i UNITED STATES JOHN EDWARD LONG, OF CHILLICOTHE, OHIO.
TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug'. 18, 1908.
Application filed August 29, 1907. Serial N o. 390,671.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD LONG, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Table, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates generally to tables, and more especially to that class adapted to have a leaf or leaves combined therewith of different sizes and shapes.
The object of the invention is to rovide a novel table attachment which wil forma perfectly rigid support for any extra leaves which may be employed to increase the size or change the shape of a table, which will not in any way iiiar or deface the table nor detract from its appearance, which will secure a positive connection between the table to and the supplemental leaf or leaves, wliicli will be simple of construction, easy to apply and economical to construct, and by the use of which the cost of production of the table will be measurably decreased.
IVith the above and other objects in view as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts of a table attachment, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of a square table exhibiting two extra leaves applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view of a portion of the table top displaying the manner in which an extra leaf is combined therewith. Fig. 3 is aperspective detail view, partly in section, of the bracket constituting one of the essential features of the present invention. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation exhibiting the manner in which the bracket is assembled with the table to Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing t e manner in which a square table may be converted into a round one. Fig. 7 is a similar view displaying the manner in which a circular table may be enlarged.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the table top, and 2 the curtain thereof, which as usual is reinforced intermediate of its ends by braces 3, of which there may be any In this form of the invention the table is exhibited as square, and asferred contour and has near its outer end a longitudinally-disposed seat 6 and a transverse aperture 7 that is located approximately midway of the length of the seat and designed to receive a pin 8, the function of which will resently appear. The inner end of the brac et has secured to it a clip 9 having a hooked terminal 10 that is designed to engage a slot 11 formed in a keeper 12 secured to the under side of the table and between it and the curtain, the orificed ortion of the keeper being projected beyon the curtain to permit of its being engaged by the hooked terminal 10 of the clip. As the keeper 12 is dis osed on the under side of the table as stated? it is necessary in order to permit the upper edge of the bracket to be disposed in alinement with the under side of the table top to rabbet that portion in which the cli is seated, and the rabbet will of necessity e of twice the depth of the thickness of theclip in order to permit the latter to bear squarely against the outer face of the keeper. In order to hold the bracket firmly assembled with the curtain 2, a spring locking latch 13 is provided, which 1s firmly secured, near one end, to the under side of the bracket, and is provided at its outer end witha toe or catch 14 that is adapted to spring over the lower edge of the curtain and bear against the inner side thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. To allow the hooked terminal of the cli to engage with the keeper, the under si e of the table top is provided with a recess 15 for this purpose. The leaf 4 carries near its outer edge, in this instance, a screw eye 16 that is adapted to engage the seat 6 and be held therein by means of the pin 8, as shown in Fig. 2.
In order to retain the up er surface of the supplemental leaf flush wit the upper face of the table top, a turn button 17 is employed. that is turned under the projecting edge of the table top, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4.
As shown in Fig. 1, but two of the brackets and one of the turn buttons are employed, but it is to be understood that this number may be increased if found necessary or de- 1T beneath the edge of the table top, the upper sirable without departing from the' spirit of the invention.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 a s uare table 18 is converted into a round table y employing four plano-convex leaves 19, which are held assembled with the table top in the same manner as that above de'- scribed.
In Fig. 7, a roundtable 2O is shown as being enlarged by combining therewith siX segmentalleaves 21 which are alsoA held in place by the same means employed in connection with the other two forms.
It will be seen from the foregoing descripltion that in order to adapt an ordinary table toreceive added leaves, 1t will only benecessary to provide the twol kee ers 12 and 'the recesses 15,. and as these a ditions are on the underside of the table top they will not `be in sight so-that the'. appearance of the table is nowisewdetracted from by the employment of thekeeper.
The bracket can be made as an article of manufactureand sold as such and :be applied .withA the keeper, `and a `selflocking device carried by said kbracket near the loWer edge of ksaid portion lto engage with the lower edge of the table curtain.
2. The combination withv a tablev top inf cluding a curtain or rim attached to the under sideof said top adjacent to its perimeter, of a detachable-bracket having a portiondisposed partfof-said portion -and theedge of said top cludinga curtain orrim attached tothe under side of said top adjacent to its perim-` eter, of a keeper mounted between vthe edge lof the table top and the curtain and provided with an orifice, a bracket having a clip near its upper edge provided with a hooked teri minal to engage the orifice of the keeper and provided adjacent to its outer end with a seat, a supplemental leaf carrying an eye to engage the seat, a pin to pass .through the bracket and the eye to hold the leaf and bracket assembled, and a spring-locking .member carried by the bracket at its inner end to engage with the lower edge of the curtain. v l
4. The combina-tion with a Vtable top including ka curtain or rim attached tothe runder side of said top adjacent to its perimeter, of a slotted` keeper secured to Ithe under side of the top and arranged between the edge of the tabletop and the curtain,` a bracket provided at one end with a hook to engage with the slot of the keeper andadjacent to itsother end with a seat, a supplemental leaf carrying an, eye to engage ythe seat, a-pin passing through the bracketand the eye to hold the leaf and bracket assembled, and a spring locking member carried by the bracket at its inner end to engage with rthe loweredge of the curtain. l
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my yown, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
