AGNES D. SIMMONDS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
NURSERY ROCKING-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13, 1908.
Application filed April 4, 1905. Serial No. 253,812.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AoNns D. SIMMONDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l ursery Rocking- Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in nursery rocking chairs.
The object of my invention is to provide a chair particularly adapted for nursery purposes.
My invention provides a chair in which the arm rests thereof may be swung from one position to another to remove them from interference with the movements of-the occupant and for the further purpose of forming towel racks.
My invention provides further, on one of the arm rests, a shelf adapted to support a wash bowl or other toilet articles and movable, when not used for such purposes and when the arm rest is swung to the closed position, to a position under the seat.
My invention provides further, releasable means for locking the arm rests in the open and closed positions.
Other novel features are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation view of my improved nursery rocking chair. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the dotted line ab of Fig. 1, the arm rests being shown in solid lines in the open position andin dotted lines in the closed position. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the dotted lines cd of Fig. 1, the locking bolt being shown engaged with the bar hinged to one of the rockers. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3,
the locking bolt being shown withdrawn from the bar pivoted to one of the rockers. Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the dotted line ef of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the dotted lineg-h of Fig. 1 and showing one of the mech- 1iniisms for locking the arm rests to the chair Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.
The chair body is provided with a back 1 having the ordinary horizontal seat 2, the back and seat being mounted upon two rockers 3 which are mounted respectively in grooves provided in the upper sides of two horizontal supporting members 4, connected by a transverse horizontal bar 5 and forming the rocker support. Upon the upper side of each supporting member 4 is secured thereto, by vertical bolts 7, a spring 6, the forward and rear ends of which bear downward respectively upon two horizontal pins 8 extending inwardly from the adjacent rocker 3.
Each rocker is provided with the following described mechanism for limiting its rocking movement and for releasably locking, when desired, the rocker against any movement. Pivoted at its upper end to a horizontal pin 9, mounted preferably in the outer side adjacent the forward end of each rocker 3, is a bar 10, which extends downwardly through a horizontally disposed bracket 11, secured upon the outer side of the adjacent supporting member 4. A horizontal locking bolt 12, disposed perpendicular to the bar 10, is slidably mounted in the bracket 11 and is adapted to have its inner end enter in a transverse hole 13 provided in the bar 10. A spring 14 encircles the bolt 12 and has its outer end bearing upon the inner side of the bracket 11 and its inner end bearing against a head 15 provided on the bolt 12 and adapted to be forced by the spring 14 into the hole 13. On the bolt 12 is provided a radial pin 16 which, when the bolt 12 is drawn outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4 and the bolt 12 rotated part of a circle, will engage the outer side of the bracket 11 and prevent inward movement of the bolt 12. The position of the hole 13 in the bar 10 is such that when the bolt 12 is turned so that the pin 16 registers with the slot 17 provided in the bracket 11 the spring 14 will force the bolt inwardly into the hole 13 and retain the chair with its seat 2, in a horizontal'position.
At one side of the chair is provided a swinging arm rest comprising the upper and lower horizontal members 18 and 19 mounted by means of hinges 20 and 21 respectively, upon the chair back 1. To the forward ends of the members 18 and 19 are secured respectively the upper and lower ends of the vertical member 22 of the arm rest. To the inner side of the member 19 is secured a horizontal shelf 23 adapted, when the arm rest having the member 19 is swung to the proper position, to be disposed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, beneath the seat 2. The shelf 23 may be provided with a hole or depression 24 substantiallyhorizontal adapted to receive therein a wash bowl. It may also be provided with a similar recess 25 adapted to receive therein asoap dish. Upon the upper side of the shelf 23 is secured one end of an upwardly extending spring 26, the other end of which is adapted to spring upward when the shelf is in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 and engage the outer side of the the chair in the closed positions, each arm is provided with the following described mechanismz On the lower end of each vertical member of the chair arm is mounted a case 33 in which is slidably mounted a vertical bolt 34 having thereon a horizontal projection 35 extending through a slot 36 in the case 33. A coil spring 37 encircles the bolt 34 and bearing against the inner upper side of the case 33 normally forces the lower end. of the bolt 34 to a position in which it will enter a socket 38 secured onthe chair seat 2 when-the arm rest is swung to the closed position. If it is desired to withdraw the shelf 23 to the position shown in Fig. 2, in solid lines, the bolt 34 carried by the member 22, is forced upwardly against the pressure of the spring 37 until it clears the socket 38 at which time the shelf 23 may be swung outwardly with its supporting arm rest. To limit the rocking movement of the rockers each of the bars 10 is provided above and bestriking the bracket 1], limit the movement of the bar 10 and thereby limit the rocking movement of the rockers 3.
Various modifications of my invention may be made without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A nursery chair provided with the chair body having the seat and. back, an arm rest comprising two horizontal members disposed one above the other and hinged at their rear ends respectively to the back, and a vertieal member secured at its ends respectively to the forward ends of the horizontal members, and a shell carried by the lower horizontal member of the arm rest and movable, when the arm rest is properly swung, to and from a position under the seat.
2. A nursery chair provided, with the elmir body having a seat and back, an arm rest comprising two horizontal members disposed one above the other and hinged at their rear ends respectively to the baek, and a verlieal member secured at its ends respeetively to the forward ends of the horizontal members, a shell carried by the lower horizontal member of the arm rest and, movable, when the arm rest is properly swung, to and from a position under the seat, and means for releasably locking the arm rest in the open and closed position.
In testimony whereof I alliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
