PITLESS Application filed Dechber 30,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WALTER F. S'rmrrsoN,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Detroit, in the county ot' Vayne 5 and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in P`it less Scales, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the a ccompanyin'g drawings.
The invention relates to wagon scales of that type known as pitless, and the invention consists in certain features of construc- 'tion as hereinafter set forth.
ln the dra.wings*l `igure l is a perspective view ot the scale, with a portion of the platform removed; Figx is a perspective view of the supporting fulcrum loop for the lever; Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof; Fig. l is a perspective view of the shackle connection for'the levers; and Fig. 5 is a section thereof.
rlhe stationary frame of the scale comprises end sills A and B, which are cross connected with each other by rods C. lhcse rods not only torni a structural part ot' the frame, but also are employed tor supporting the hangers for the platform levers, and the arrangement is such as to greatly condense the vertical height ot' the space necessary for said levers.
As shown, the rods C are tubplar, and are connected to the sills B by beingthreaded at their ends to pass. through apertures in the web portions ot' the sill. Upon the threaded portion of the rods ivs secured a correspondingly threaded collar l), which l forms an abutment bearing against the in ner face of the sill, while a clamping` nut engages the outer end of the red and bears against the outer face ofthe sill. The col lar D,'in addition to forming apart of the `locking device for the rods and sills, also 1 coperates with the platform lever hangers, as will be hereinafter described.
lhe platform levers preferably consist of a pair ot main levers and a ceperating pair ot short levers, the former E E extending from the outer opposite ends oil the frame diagonally across the same, and having their Vtree ends suitably. connected with the steelyard rod. The short levers E l extend l'rom the opposite inner ends of the trame diagonally to their point of engagement with the main levers. As it is an object to condense the vertical height as greatly as Specification of Letters Patent.

possible, these levers are arranged beneath' the rods C, with only snlhcient clearance to permit ot' the necessary movement in the operation of the scale. In this position the levers are supported by hangers F, which are in the form et' loops hung over the rod C, and engaging the nlcrum pivots ot the levers. The hangers F are oi the twisted forni shown, so that the portion of the loopy which embraces the rod C extends in a plane perpendicular to the axis thereof,
`while the tureations of the hanger engage the fulcrum pivots of the levers. Thus when 'the iulcrum pivot G is engaged with the eyes ot the hanger the lever will be freely supported beneath the rods @as described.
braces b b. rThese braces are preferably c termed oi a single metal bar ot' oblong cross section, having the long diameter ot said section arranged in a vertical plane for the opposite brace portions Z) ZV, and the bar bcingtwisted centrally to arrange the long diameter ot the section horizontally. This cent-ral portion d is riveted or otherwise secured to the strut c, which is of an inverted ttshaped form, ha ving itslower ends bolted or rivetertto the beam c.'
ln the center ot' the port ion l is formed the cup bearing with which vthe pin e oi the shackle engages, said shackle having a correspondingly cupped bearing f in its lower bar t'or engaging the pin g of the short lever. This pin g .is secured to a bracket k secured to the end ot the beam forming the short lever-, and extending tln'ough the space between the members a, and (Z and the U shaped strut c. The construction just described is one. which greatly economizes space, as by arranging the shackle connection above the main beam of the levers, it utilizes a space available beneath the platform. lurlhermore, the lower edges of the "lo vt'urther condense the clearance spacel lll()
