T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED P. BEEDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rakes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to rakes and has for its principal object to provide a rake of very simple construction which may be made at small cost from stamped sheet metal, and in which the rake as a whole is formed of a single piece of metal.
A further object of the invention is to construct a stamped metal rake in which por tions of the sheet of metal are cut out and bent rearward to form braces for engagement with the handle.
A still further object of the invention is to iplrovide a novel means of attaching and rmly securing the handle in place.
IVith these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and articularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rake constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the metal blank from which the rake is formed. Fig. 4 is 'a front detail view of one of the teeth. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of one of the teeth.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out the invention, a strip of metal of proper width is run through the cutting dies and stamped out in such manner as to form a pair of arms 10, the body portion or head 11, and a plurality of teeth 12, and the width of the strip of metal is such that the opposite edges of the strip will form the outer edges of the arms 10, while the teeth of one rake are formed from the metal Patented June 30, 1908.

The teeth 12 are each bent transversely from end to end in order to increase their strength and rigidity, and the grooves which are formed in the rear of the teeth extend up into the body portion or head 11 of the rake. This body portion or head is slightly arched, being highest at the center of the rake, and is, furthermore, bent in order to form two webs 14 and 15, while a further bend is formed by turning down both of the arms 10 and the metal between them to form a flange 16 that is disposed in parallel relation with the web or flange 14, so that the head is approximately channel shaped in cross section, and this flange 16 has an opening 17 for the passage of the handle 18.
The two arms 10 are bent inward and rearward and their ends are turned in order to fit snugly against the sides of the handle and openings are formed through the end portions of these arms for the passage of a securing pin 20 that, also, extends through the handle.
The handle is slightly tapered and is forced through the opening 17 in the flange 16 until the end of the handle abuts against the face of the flange 1 1. The securing pin 20 is then passed through the openings in the arms and through a corresponding opening in the handle, and is riveted or otherwise firmly secured in place, so as to form a rigid connection between the handle and the rake head.
It will be observed that the handle is held from independent forward movement by contact with the flange 14, as well as by the in 20, while the pin prevents the pulling out of the handle, and said handle is braced laterally by the arms 10.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A stamped sheet metal rake, having its head bent to form reinforcing flanges and rearwardly extending handle engaging arms, formed integral with one of the flanges.
2. A stamped sheet metal rake having a rear flange provided with an opening for the reception of the end portion of the handle, the ends of the flange being bent to form handle engagin arms.
3. A stam ed sheet metal rake, the head of which is c ianneled in cross section, portions of the rear web of the head being bent to form handle engaging arms.
4. A stamped sheet metal rake,- the head of which is channeled in cross section, the rear flange of the head having a handle receiving opening and the end portions of said flange being bent rearward to form handle engaging arms.-
5. A rake formed of a single iece of stamped metal comprising a hea arched transversely of the rake, the head being bent to form two Webs at right angles to each other, integral teeth extending from the vertical web, a flange extending from the horizontal web and arranged in parallel relation with the vertical web, said flange having an opening for the reception of the inner end of the handle, and the opposite end portions of said flange being bent rearwardly to form handle engaglng and bracing arms.
6. In combination, a rake formed of a si11' gle sheet of stamped metal, the head of the rake being bent to form a horizontal flange and front and rear parallel flanges, teeth deending from the front flange, the rear flan e eing provided with an opening, a hand e extending through such opening and abutting against the front flange, the ends of the rear flange being bent to form a pair of handle bracing arms, and a connecting pin eX tending through said arms and the handle.
