Description

W. H. VIBBER. ELECTRIC INSTALLATION MOLDING BOX.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 11, 1907.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908 lf l llllllllll STATES PATE T onnion.
WHEELER H. VIBBER, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE GILLETTE-VIBBER C,O., OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, 1} CORPORATION.
ELECTRIC-INSTALLATION MOLDING-BOX.
Application filed June 11, 1907 Serial No. 378,349.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WHEELER VIBBER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New London, in the county of NewLondon 5' and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric- Installation Molding-Boxes, and I do hereby declare the following, when 'taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings and the-letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and. which said drawings'constitute part of this specification, and represent, in Figure '1 a reverse plan view of one form which the body of my improved electric installation molding-box may assume, this particular box-body having one peripheral molding-end recess and being therefore adapted for use conjunction with a single strip of molding. Fig. 2 a corresponding view of a box-body having two peripheral molding-end recesses located opposite each other, one of them containing two insulating bushings. Fig. 3 a corresponding view ofthe box-body having two peripheral molding-end recesses located at a right angle toeach other. Fig. 4. a corresponding viewof the box-body having three peripheral molding-end recesses. Fig. 5 a corresponding view of the box-body having four peripheral molding-end recesses. Fig. 6 a view in side elevation of the boxbody shown by Fig. 1- as provided'with a flat cover. Fig. 7 a plan-view of the cover shown by Fig. 6. Fig. 8 an edge view thereof. Fig. 9 a view on a reduced scale of the boxcup-shaped. or chambered cover having a wide flange to adapt it to form a hearing for canopies varying in diameter and showing having certain details of construction and combinationsof arts as will be hereinafter described and polnted out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as shown in Specification of Letters Patent.
body of Fig. 1 shown in conjunction with a- Patented. Sept. 2a, 1908.
Figs. 1 and 6, the circular box-body Q is formed in its periphery with a single shallow, rectangular molding-end recess @adapted in width and depth to receive the end of ,a strip of wooden molding'such as is commonly used in the installation of electric wires upon the surface of a ceiling or upon a side wall; the
said recess being open on the side closed by the cover of the box. The inner wall 40f this recess is formed with two corresponding vertical U-shaped ports 5 from which the wires are led from the molding into the interior of the box these ports being arranged to be open on the side closed by thecover of the box. By preference these ports will be occupied by insulating bushings 6 as shown in Fig. 2, though they may be omitted. The inner walls of the recesses may be formed withone, two or three ports 5 as desired.
The said walls 4 are located at a right angle to the plane of the body, form abutments for the ends of the molding strips, provide means for carrying insulating bushings and preserve the structural integrity ofthe body.
* As shown the box-body is formed with four screw holes 7 by means of which it is fastened to the ceiling, with an inwardly projecting lug .8 havin a threaded screw hole 9 for the reception 0% one of the screws by means of which the cover is secured in place, and with a threaded screw hole 10 for another screw for the same purpose, The screws are not shown,
The box-body 11 shown by Fig. 2 is provided with two molding-end recesses 3 10-. cated opposite each other, while the boxbody 12 shown by Fig. 3 has two moldmgend recesseslocated at a ri ht angle to each other. The box-body 13 0 Fig. 4 has three such recesses, and the boxbody 1 1 of Fig. 5 four of them. It is enough to say in this connection'that the number of. recesses will depend upon the number of moldings emp loyed.
My improved box-body may have any suitable cover applied to it. In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 I have showna fiat circular cover 15 provided with screw'holes 16 and 17 and furnished upon its upper face with a circular series of beveled positioning lugs 18 located just within its edge so as to collectively have 'theiunction ofa retaining-flange. These lugs are spaced s9 as to enter the moldingerid recesses 3 in pairs as shown by Fig. 6 and and formed a centrally arranged thread ed opening 22 into which the stem 23 of a' lamp-fixture isscrewd, it bein designed to have a lamp-fixture carried by t e cover even as the coveris carriedby the box-body.
1. An electric installation molding-box body formed in its periphery with one or more shallow, rectangular molding-end 're-' cesses open on the side closed by the cover of I the box and each se arated from the interior of the body by aw'a U-shaped ports open on the slde closed by the cover of the'box,'in combination with a box-cover adapted to close the said recesses and'ports as described.
2. An electric installation moldingbox body formed in its periphery with one or. more shallow, rectangular molding-end. recesses open on the side closed by-the cover of,
the box and eachse arated from the interior of the body by a wall containing one. or more .U-shaped portso'pen on the jlde closed by containing one or more seeps? the cover of the box; in, combination with '35 one or more insillating bushings located at the bottom, of the said recess or recesses and -vided with a series-of positioning lugs arrange to enter the said recesses and en age with t e end walls thereof, and the said ugs being beveled to'fit the be'vels of the molding.
4. The combination with a circular elec'tnc installation molding-box body formed in its periphery with one or more shallow, rec-' Q tangular molding-end recesses open on the; j side closed by the cover .of the box; of a cir- I 'cularbox cover ada ted to have a lamp-fixtime attached directly to it and formed with a wide circular flange to act as a-bearing for canopies varying diameter, the said flange being larger in'diameter, than'the diameter of the box-body. L I e In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presenceof two subscrib;
mg witnesses.
