M 'invention relates 4to improvements in dredges and aims toprovide means for rap# 0 ldly excavatln or dred ing the material to come apparent from the accom anying draw' form-ing a part of this speci cation,
taken In connection with the description -given below, Oni the forward end of a scow or boat I 20 mount a rotatable turntable, also providing on thel boat suitable'motive power for turning-the table' and for actuating and adjustthe excavating mechanism. view of'the excavating portion of the dredge; Fig. 6 '1s a sidev elevation of the same; and Fig. 7 1s a front end elevation of the dredge side, its outer en bank.
M improved dredge includes a scow or flatottoni boat 1Q having at its'fore end a platform 11l braced and held in positionby one or more bracket or brace bars 12. Rotatable on this platform is a turntable 1 3 having on its under facea plurality of wheels or rol ers 14 .adapted to travel on a circular trackway on the platform. A pair of shaped reaching. over the adjacent plates or tracks 15 suitably s aced'apart and 7 eld together by a framewor i 16 are hingedy at 17 to the turntable so as to rotate therewith: This guiding trackway, its dumping Ortlon 18, the sharp edged excavating ucket 19, and its truck 20 adapt-ed to re- 7 -f ciprocate on the trackway, are substantiallyl like the corresponding parts set forth in detail inmy former patent No. 829,214, rendering ia.) further description thereof unnecessary ere. cally, turning about its hinges 1.7, by means of a cable 21 passing around ulleys 22 and' 23, .the former being connected) by a cable or cord 25 to a substantially upright support formed of two inclined bars 24 lsuitably mounted and braced lor stayed on v the boat and united at the top ends, whilethe other p ulley 23 is connected to the forward or Outerend of the trackway bv a similar cable 26. Cable 21 passes beneath'a guide ulley 27 .at or near the middle of the turntab e and then continues between two adjacent horizontal guide ulleys 28 to a `drum 29 on the boat, u on w ich it may be wound up and from wiich it may be paid out, as desired, thereby accomplishing the vertical adjustment of the trackway. 'The truck 2()A of the sharp-edged open-mouthed' excavating bucket or shovel 19 has attached to its front The trackway 15 is adjustable vertI- fe'ndportion' of the trackway ,over the'b'ank,

Cable 105 430 continues o'n down to a drum 34 on the boat. A retracting cable for the bucket and truck is attached-to the rear end of the latter and passes over a guidinvsheave 3G and between a pair of horizmital sheaves 37 110 o eration occurs whereupon the dumpin ,ischarged upon andthe excavated dirt 1s the bank.
On the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved dredge, the boatv or -sco'w being shown in longitudinal section;
" Fig. 2 is a plan view of the dred e;-Fig. 3 Isa lan view o f the boat and turna le on an enacalefFi 4 is a longitudinal section to a similar drum 38,upon whichit may be- Wound andfrornwhich it may be unwoun'd.
In order to rotate the turntable and the aty tached guiding `rack'vvay, I pass a cable 39 around' the 'circular turntableand Wind the remaining portion of-the same upon aV drum 40 such manner'that the rotation of the drum in one direction causes -the .winding up of one part of the cable anda pa ing out of the other, 'while'l a rotationof the rum in the ,o posite direction'causes a Vpaying' out of t at part of A`tl`1e, c ab`le which was formerly wound up and a yvinding'up of the other part of the cable, whereb'yby rotating or turning the drum 40 in one dirpction or the other, the turntable'and its attachediexcavating track- ,y way andshovel mayfbeswung laterally in `ter'being at thel rear end ofthe boa't.
1 respectively,l adapted to be Wound upon and unwoundfrom drums 4.8,'- 49, and 50, res ectively', suitable guidingfY sheaves orl u eys being provided for-.directing the ca les to their v drums. lOrdinarily these spuds or holding posts 'will 'sink into the ground suiliciently to lhold the boat in position, but it requires some power to lift them out of the ground or` mud, an'd. consequently l have rovided the cables and ldrums specifie dthe atter being Vmounted on-'a shaft 491 vTo op-4 erate'the various drums and cables',the boat is supplied with a steam boiler 5Ga supplying steam to an engine 51 connected to a llongitudinal rotary shaft 52. Shafts of thevarious drums are provided'with means for ,conneoting them either temporarily or permanently with the shaft 52, clutches being provided Where necessary. The details of this part of the mechanism are wellunderstood in the art and need no further description. i
.The operation of my improved dredge and .excavator isI substantially as follows: The boat or scow having been brought to the de# sired position, the spuds' are-loweredzto an clior the boat in place. Assuming that the truck and excavating shovel are near the rear end of the guiding track 15, the engine "is started in the'proper direction to .causea winding up of cable SO-on. drurne and a payi ingout of cable 85 from the adjacent drum 38.
Y and during this movement the shovel s or sh avesoir'. a layer of dirt from the be# in,
By this means the shovel and truck are caused to travel forwardly onthe guiding traikway,
and during a portion of the travel uo the u Y :l A outer lmcline of the trackway. After the a vertically-adiustable trac saidfboat .and shaped. in' pa bucket, substantially as desc,
seneca* Sheva has' 'rasata as 15rd; the amable, f traekway, and. shovel are swun vlaterally` so A as tobring the*fout-erl end r-of t e trackway over 4the adjacent'bank, as shown in Fig.' 7.j
This rotation of the turntable and trackway .is accomplishedv by throwing a clutch' into operation so as 'to cause rotation of drum 40 in theI proper direction.
Further travel of the truck andshovel on the inclined end pore tion of the trackway causes it to discharge its i' y load, as shown in Fig. 'Z and as fullysetforthind my former patent No. 829,214. Iii/de# sired, the swinging of the turntable andthe" travel of the shovel and its truck on theupf per inclined portion of 4tl1e` trackwayA may occur simultaneously. Thefturntable and soV trackway are then swung back to-'th'eir original position, and as the excavating or vdredging proceeds, the trackway and its frame are 4fed downwardly step by step by'the paying out of cable 21 from'drum 29 so that the layers of da.. When the excavating or dredging is done with the tr'ackway swung to 1 one side, as shown in Fig. 7, or it may be done'l with the trackway in some other positiondepending slope or' the incline of the end portion of the traekway; this latter beingin the viirst place madewith the inclination which it is intended the-bank of the Water-course or river shouldhave 'shovel is permitted 'to shave olf 'successive i upon they position of the boat, the, the adjacent bank is made equal'toy The middle portion of the guiding track,as, l
will be observed, is substantially horizontal when the trackWay is in its lowermost position-so as to give 'the bottom of theWater-- As--is well'understood by thosevskilled 'this art,t the mechanicalfeatures of my imf course a substantially flat and horizontal silrproved dredge may belrvaried and modifiedt-o a considerable extentwitho'ut sacrificing ,i
