PASSENGER-CAR.'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 190B.
vTo all wwm it 'may con-cem:
Be vit known that we, SAMUELM. OUR- wEN and WARREN M. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing in- Haverford, and Moores, Pennsylvania, respectively, have invented certain Improvements in Passenger- Cars, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in cars of the type in which a passenger pays his fare before entering the car.
One object of our invention is to so construct the car that the dividing partition or rail separating the platform into ingress or egress sections will extend into the body of the car past the doorway and yet will allow for the closing of the doors.
Our invention further relates to certain' improvements in seat structures for the platform, applied to this type of car.
A furt er object of the innention is to convert the ordinary type of car into one in which the fare is paid on entering the car.
ln the accompanying drawings :-Figure l, is a sectional plan View of one end of a passenger car illustrating our invention; Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2, Fig. l; Fig. 3, is a sectional plan view similar to Fig. l, showing the doors closed and the seats extended; Fig. 4, is a sectional view on the line 4 4, Fig. 1, showing the seats folded; Fig. 5, is a sectional plan view on the line` 5 5, Fig. 4, showin the seats extended; and Fig. 6, 1s a view loo ing in the direction of the arrow 6, Fig. 4.
D is the body of the car.
E is the platform. 1
D is a transverse partition separating the platform from the body of thecar, and in this artition is the ordinary doorway d d)by sliding doors d of the usual type.
E is the ordinary end vestibule section of a platform.
E2 is a-fxed side having a channel f for a sliding door F, which is the exit door when the platform is at the forward end of the car.
On the opplosite side is a series of doors G,
which, in t e present instance, can be folded back against the section El of the vestibule, if desired, or other types of doors may be used without departing from our invention.
A is the rail separating the platform E into ingress and egress sections e and e', and this rail is offset at a to allow additional room for the conductor to stand on the egress section of the platform. The rail terminates at the doors d and an extension A of this rail is secured to thefioor of the body D of the car and extends into the car so as to divide thedoorway and the body of the car near the doorway into egress and ingress passageways i and i', so as to prevent the passengers crowding in passing through the doorway.
The rail A is made with a section a below the main rail which not only acts as a guard but also carries the pivoted seat sections B, B', as shown in Fig. 4. Each section is made in two parts b, b hinged together as shown and, in the present instance, they have hooked ends b2 which engage the sockets c, c on the framework of the car ywhen the seats are extended for use. Folding brackets g on the doors support the said sections at the center when extended; and when the sections are folded out of the way, as illustrated in Fig. 4, they do not interfere with the ingress and egress of passengers. When the latform is at the forward end of the car and t e doors G closed then the seat sections may be extended for the use of passengers.
We claim 1. The combination in a passenger car, of a body portion, a platform, a transverse partition separating the platform from the body of the car, a doorway therein, doors adapted to close the doorway, a rail dividing the platform into ingress and egress sections, and a continuation of said rail extending into the body ofthe car beyond the doors.
2. The combination in a passenger car, of a body ortion, a platform, a partition separating t e platform from the body of the car and having a doorway therein, sliding doors for closing said doorway, and two rails dividing the doorway into in ress and egress sections, one rail being wit 1in the car and terminating at the door, the other rail being on the latform and terminating at the door. 3. T e combination in a passenger car, of a body portion, a platform, a partition separating the platform from the body of the car and having a doorway flierein, sliding doors for closing said doorway, and two rails dividing the doorway into ingress and egress sections, one rail being within the car and terminating at the door, the other rail being on the platform and extending at an angle from the door towards the side of the platform.
4. VThe combination in a passenger car, Vof a body ortion, a platform, a transverse partition dividing the platform from the body of the car and having a doorway therein, sliding doors for closing said doorway, two rails, one on the inside ofthe car and the other on the platform and dividing the doorway into two passageways, the'platform rail continuing at right anglesv towards one side of the platform and oset to increase the size of the egress section of the platform for the purpose described.
5. The combination in a passenger oar, of a platform., a rail separating the platform into ingress and' egress sections, a folding seat hung on said rail, and means for supporting the seat section in its extended positlon.
6. The combination in a passenger oar, of
a platform, a' rail dividing the platform into 1.5 two sections, folding seat sections, one susended from each side of the rail, and means for supporting each section in its extended position.
ln testimonywhereof, we have signed our 20 names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
