PETER KIERNAN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES HENDERSON, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
TOE-PAD FOR HORSE SHOE-TIPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented nec. 1, 1908.
Application filed March 16, 1908. Serial No. 421,446.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER KIERNAN, of Minneapolis, I-Iennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Pads for Horseshoe-Tips, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a toe pad for use in connection with a rubber horse shoe pad which will raise the toe of the hoof to the level of the rubber pad at the heel and cushion it also and deaden the sound of the hoof on the pavement.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification; Figure 1 is a perspective view of the horseshoe with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the manner of mounting the toe pad on the tip.
In the drawing, 2 represents the heel pad mounted upon a flexible plate 3 as usual in pads of this kind. I make no claim t0 this device as it is already patented and in general for.
the flanges grip the pad and hold it securely in place. When it 1s worn down it may be removed and a new pad substituted there- This toe pad will prevent the horse from slip ing, will support the toe of the hoof on allevel with the heel, will deaden the sound when the horse is traveling over a pavement and will act as a cushion to yieldingly support the toe of the hoof and take up the jar and shock resulting from the hoof striking the hard pavement.
I claim as my invention:
The combination with a horse shoe heel. pad and a metal tip therefor, having a comparatively thin forward portion below the level of the tread surface of said heel pad, said forward portion having thin curved flanges formed thereon witha space between them, said flanges being vertical continuations of the inner and outer surfaces of the forward portion of said tip and having inwardly curved edges, the throat or opening between the said inwardly curved edges being narrower than the space at the base of said flanges, and a rubber toe pad adapted to be driven transversely into the space between said langes and be gripped and held therein by said inwardly turned edges, the outer face of said toe pad being on a level substantially with the tread surface of said heel pad, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of March 1908.l
PETER KIERNAN.
