To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMOND J. DOEBBEL- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claude, in the county of Armstrong and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Variable-Speed Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in variable speed adjusters for the governors of engines of the fly-ball type, and the invention has for its object a simple, durable, and efficient construction of mechanism for regulating the governor speed, the invention consisting in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form or embodiment of my improved variable speed adjuster for engine governors; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of the apparatus; Fig. 3 is a view illustrating a modification hereinafter specifically referred to, and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a spring bearing support employed.
Corresponding parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the support for the speed adjusting mechanism of my invention, said support in the present instance comprising the boiler of a traction engine, 2 the steam dome thereof, 3 the steam chest, 4 the vertically disposed governor shaft, and 5 the balls or weights suspended from arms secured to said shaft in the usual manner and designed to be swung outwardly by centrifugal action during the rotation of the shaft.
6 designates the engine shaft. The shaft 6 carries a wheel 7 which has a plane face against which the cone shaped s ool 8 is designed to contact with frictiona engagement. The friction spool 8 is splined on the revoluble rod 9, one end of said rod being mounted in a bearing 10 carried by or formed on the upper end of a leaf spring 11. This spring is secured to and projects from a supporting bracket 12 and exerts a tendency to press the spool into engagement with the face of the fly-wheel 7. The other end of the revoluble rod 9 is journaled in a boxing carried on the outer end of a bracket or standard 13 projecting upwardly from the steam chest and preferably supported thereon. This end of the rod carries a miter pinion 14 meshing with a similar pinion 15 on the governor shaft 4. Preferably the base rim of the spool 8 is grooved and a band 16 of rubber or the like is fitted in said groove so as to maintain the proper frictional contact with the face of the wheel 7. The spool 8 is formed at its smaller or taper end with a grooved collar 17 encircled or otherwise operatively engaged by the shifting yoke 18 pivotally mounted at its lower end on the bracket 19 and located in alinement with the leaf spring 11. A link rod 20 is connected at one end to the shifting yoke 18, and extends either forwardly or rearwardly therefrom according to the particular engine upon which my invention is installed. In the present instance, said link rod extends rearwardly and is connected at its rear end to the hand lever 21 arranged for adjustable locking engagement with the quadrant 22.
If desired or necessary to secure the desired result, the revoluble rod may, as indicated in Fig. 3 be formed in two sections 9 and 9 connected together by a gimbal or other universal joint 23, to secure the proper relative position as regards the governing shaft 4 and its driving pinion.
In the practical operation of my improved variable speed adjuster, it is manifest that moving or shifting the spool 8 towards the center of the wheel 7 will cause the engine to increase in speed whereas the movement of the s 001 towards the periphery of the said Wheel Will effect a consequent diminution in s eed.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a simple and efficient apparatus for adjusting the speed of governors of steam engines by the use of which speed may be regulated and maintained at the desired point, by the adjustment of the single hand lever 21 and the conse uent shifting of the friction spool 8.

may be mentioned that when used, for instance, in connection with traction engines the speed of the engine can be controlled at the will of the operator without the latter leaving the platform. The engine can be high and low speeds, the engine can be slowed down for turning corners or going over rough places Without fear of stopping on center and there will be no liability of it running away as there are no belts to break or slip off.
The speed of the governor may by the use of my invention be maintained constant with a full port, without the raising or lowering of the valve. It is, of course, to be understood that my invention is equally applicable to other portable engines and to stationary engines.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination of a shaft, a Wheel mounted on said shaft, a cone shaped friction spool provided in its base rim with a groove, a friction band mounted in said groove and bearing against one face of said wheel, the
tapered end of said spool being also formed with a grooved collar, a bracket 19, a shifting yoke pivotally mounted on said bracket and encircling the grooved collar, a link rod connected at one end to the yoke, a rod upon which said spool is s lined, the rod extending in line with said lin rod, a hand lever connected to the other end of said link rod, and supports for the rod on Which the spool is mounted, one of said supports consisting of a leaf spring provided with a bearing in which the said rod is journaled and exerting tension to press the spool into engagement with the wheel, said leaf spring being in alinement with the shifting yoke, and a bracket to which the lower end of said leaf spring is secured.
