JOSEPH A. RAMSEY, OF BEATRICE, NEBRASKA.
HUSKER.
Specification of Letters Petent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Application filed. September 30, 1907. Serial No. 395,265.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. RAMSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Husker, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corn huskers and has for its object to provide a strong, durable and thoroughly eflicient device of this char:
acter which will effectually remove the husks with very little exertion 011 the part of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a husker including a combined thumb and palm piece having a heel piece associated therewith and adjustable laterally of the thumb piece thereby to adapt the device to the hand of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide one of the sections or pieces with a husking hook having a depending lug or spur adapted to engage any one of a series of perforations in the thumb piece whereby the hook may be adjusted laterally of said thumb piece.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construe tion may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corn husking implement constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 1s a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the comblned thumb and palm piece. Fig. 4: 1s a similar view of view of the husking hook detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved husking implement forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a relatively stationary thumb piece 5 preferably formed of metal and provided with a swell or projection 6 to accommodate the ball of the thumb.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective I One end of the section 5 is provided with a curved terminal or strap 7 adapted to bear against the back of the hand and assist in preventing accidental displacement of the husker.
Associated with the thumb piece 5 is an adjustable heel piece 8 also provided with a curved terminal or strap 9 adapted to bear against the back of the hand and which in connection with the strap 7 serves to prevent longitudinal movement of the husking implement.
Secured to and preferably formed integral withthe stationary thumb piece 5 is a palm piece 10 having its free edge extended beyond the adjacent edge of the thumb piece and curved upwardly, as indicated at 11 so as to prevent cutting or otherwise abrading the hand during the husking operation.
Secured to the inner edge of the heel piece or section 8 are screws or similar fastening devices 12 and 13 which pass through elongated slots 14. formed in the stationary thumb piece or section 5 and by means of which the heel piece 6 may be clamped in adjusted position, there being washers interposed between the thumb piece 5 and the clamping nuts 15 to assist in preventing the nuts 15 from being forced through the adj acent slots in said thumb piece.
The bolt or fastening device 13 serves as a pivot when the heel section 8 is adjusted laterally, the adjacent slot or opening 14 being sufliciently large to prevent binding of the parts when the device is adjusted to the hand of the operator.
Formed in the stationary thumb piece 5 and preferably located at the base of the swell or projection 6 are a series of perforations 17 adapted to receive the terminal spur or lug 18 of a husking hook 19 so that. by moving the spur 18 in engagement with the different perforations in the thumb piece the bill of the hook may be adjusted later ally on the husking implement.
The husking hook '19 is offset at 20 to form a flat extension 21 which bears against the thumb piece and is rigidly combined therewith by means of a bolt or similar fastening device 22.
While it is preferred to form the thumb and palm pieces integral, it will of course be understood that the same may be formed in separate sections and bolted or otherwise rigidly secured together.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
1. A corn husker including a thumb piece having a series of perforations formed therein and provided with a palm piece, there being spaced longitudinally disposed slots formed in the palm-piece, a heel piece adjustable laterally of the thumb piece, a hook carried by the thumb piece, a fastening device piercing the thumb piece and engaging the hook, clamping devices passing through the slots in the palm piece for clamping the heel piece in adjusted position, and a spur depending from the hook and adapted to engage the perforations in the thumb piece.
2. A corn husker including a relatively stationary thumb piece having a curved terminal adapted to bear against the back of the hand and provided with a palm piece, a movable heel piece associated with the thumb piece and provided With a similar curved terminal, there being a series of perforations formed in the thumb piece, a hook carried by the thumb piece and provided with an offset defining an extension, a fastening device passing through the thumb piece and engaging the extension of the hook, a spur depending from said extension and adapted to enter the perforations in the thumb piece, and means for clamping the heel piece in adjusted position.
3. A corn husker including a thumb piece having a palm piece extending laterally from one edge thereof, an adjustable heel piece, one of said pieces being provided With spaced slots, a hook carried by the slotted piece, and fastening devices extending through the slots for clamping the heel piece in adjusted position, one of said fastening devices forming in effect a pivot when the other fastening device is released.
4. A corn husker including relatively sta' tionary and movable sections curved to conform to the shape of the palm of thehand and having their adjacent ends over-lapped, a hook carried by one of said sections, clamping arms carried by both sections and adapted 'to embrace the back of the hand of the operator With their adjacent ends spaced apart, and means for clamping the movable section in engagement With the stationary section.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
