. BUCKLE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13, 1908.
Application ma July 3i, 1907. Serial a 386,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE PEARL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to buckles and as herein embodied, is designed to produce a device of this class specially adapted for use on belts, garters etc. etc. 1
Several forms of a buckle suitable for carrying my invention into efiect, are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a structed in accordance with my lnvention, the end portions of a strap being shown in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof, taken onthe line s 8 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a erspective view of the buckle detached. ig. 4 illustrates a slightly modified form of the buckle, and Fig. 5 shows a further modification.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the buckle, which, in the preferred form, consists of a rectangular frame 2, having about centrally of its length, a cross barv3, to which one end 4 of a belt, garter or strap may be attached in the usual manner by a line or two of stitching, as shown in Fig. 4. Preferably, the strap is provided with an opening 5 for engagement with a hook-like projection 6 of the cross bar 3, as shown in Flg. 2. The frame of the buckle is curved somewhat to throwthe ends 7 thereof outward, so that when the free end of the strap is passed through the buckle, against bulging, working loose etc. The free end of the strap is secured by having a series of openings 8 formed therein, for engagement wit an integral rojection or fixed tongue 9 of the frame. projection or tongue may lie within the frame, as shown in Fi s. 1 to 4 inclusive, or outside the same, as in ig.
5. In either case, it extends in a direction opposite the pull of the free end of the strap an under ordinary conditions, forms a seplan view of a buckle con-' it will lie flat and be held cure fastening. After the strap haslbeen in use for a time and has become somewhat drawn out or stretched, the openings 8 there'- in, undergo a corresponding change in shape and take a more or less elongated form, which frequently results in disengagement from the tongue, when the latter 1s of uni form width throughout its length or tapered toward its outer end. In order to overcome this difficulty, I provide both the tongue 9 and the hook 6 with a terminal enlargement or head 10, preferably of heart or other suitable shape to present retaining shoulders 11, which act to render the fastening secure un 'der all conditions and at the same time, per-' mit the strap to be readily disengaged by hand.
The various advantages of my invention as well as the mode of o eration will be readily understood from tl ie foregoing descri tion.
aving, therefore, tion, I claim:
A buckle comprising an open rectangular described my invenframe, the outer face of WlllCh is concaved from end to end to reduce curvature of the strap, a cross bar integrally formed with said frame, a centrally disposed projection bent upwardly and then inwardly and terminating in an approximately heart-shaped head, said heart-shaped head lying in a horizontal plane above said cross bar and a second similarly formed rojection extending inwardly from one o the end bars of the frame in a direction 05) osite that of the first named projection, sai natlng in an ap roxlmately heart-shaped head which lies su stantially in the plane of the bar by which it is carried.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two'subscribing witnesses, this 29th day of EUGENE PEARL. Witnesses:
OHALS Boson,
MARY Boson.
