of the cap, thus providing for a continuous metal supporting medium throughout the length of the column, in addition to the central dowel or pin 13, above described. The reinforcing bars 21 preferably alternate with the braces 15 in arrangement, as indicated in Fig. 2, and together with said braces, they are firmly embedded in the filling 4, the latter occupying all of the space remaining within the outer casing 3 and obtaining a firm anchoring hold upon all of the parts contained within the outer casing 3, including the anchor 11, the braces 15, tenons 16 and reinforcing bars 21.
Instead of terminating the tubular anchor at the crown plate, as above described, and shown in Fig. 1, said anchor or inner tube as it may be termed, may extend upward through and beyond the top of the crown plate as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and also in Fig. 8, and instead of making the cap of sectional construction, a one piece cap or connection may be employed as shown at 22, the same being recessed as indicated at 23 to receive the casing 3, as in Fig. 5. In thus recessing the lower end of the cap, said lower end may be enlarged and provided with an ornamental mold or bead as shown in Fig. 6, and a centering or retainer ring 24 may be interposed between the bottom edge or internal shoulder 25 of the cap and the top edge of the casing 3, as shown in the same figure.
Another practical arrangement for obtaining a continuous metal support is illustrated in Fig. 8, in which it will be seen that the cap is exteriorly reduced to form an external annular shoulder 26 which rests upon the top bars 21 extend from the top of the base 1 to the bottom edge of the cap, passing through a centering retainer ring 27, which corresponds with the ring 24, above referred to. l/Vhere another column section is placed upon a cap, as shown in Fig. 8, other reinforcing bars are interposed between the top of the cap or connection and the bottom of the superimposed cap or connection, and so on until the construction of the entire column is complete. As shown in Fig. 8, the tubular anchor may be in sections terminating in line with the top of the caps or their crown plates, and one or more additional anchor sections may be superimposed one on another until the complete column is built up. ln Fig. 8, 28 designates horizontal beams or rafters resting on brackets 29 extending laterally from the column; these brackets may be located at the same or different heights as required by the floor or ceiling levels.
In finishing up a column, bonds 30 are associated with the braces or brackets at the sides of the body of the cap or connection as shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 12. These bonds may consist of short rods or pins inserted through the braces as shown in Fig. 9, leaving the ends thereof projecting, or said bonds may be in the form of continuous rings extending through holes in the braces as shown in Fig. 10, or laid in notches 31 in the edges of the braces as in Fig. 1. The spaces between the braces or brackets are then filled in with cement or concrete, the filling extending from the centering plate up to the underside of the crown plate of the cap, the outer surface of the filling taking the form of an inverted cone or frustum thereof as shown in Fig. 11.
It will thus be seen that the metal parts or members and the concrete portions or fillings mutually support, brace, reinforce and strengthen each other, at the same time providing a continuous metal support for the superstructure and thoroughly protecting the metal from the action of fire, except the outer metal casing 3 which forms the mold or retainer for the filling and other parts and gives an attractive finish to the complete column.
In applying the fireproofing composition around the cap or connection, an outer metallic shell 32 may be used as shown in Figs. 11 and 12, the said shell acting as a mold for holding and shaping the plastic material as it is poured around the cap. After the filling or fireproofing indicated at 33 hardens, the shell 31 may be left in place to give an ornamental finish to the cap, or said shell may be removed if desired.
To secure a beam upon the cap shown in Fig. 11, a bolt may be employed as shown at 34 in said figure with the head thereof embedded in the lling and the threaded shank j tenon engagement with said plate.

6. A column comprising a casing, a filling therefor, a cap for the casing, a centrally arranged tube incased in the filling, and a dowel or steady pin arranged in said tube.
7. A column comprising a casing, a filling therefor, a cap for the casing, a centrally arranged tube extending from the cap downward and embedded in the filling, and a sec tional pin mounted in said tube.
8. A column comprising a casing, a filling therefor, a cap for the casing, a centrally arranged anchor of tubular construction, a sectional pin mounted in said anchor, and
washers or disks interposed between the adjacent ends of the pin sections.
9. A column comprising a casing, a filling therefor, a cap for said casing, a tubular anchor fast to tlie cap and extending down into the casing and embedded in the lling, and a steady pin mounted within said anchor.
10. A column comprising a casing, a filling therefor, a centering plate resting on said casing, a cap resting on said plate, and a steady pin extending from base to cap and passing through the centering plate.
