UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL K. DENNIS,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
AXLE-SKEIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27', 1908.
Application filed May 8, 1908. Serial No. 431,573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL K. DENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chil cago, in the county of Cook and StateA of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle-Skeins, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to axle skeins having a common tubular form and designed to be connected to the body ofthe axle in any prei ferred manner. f
The particular form of skein and axle in which my invention finds embodiment is y shown in Patent No. 859,209, dated July Q, 1907, the construction therein shown including a substantially tubular axle comprising a pair of U-shaped bars embracing the inner ends of the axle skeins; the object of my invention being to provide an interior strengthening web that is longitudinally and vertically arranged within the interior of the skein, said web being formed of wrought metal and cast integral with the body of the skein. I attain this object by mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an axle skein and showing the manner in which the axle members are connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig.` 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 2 along the line A-B. Eig. 4 is a cross section of E ig. 2 along the line C-D.
The same reference numerals designate like `parts throughout the several views.
5 designates the axle skein, having an interior hollow portion 6 and upper and lower longitudinally arranged ribs 7, the inner end of the skein being provided with vertically and horizontally arranged openings designed to receive the securing bolts.
8 represents a wedge-shaped plate that is longitudinally and vertically arranged within the hollow portion 6 and embedded at its opposite edges in the metal composing the ribs 7, said plate being provided with notches 9 on its oppositely disposed edges for the purpose of preventing any relative movement of the body of the skein and said web. It is also provided with an opening 10 at its inner end that is designed to receive one of the securing bolts that connect the skein with the axle. In the construction as shown advantage is taken of a contraction ofthe metal composing the web in cooling which produces a stress in a longitudinal direction that materi ally increases the strength of the axle against breaking strains.
I am aware that it is not new to cast wrought iron parts integral with cast metal parts as means for giving additional strength thereto; but I believe I am the Iirst to provide an axle skein having embodied therein the construction as illustrated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An axle skein including, in combination, a wrought metal rib cast integral with the body portion oi the skein and extending longitudinally and vertically within its interior.
2. An axle skein having, in combination, an interior portion and longitudinally arranged ribs on the upper and lower surface thereof, and a wrought metal plate having its opposite edges embedded in said ribs.
3. An axle skein having, in combination, a wrought metal plate longitudinally and vertically arranged within said skein, cast integral therewith, said plate having one or more notches on the edge thereof.
4. An axle skein having, in combination, a longitudinally and vertically arranged wrought metal plate cast integral with the body of the skein, said plate having a tapered form and provided with a plurality of notches upon opposite edges thereof.
5. In an axle skein, a skein in combination with an axle, and means for securing the skein to the axle, of a wrought metal plate cast integral with the body of the skein and extending longitudinally relative thereto, and an opening through said plate designed to receive the securing means connecting the skein with the axle member.
