Description

No. 890,963. PATENTED JUNE 16, 1908. H. E. GOPFIN.
RUNNING BOARD FOR AUTOMOBILES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 18. 1907.

HOWARD E. GOFFIN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
RUNNING-BOARD FOB AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 18, 1907. Serial No. 384,304.
Patented June 16, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD E. CoFFIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Running- Boards for Automo iles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to running boards for automobiles, and has particular reference to a construction of supporting hangers and a construction and arran ement of mud and dust shield as more fu y hereinafter described.
In the drawings-Figure 1.is a sectional perspective view; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line x-x, Fig. 1.
A is the side sill of the vehicle frame and B is the running board. This board is supported by hangers C, which are preferab struck up from a sheet metal blan and are constructed as follows: a is a flange portion for abutting against the side of the sill A, and havin apertures for the securing rivets or bolts c is a hanger arm, which is of substantially U -sha ed cross section, with the flanges thereo turned inward and downward. The arm 0 curves from the vertical to the horizontal and the. latter portion (1 supports the running board, which may be bolted or otherwise secured thereto. I
D is a mud and dust shield, which is arranged to guard the space between the sill and the running board, and prevents the throwing of mud or dust on to the latter from the wheels of the vehicle. This shield is curved to fit the inner and lower side of the hanger C, its upper edge bearing against the sill A, and its lower edge extending to a point adjacent to the inner edge of the runnlng board but upon the opposite side of the hanger. The shield is secured in position by attachment to the hanger, and to this end the latter is provided with ears d turned out- I ward therefrom and bolted or riveted to the shield.
When the parts are in position, the shield D will form an effective foot running board, and, at the same time, an 0 en space E is left between the inner edge 0 the board and the outer edge of the shield, which (permits water to run off from the shield an facilitates cleaning.
What I claim as my invention sg 1. The combination with a running board, a side sill of a vehicle frame and a shield; of a hanger for said running board consisting of a struck up sheet metal arm of U-shape section, said arm curving from a vertical to a horizontal plane, flanges on said vertical portion for engaging said side sill and out-turned flanges upon said horizontal portion for engaging said mud shield.
2. The combination with a running board anda side sill of a vehicle frame, of a hanger for said running board consisting of a struck up sheet metal arm of channel shape cross section, said arm curving from a vertlcal to a horizontal plane, tion for engaging said side sill, out-turned flanges upon said horizontal portion and a shield secured to the inner and lower side of said hanger by means of the flanges upon said horizontal portion, said shield extending from said sill to a point beneath said running board and being separated from the latter by the intervening hanger section.
3. The combination Witha running board and the side sill of a vehicle frame, of a supporting hanger and a shield secured to said anger extending from said sill to a point beneath the mner edge of said running board and being separated from the latter, for the purpose described.
4. The combination with a running board and the side sill of a vehicle. frame, of a supporting hanger extending beneath said run-' ning board, a shield secured to the inner and lower side of said hanger and extending from said sill to a point beneath said running board, being separated from the latter by the intervening hanger section.
5. The combination with a running board and side sill of a vehicle frame, of a hanger consisting of a struckiup sheet metal blank having a channel section with the side flanges thereof extending inward and downward,
HOWARD E. COFFIN.
