Be it known that I, THOMAS B. MODLIN, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Hurdi longitudinal section, one of the rails land, in the county of Knox and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Rail- T ie, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail ties and fasteners and its obj ect is to provide a tie having integral means for engaging rails and preventing them from spreading or tilting outwardly7 said rails being readily removable from the tie.
Another object is to provide a tie having means especially designed for use at the joints of the rails for firmly engaging the rails7 thus permitting fish plates and bolts to be dispensed witl Afurther object is to provide removable means for straddling the tie and engaging the rails at the j oints thereof, said means having novel fastening devices for holding them in position.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a tie embodying the present improvements, the middle portion of it being removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tie. Fig. 3 is a being shown partly removed from the tie. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the removable rail engaging jaw.
Referring to the figures by characters Of reference, 1 designates a metal tie body provided adj acent one end with an integral upstanding jaw 2 so shaped and positioned as to constitute an abutment'for the outer base flange of a rail A and for the outer face of the head of said rail, that wall of the jaw adj oining the rail being curved as indicated at 3. The other base flange of the rail engaged by the jaw 2 is lapped by a small aw 4 integral with the tie 1. The jaws 2 and 4: are so located that by tilting the rail A inwardly and partly withdrawing it from under the jaw 4: said rail can be removed from between the jaws as indicated in Fig. 3.
The foregoing means for securng a rail upon the tie is designed for use only at points between the ends of the rails, and if both Specification of Letters Patent.

l ends of the tie are located between the ends of the rails thereon each end of the tie will be provided with jaws such as shown at 2 and 4. When'however, one end of the tie supports the meeting ends of two rails said tie is provided with rail engaging devices different vfrom the jaws 2 and 4- and which are designed as substitutes for the ordinary fish plates. This fastening means consists of a jaw 5 integral with the tie and having its inner face so shaped as to fit snugly against the outer base fianges and the outer faces of the heads of the rails, said jaw also projecting a desired distance between the heads and base flanges and close to the webs of the rails. Said jaw 5 extends beyond the sides of the tie so as to present a broad bearing surface to the rails. The inner base flanges of the meeting rails are designed to be engaged by a jaw 6 which extends between said base flanges and the inner portions of the heads and also has depending end extensions 7 which lap the sides of the tie and eXtend under the rails as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 4. This removable jaw has its upper face curved and provided with a groove 8 eXtending from the bottom thereof to a point adj acent the top of the tie, said groove being located at the center of the jaw. This groove is designed to receive a curved tongue 9 extending from a looking key 10 which is insertible into an opening 11 formed within the tie. A recess 12 is formed in the top of the tie adj acent its opening and is designed to receivean eXtension 13 projecting from the key, said extension constituting a stop for limiting the movement of the key into the opening 11. Registering openings 14 are formed within the key 10 and the tie and are designed to receive a securng bolt 15 which may be held in place in any preferred manner as by means of a cotter pin 16.
When it is desired to position a rail between the j aws 2 and 4 the rail is tilted and the inner base flange thereof slipped under the jaw 4, after which said rail is swung into an upright position until the outer face of the head thereof is brought against the upper portion of the jaw 2, as shown in Fig. 2. The two meeting ends of the rails A upon the other end of the tie are then placed in engagement with the jaw 5, after which jaw 6 is placed over the tie so as to straddle it and to engage the inner base fianges of the rails. The key 10 is then inserted into the opening 11 with tongue 9 in groove 8 after which the bolt 15 is inserted transversely through the tie and key and secured. The two rail ends are thus firinly held in alinement without the use of fish plates and are free to expand or contract as the result of,
'plng the sides of the tie, said jaw being shaped to receive the inner base fiange of the rail, a key within and extending from the tie, a tongue integral with the key and extending over the removable aw, and means extending transversely through the tie for detachably securing the key upon the tie.
'2. The combination with a metal tie having an integral aw constituting an abutinent for the outer base flange and the outer face of the head; of a reinovable jaw straddling the tie and disposed to embrace the inner base flange of a rail, said jaw having a grooved upper face, a key detachably secured within the tie, and a tongue integral therewith and seated within the groove.
3. The combination with a tie having an integral rai] engaging jaw extending beyond opposite faces of the tie;.of a reinovable jaw straddling the tie and having one face shaped to receive the base flange of a rail, said reniovable jaw having a groove therein, a key detachably secured within the tie, aA tongue integral therewith and seated within the groove, and a stop projection upon the key, there being a recess within the tie constituting a seat for the projection.
