Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KOSTANTY OHRUSZOZYK, a resident of New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Tamping Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to machines for tamping railroad ties, and has for its object to rovide a cheap, simple and efficient mac ine for the purpose whereby one or more ties can be tamped automatically, as well as such a machine which can be applied to and operated on a car for moving along the tracks supcported by the ties to be tamped and can f e the material to be tamped.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more particularly set forth and described and specifically set forth in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention a pertains'to construct and use my improve machine for tamping railroad ties, Iwill describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a car showing my improved machine for tamping railroad ties applied thereto and with the ho per portion removed from one end of t e same. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same with one side thereof shown in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of the same on the line 3 3 Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of one of the tamps or fingers and with some of the connecting parts in section. Fig. 5 is a detail end view of the tamps or fingers and their connections. Fig. 6 1s a sectional detail view of the locking device for the tamps or fingers. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the tam s or fingers.
Like symbo s of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the draw in as illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents a car which is adapted to travel upon a track formed by the rails 2 through its wheels 3, and such rails are supported in the usual manner by the ties 4 under the same. The car 1 is of the usual gondola type with its bed 5 supported on and extending up from the platform 6 and frame 7 on said car and having within the same the hoppers 8. These hoppers 8 are shown as being four in number, a set of two at each end of the car 1, and each is provided with the inclined bottom portion 9. An inclined chute 10 connects the bottom of each of the hoppers 8 and extends down below the frame 7 of the car 1 to a position for the proper feeding of the materials from its hopper 8 to the particular one of the ties 4. to be tamped, as hereinafter described.
Connected to and between the frame 7 and between each of the two hoppers 8 at the ends of the car 1 forming a set is the tilting or rocking tamping device (1 having the rocking beam or shaft 11, which is formed of rectangular shape between said frame and of circular shape at its ends, so that it can be journaled on said frame by the bearings 12. Connected to the top of said shaft 11 is the frame 13 which is secured thereto through its sides 14 by the bolts 14., and to the ends 15 of said frame are connected the tamp bars or fingers 16. These fingers 16 are provided with the horizontal portions 17 and curved vertical portions 18 which terminate at their lower ends in the flared portions 18 having teeth 19 thereon, and such fingers are clamped against the said frame ends 15 by the horizontal portions 17 thereof fitting under the lower faces of said ends and within seats 17 in a plate 20. The plate 20 is secured to the frame ends 15 by the bolts 21, and the fingers 16 are held and adjusted. in the seats 17 in said plate by their portions 17, but if desired, set-screws 22 passing through the plate and engaging with the horizontal portions 17 of said fingers can be used for more firmly holding said fingers in place when once set in position.
In order to lock the frame 13 carrying the fingers 16 a rod 23 is pivoted at 24 to the frame 7 of the car 1 and this rod has a shoulder 25 at its free end for extending over the rock shaft 11, while the intermediate portion of said rod fits over one of the ends 15 of said frame and under a bar 26 secured to one of the sides 14 of said frame. A bar 27 is pivoted at 27' to said frame side 14. and has a lug 28 at its free end for fitting overand around the free end of the rod 23 for holding the same in place.
On each end of the rock shaft 11 is a crank arm 29 to which are connected the connecting rods 30 through pins 31, and a like rod 32 is connected to the pin 31 on one of said crank arms 29 and to one of the arms of a bell-crank-lever 33 pivoted at 34 on the car platform 6, so that an operating rod 35 can be connected to the other arm of said crank lever and to an engine 36 and boiler therefor 37, which are mounted on one end of the said platform and are adapted to tilt or rock the tamping devices a by the mechanism just described.
The operation of my improved machine for tamping railroad ties is as follows:The car 1 carrying the tamping devices a is run along the rails 2 to a position for tamping four of the ties 4 at one time, as shown in Fig. 2, and the material to be tamped under said ties is dropped down between said ties and their adjacent tie from the hoppers 8 and through the chutes 10 below the same, such material being either carried in said hoppers or can be fed thereto in any suitable manner,
v the material as. from dumps or piles alongside of said car, or from an adjacent car. After this is done and with the rod 23 and the bar 27 thrown back over the end 15 and side 14 respectively of the frame 13, the tamping devices a are then operated by starting the engine 36, which through the rods 30 and 32 connecting the arms 29 on the shafts 11 with the said engine through the crank lever 33 and rod 35 will act to rock said shafts and tilt said devices, and allow the ends 18 of the fingers 16 on said devices to tamp the material under the ties 4.
It will be obvious that during the operation of the tamping devices a the particular ones of the ties 4. being tamped by the fingers 16 on said devices will have the material packed under the same throughout their length I) 0 between and beyond the rails 2, and if desired material for being tamped under the ties can be thrown from the side of the car 1 and under said car to be mixed with dropped from the hoppers 8 in the said car and through the chutes 10, or can thus be inserted from the side of said car Without using said hoppers for containing and carrying said material, as desired.
When it is desired to move the car 1 and tamping devices a to another position the engine 36 can be stopped at a position which will permit the frames 13 carrying the fingers 16 to assume a horizontal position and when said car has reached the position desired, the engine can be started again to tilt the said frames and tamp the ties 4 as desired. In case it is desired, to lock the tamping devices a when not in operation or when it is desired to move the car along the tracks or rails 2 for any pur )OSG, the rods 23 can be thrown over the shafts 11 and under the bars 26, so that fingers on each side of the bars 27 can be thrown over the ends of said rods 23 to hold the same in place by the lugs 24 thereon and thereby lock said devices in their horizontal positions.
It will thus be seen that my improved machine for tamping railroad ties can be operated to automatically tamp the ties and in a rapid and easy manner, while both sides of the ties will be tamped in the movement of the car in one direction. It will also be seen that the material to be used for tamping can be fed automatically from the car or can be fed by hand or otherwise under the car, or to the devices without the same being carried by a car carrying the material.
The devices will tamp more material than can be carried on the car or fed thereto in the ordinary manner by reason of their rapid operation and the materials will be more thoroughly tamped manner. i
The devices are strong and durable and will not be liable to get out of order, while the tamping fingers on the devices can be adjusted for the various ties so as to permit of the roper tamping of the same, as well as be app ied to various forms of cars or other supporting means and set at the proper height for the work to be performed.
It will be obvious that the engine for operating the devices can be placed in positions other than on the car carrying the devices, as on the ground adjacent thereto, and that other means can be'em loyed for operating said devices, while it will also be obvious that any kind of car can be used to carry the tamping devices, and one or any number of such devices can be mounted thereon.
Various other modifications and changes in the design, construction and operation of my improved machine for tamping railroad ties may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A machine for tamping ties comprising a rocking means carrying a series of bars or the same for'tamping the ties.
2. A machine for tamping ties comprising a rocking shaft, and a series of bars or fingers operated from said shaft and the same for tamping the ties.
3. A machine for tamping ties comprising a rocking shaft, and a series of adjustable bars or fingers operated from said shaft and on each side of the same for tamping the ties.
4. A machine for tamping ties comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having a series ofbars or fingers mounted on each end of said frame for tamping the ties.
5. A machine for tamping ties comprising than in the ordinary.
on each side of a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having a series of adjustable bars or fingers mounted on each end of said frame for tamping the ties.
6. A machine for tamping ties comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for'tamping the ties, and means on said frame for holding and adjusting said bars.
7. A machine for tamping ties comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for tamping the'ties, and a plate connected to said frame and having seats therein for holding and adjusting said bars.
8. A machine for tamping ties comprising a rocking means carrying bars or fingers for tamping the ties, and means for locking said rocking means.
9. A machine for tamping ties, comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for tam ing the ties, and means for locking said shaft and frame.
10. The combination with a car, of a tamping device mounted on said car and comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for tamping the ties, and means on said car and frame for locking said shaft and frame.
11. The combination with a car, of a tamping device mounted on said car and comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for tamping the tles, and swinging means on said car and frame for locking said shaft and frame.
12. The combination with a car, a tamping device mounted on said car and comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for tamping the ties and a swinging rod mounted on said car for locking said shaft and frame.
13. The combinationvvith a car, of a tamping device mounted on said car and comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for tamping the ties, a swinging rod mounted on said car for extending over said frame to lock the same, and means for holding said rod in place.
14. The combination with a car, of a tamping device mounted on said car and comprising a rocking shaft, a frame connected to said shaft and having bars or fingers mounted thereon for tamping the ties, a swinging rod mounted on said car for extending over said frame, and a swinging bar for engaging with the free end of said rod to hold the same in place.
